Hot Rod takes the 2011 Shelby GT350 out for a smoke break – Click above to watch video after the jump

Hot Rod was recently busy filming its Shelby Cobra versus Super Snake video, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some downtime. That break in the action… resulted in more action, because someone at Shelby handed the Hot Rod crew keys to a 2011 GT350.

Did they take a few casual runs up and down the road to get some basic footage? No, they lined up the car on a desert side street and attempted to ruin the rear rubber. On their way back to the original film shoot, they threw in a quick power slide for good measure. Drop the clutch and click past the jump to check out the clip.

Chicago 2011: Shelby adds new colors, convertible option to the GT350 for 2012

Filed under: Aftermarket, Chicago Auto Show, Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Ford

2012 Shelby GT350 Convertible

The 2011 Shelby GT350 followed nearly the same philosophy as the Ford Model T. You could get it in any color you want as long as it was white with blue stripes. That’s changing for 2012, as Shelby will also be offering the GT350 in Race Red and Kona Blue. A convertible option will be available, as well. In fact, this is the first time Shelby has built a drop-top GT350 since 1970.

The 2012 GT350 will offer up identical performance as the 2011 model, although one could argue that it didn’t need an upgrade in the first place. Customers can choose between the 430-horsepower base model or opt for either 525- or 624-horsepower versions. Additional upgrades include a full body kit, Cragar wheels, larger brakes, sport suspension and more. The convertible also comes with the option of a light bar. You can read full details about the 2012 Shelby GT350 after the jump, and check out our live photos from the show floor in the gallery below.

Shelby Cobra and Super Snake

Shelby Cobra vs. Super Snake – Click above to watch the video after the break

We submit to the record that the Shelby Cobra is the coolest American car ever to go into production. Whether or not you agree, there’s no denying the fact that the car that Carroll built is a legend in both street and racing circles, and it was the first car from waving the Stars and Stripes to truly upset the German and Italian motorsports hierarchy. Impressive credentials, then.

But is the Cobra the fastest car ever to wear the Shelby badge? Ah, now that’s an entirely different matter altogether, and one the boys from Hot Rod decided to put to the test. In one corner we have the incumbent 427 SC Cobra. Its challenger, bringing 750 supercharged horsepower to the ring, is none other than the 2011 Shelby GT500 Super Snake.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall… which is the baddest of them all? To find out, Hot Rod lined the two track-tuned beasts against each other for two separate tests: a road course and the drag strip. And the winner is? See for yourself in the video after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Jason!

2012 marks half a century since the very first Cobra was released on the street, and to celebrate, Shelby has announced a limited-edition 50th Anniversary model that was introduced at Barrett-Jackson earlier today. Using CSX8000 chassis numbers, each of the continuation cars will be painted in “Shelby Black” and feature a premium leather interior, wire wheels and special badging.

Pricing for a 50th Anniversary Cobra rolling chassis (car minus drivetrain) is set at $69,995 or $134,995 for an aluminum-bodied car. Expensive, yes, but with just 50 units slated for production, we can see them getting snapped up pretty quickly. Hit the jump for the full details from Shelby.

Shelby Cobra barn find up for auction in Fort Lauderdale

1963 Shelby Cobra CSX 2080 barn-find

Some collectors wait years for something like this to turn up: a pristine, original 1963 Shelby Cobra. Chassis number CSX 2080 has been sitting untouched since 1981, and has had only two owners in its history. And now it’s going up for auction.

The headline consignment for the Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale event held by the newly rechristened Auctions America by RM, this Cobra could very well be the find of the new year. Its body and interior are in remarkable condition for a car this age, and the original factory powertrain recently underwent a complete overhaul – kind of a necessity for a car that’s been sitting still for nearly thirty years.

Pre-sale estimates place it around $425,000 (give or take a quarter-k), joined by such early consignments as a ’32 Duesenberg, a 1969 Shelby GT500 Fastback and a 2005 Ford GT. The event takes place at the Broward County Convention Center on March 3-5, but you can scope out the details in the press release after the jump, along with the photos in the gallery below, right now.

eBay Find of the Day: 2008 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500KR (golf cart)

Filed under: Auctions, Etc., Ford, Electric

eBay Find of the Day: Shelby GT500KR golf cart – Click above for image gallery

Don’t worry folks… this one is fully licensed, so expect no unwanted lawsuits. What you see before you is said to be one example of three Shelby Mustang GT500KR golf carts produced, and this one happens to be Numero Uno. This particular electric transportation device is modeled after the 2008 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500KR, which is itself an homage to the 1968 original, and it can be yours if the price is right.

Of the three produced, this is the only one with a more powerful engine capable of pushing the golf cart to 60 miles per hour. According to the sell,er it was created for Amy Bolan, former president of Shelby Automobiles. The stitching on the driver’s seat reads “Mustang Amy” and the seller advises keeping it that way to preserve the “collector’s value.” However, they will stitch something else in that spot if desired.

The auction listing states that this GT500KR golf cart cost more than $50,000 to build. Currently there are 18 bids, with the top dollar offering sitting $9,900 and an unmet reserve. There’s not much time left on this auction, so interested golfers buyers are advised to bid soon.

Video: Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 dyno run goes boom in spectacular fashion

Shelby GT500 blows up on the dyno

BOOM goes the GT500’s dyno might – Click above to watch video after the jump

Strapping a car to a dyno and giving it the boot is not as safe as it might seem. Sure, the car is not actually going anywhere, but a lot of forces are at play in the drivelline. The owner of this particular Shelby Mustang GT500 in the video available after the jump, learned this firsthand when his prized pony when boom.

No postmortem discussion is available to find out what happened, and we’re not sure what (if any) modifications were done to this previous-gen GT500, but it certainly sounded pretty mean right until it barfed up a lung. Hop the jump to check out the unfortunate carnage. Thanks for the tip, Brent W!

Bill Cosby on Carroll Shelby and buying a Super Snake

Bill Cosby's Shelby Cobra Super Snake

Bill Cosby discusses his Shelby Super Snake – Click above to listen to audio after the jump

“Ladies and gentleman, I was idling… I was idling… the car had not moved, I had not put my foot on the gas pedal… and it was killing people…” – Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby and Carroll Shelby are friends. The builder of racecars once asked his comedian pal why he drove Ferraris and insisted that he switch to American built sports cars. Cosby took Shelby up on this offer and was soon the proud owner of a Shelby Cobra Super Snake. It’s claimed that the output on the Super Snake was 462 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque, which is probably a bit more than the lightweight racer actually needs.

Bill Cosby apparently agreed with this notion, as he turned the story of the Cobra into a skit named “200 MPH.” His description of the Super Snake’s delivery is hilarious. During an appearance on The Tonight Show in more recent years, Jay Leno prodded the Cos to tell the Cobra story for the audience as well. What ensued was an impromptu version of “200 MPH” that might actually be even funnier than the original routine. You can judge for yourself. Both are posted after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Luke!

Shelby releases final specs on GT350 Mustang, power output ranges from fast to furious

Filed under: Aftermarket, Coupe, Performance, Ford

2011 Shelby GT350

2011 Shelby GT350 – Click above for high-res image gallery

Shelby American has finally released the specs on its 2011 Shelby GT350. Starting with a 2011 Ford Mustang GT, Shelby utilizes Ford’s 5.0-liter V8 engine but ups the ante a bit. The base GT350 is rated at 430 horsepower (the stock GT musters 412 hp). On the standard GT350, a Whipple supercharger can be added to boost power output to 525 hp – enough to propel the modified Mustang from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds. If that’s not enough, the R tune version produces a monstrous 624 horses.

All 2011 Shelby GT350s are fitted with a long list of performance-aiding parts which include upgrades to the brakes, suspension and tires. As you can see above, they also wear unique Shelby aero and trim bits, a GT350 45th anniversary badge and a serialized Shelby GT350 dash plate.

Pricing for the naturally-aspirated Shelby GT350 conversion is set at $26,995 and the base supercharged car runs $33,995. Due to the 99-pony jump with the R tune, you would expect that package to cost close to $40,000, but it doesn’t. It’s just 750 bucks over the price of the standard supercharged kit. All of these prices, however, fail to include the cost of the donor Mustang GT. A full parts list and more performance stats are available in the press release after the jump.

Shelby announces 2011 GT500 Super Snake with up to 800 horsepower

Filed under: Aftermarket, Coupe, Performance, Ford

2011 Shelby GT500 Super Snake – Click above for high-res image gallery

When we tested the 750 horsepower 2010 Shelby GT500 Super Snake, our man Jonathon Ramsey declared it the “new king” of Mustangs. Surprisingly, he found that the suspension was able to – barely – keep up with the engine, but we figured that the Super Snake had just about all the power a street-driven Mustang could handle. We thought wrong, at least according to Shelby.

Ol’ Carroll has upped the ante in the horsepower wars once again by offering up to 800 horsepower in the newly-released 2011 version of the Super Snake. Of course, there are more sane options including 660 horsepower and 750 horsepower variants, but the 800 horsepower version will undoubtedly be the must-have for the guy (or girl) who needs the biggest and baddest ‘Stang on the block. Also new for 2011 are the optional anthracite wheels, white stripes and new side scoops. The Super Snake package starts at $30,245 (just $250 less than the cost of a brand new 2011 Mustang GT) and can be built at Shelby’s Las Vegas facility or at any of their official Mod Shops around the country. Hit the jump for complete specs for the 2011 Super Snake package and more details.
