CarmaRace board game seeks funding on Kickstarter

Carmarace box coverAutomotive geekery isn’t just limited to internet forums, dingy garages, or coffee shop parking lots. It extends far beyond that, actually. Board games – and we’re talking the complex ones with rulebooks longer than The Grapes Of Wrath, not Chutes and Ladders – are actually a fairly popular outlet for auto enthusiasts. Take the wildly addicting Formula D, for example.

The problem with board games is that they are often too long and complex to be played on a whim. CarmaRace aims to change that, by delivering a game that is both easy to learn and difficult to master, making it a bit like Risk. Unlike Risk, though, this game is all about getting from point A to point B as quickly as possible.

Players will need to hitchhike across the continent, be it on a plane, train, or by car. Each mode of transport has a card, while players can collect bonuses for future use, or obstacles to slow down an opponent. The strong social element can force players to make and break alliances at the drop of the hat, which is one of the things that’s so darn entertaining about these types of games.

Normally, we wouldn’t be quite so keen on a board game, but it comes from one of the producers for the online board game review show (yes, there is such a thing) Board to Death TV. That gives this game just a bit more credibility than one made by a big corporation. It’s sort of like what you’d get if you bought a car designed by the Autoblog team. Take a look at CarmaRace’s Kickstarter, which has 26 days to go and is already one-third of the way to its goal.

Contest seeks to redesign Tron light cycle

Tron: Legacy Light Cycle

We’ll be the first to admit that we went full geek over Tron: Legacy, and gaming website SideQuesting.com is showing its enthusiasm for the franchise by running a contest to reimagine the famous light cycle. Disney’s reworked battle bikes for Legacy were brilliant, but SQ wants to see exactly what designers cruising the web can come up with on their own. There’s a hitch, though: Artists are supposed to spend no longer than two hours on each submission.

Each design will be featured at SideQuesting.com, and winners will receive cool prizes including an Art of Tron: Legacy book, a white light cycle figurine and a deluxe light cycle figurine. SlideQuesting says that the total value of all the swag is around $75.

If you think you’ve got what it takes to work up the best design of them all, head over to SideQuesting.com for a look at the full rules and get started.

Chrysler seeks injunction to stop sale of ‘Imported from Detroit’ shirts

Imported From Detroit logo

Chrysler has asked a judge to enforce a preliminary injunction to prevent clothing store Pure Detroit from selling t-shirts bearing the slogan, “Imported from Detroit.” Chrysler asked for the injunction on the grounds that the public may be misled into thinking that the shirts came from Chrysler.

This round of legal squabbling is the latest in a series of trademark battles Chrysler has dealt with since it unveiled the slogan during the Super Bowl. Chrysler filed a lawsuit against Pure Detroit’s parent company Moda Group, LLC on March 15.

According to Chrysler, Pure Detroit agreed on Feb. 24 to stop selling the shirts via its website, but hasn’t stopped sending them to stores. Chrysler applied for two separate trademarks on the slogan, one for use on cars on November 23, and one for use on clothing on January 18. Pure Detroit says it plans to fight Chrysler’s injunction.

Geely-owned Volvo seeks €600 million EIB loan

Volvo received a €200 million loan from the European Investment Bank in March of this year, and sought another €300 million to cement its finances as it navigated the process of being sold by Ford. The rest of the funds were put on hold as Ford concluded the deal with China’s Geely, but now that the sale is complete Volvo is ready to take delivery of the additional sum.

Geely-owned Volvo has revised its product timeline compared to when when it first applied for EIB assistance, however. As a result, it now seeks €600 million. At the moment, the process is on hold while Geely discusses loan guarantees with the Swedish government, but perhaps that extra dosh – assuming it’s approved – will help pay for Volvo’s 7 Series and S-Class competitor.
