Audi is apparently done teasing us with rendering after rendering of its new Q3 crossover. Instead, the German automaker has gone ahead and let the cat completely out of the bag ahead of the cute ‘ute’s official unveiling at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show.

As you’re likely already aware, the Q3 is Audi’s take on how to make a Volkswagen Tiguan into an entry-level luxury model. Naturally, that means entirely new sheetmetal with Audi’s well-known gaping grille along with LED lighting all around and a steeply sloping rear hatch. Add it all up and Audi says you get an impressively low drag coefficient of just 0.32.

That shapely rear hatch means there are a few concessions inside. There’s 16.24 cubic feet of storage capacity with the rear seats in place, and 48.2 with them folded down. The Tiguan, by way of comparison, offers 18.6 and 56.1, respectively, and even that is about 25 percent smaller than a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. Judging by the shape of the hind quarters, large and bulky items may be a bit tough to fit inside as well.

You won’t be asked to skimp on options, though. Adaptive light technology that points the way forward, electronic parking assistance and Audi’s hard drive-based MMI infotainment and navigation system will all be available at launch, and an option to turn the Q3 into a wireless hotspot will come in the near future.

Two gasoline and one diesel engine, all with direct injection, will be offered at launch, offering between 140 and 211 horsepower. The two most powerful engines will be mated to Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system via a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. A 170-horsepower gasoline engine will also be offered with front-wheel drive. We’ll have to play a game of wait-and-see to find out which of these powertrains make their way Stateside.

Base price in Germany for the 2012 Audi Q3 will be 29,900 euros when it goes on sale in June. For those keeping track, that’s about $43,000 at the current exchange rate, though we wouldn’t go by that figure when estimating its cost when it eventually hits the U.S. Want to know more? Find all the details in the exhaustive press blast after the break.

Opinion: If distracted driving is such an epidemic, why don’t statistics show it?

Declining Highway Death Rate Challenges Distracted Driving Fears

Distracted driving

The distracted driving debate is being marred by an overdose of hype and hysteria.

My weekend nearly got off to a disastrous start when a driver, busy texting, suddenly realized he was going to miss his exit. At the last possible moment, he slammed his brakes and surged across four lanes of traffic, avoiding the need to go a few miles out of the way – but nearly touching off a multi-car accident in the process.

We’ve all seen the texters, the women putting on makeup, the guys checking their sports scores. Heck, a woman in Florida recently crashed while giving herself a bikini shave. But are we experiencing, as Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood puts it, “a deadly epidemic” of distracted driving – one that can only be addressed by the most draconian of new laws?

There’s no question that there are some things you just shouldn’t be doing behind the wheel, and few would argue against the laws that many states have passed prohibiting motorists from texting while driving. But what other steps are needed? The latest federal data on highway fatalities suggests we’ve probably gone far enough – and that the distracted driving debate is being marred by an overdose of hype and hysteria.

BMW M5 concept

Images and details of the BMW M5 Concept have been soaking up the Internet’s bandwidth for the past few days now, but the fierce four-door hasn’t even motored onto its plinth at the Shanghai Motor Show yet.

Given its production-ready appearance and the Bavarians’ propensity for such things, there appears to be precious little about the Shanghai show car that’s actually conceptual, but even so, we haven’t had a clear bead on where the salable F10-based BMW super saloon will show up – until now.

Autoblog has learned that the 580+horsepower production M5 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September, and by the time it makes the scene, BMW’s elves will no doubt have fitted a full interior and spec sheet.

Report: 2012 Nissan Versa to debut at New York Auto Show

Nissan versa sketch

2012 Nissan Versa Sketch – Click above for high-res image

Nissan has hinted in the past that it plans to show a new small car at this year’s New York Auto Show, and the folks at Inside Line now say that new vehicle will be the 2012 Versa. The next Versa will reportedly be based off of a new global B platform that already underpins the Nissan Sunny (pictured, right) and the Micra. The updated Versa will reportedly shrink a bit compared to the current model, and it will continue to slot below the Sentra in terms of price.

The Japanese automaker released a sketch of the next-generation model back in October, giving us an idea of what the Versa will look like. We’re hoping the new Versa will once again be available in both sedan and hatchback variants, and it wouldn’t hurt for fuel economy numbers to offer powertrain enhancements compared to the model that’s currently on sale. Stay tuned.

Suzuki bringing two Kizashi concepts to New York Auto Show

Suzuki is hoping to jumpstart its slow-selling Kizashi with two concepts that will debut at the New York International Auto Show. Suzuki says that the cars will each feature a different “advanced propulsion system,” though they aren’t dropping many hints as to what that may mean.

Whatever it is, Suzuki’s New York show display will be advanced propulsion-themed, and all will become clear soon enough.

There aren’t any photos of the cars available yet, but Suzuki says one will be a “socially-conscious sedan,” while the other will be a rowdy tribute to Suzuki’s motorcycling heritage. We haven’t quite figured out what that means, either. Whatever the cars wind up looking like, Suzuki says it will debut them during its press conference at the show.

Video: Driver of shocking road debris accident interviewed by NBC’s Today Show

Motorist Wendy Cobb on NBC's Today Show

Wendy Cobb NBC Today Show interview – Click above to watch video after the jump

The driver who very nearly filmed her own death has been interviewed by NBC’s Today Show after video of her shocking road debris accident went viral. Wendy Cobb of Shelby, North Carolina was driving on April 1 when the accident happened.

Cobb says she was using her cameraphone to film two trucks who were holding up traffic so she could report the incident. As Cobb turned her phone toward the road in front of her, the truck and trailer in front of her kicked up a 2×4 lying in the road that shattered the windshield of her Kia Sedona minivan and very nearly impaled her. Luckily, Ms. Cobb’s children weren’t with her when the accident happened, or the results may have been far more tragic. According Cobb, the only injury she received was a tiny glass cut. Damage to her car was limited to the hood and windshield.

Cobb says she hasn’t watched the video since the day of the accident, but has received plenty of emails from people who still think it was an April Fool’s prank – check out the video after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Adam!

The 2011 JEC Composite Show is currently taking place in Paris, and if we were there, our eyes would be treated to the naked beauty that is the Lamborghini Aventador’s rolling chassis.

Lamborghini’s Aventador LP700-4’s chassis is a perfect fit for the JEC show, as it’s constructed with a reinforced carbon fiber composite. The composite material was developed by Lamborghini, working in conjunction with engineers at Boeing. Composite materials are also used in the construction of the wheels, frame, seats and a handful of other Aventador parts. Follow the jump for the full press release.

2012 Kia Rio sedan confirmed for New York Auto Show

2012 Kia Rio

2012 Kia Rio – Click above for high-res image gallery

Our man Jeremy Korzeniewski is attending a Kia event in Phoenix, Arizona this week, and during a press briefing this morning, JK learned that the Korean automaker will be unveiling its 2012 Rio sedan at the 2011 New York Auto Show. The four-door Rio will complement the hatchback bodystyle that bowed at the Geneva Motor Show in early March.

Four powertrains will be available on the Rio overseas – two gas and two diesel – and while mum’s the word on which engine(s) will be available here in the United States, we’re putting our money on the 1.4-liter gasoline four. This mill produces 108 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque, mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed(!) automatic transmission.

In other news, Kia also let slip that the KV7 concept from this year’s Detroit Auto Show previews what’s in store for the next-generation Sedona minivan. We hinted at this after a conversation with Michael Sprague, Kia’s vice president of marketing, though it’s still unclear exactly what elements from the KV7 will be incorporated into the next-gen Sedona. The concept focused on a more traditional conversion van setup rather than the family-centric Sedona that currently graces our streets.

Rumormill: Light BMW M Concept coming to Tokyo Motor Show

Filed under: Performance, Etc., Japan, Technology, Tokyo Motor Show, BMW, Luxury

BMW M Concept Sketch

The forums are alight with word that BMW will be bringing something unique to this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. According to the BMW-obsessed crowd over at M3Post.com, the Roundel is looking to flex its muscles when it comes to lightweight engineering with an M concept that boasts the best the company has to offer. Supposedly, the chassis will use a plethora of exotic materials to shave off every last pound, including magnesium, titanium, thermoplastic and carbon fiber. Unfortunately, it sounds like the concept will be a one-off piece and not something that’s destined for production. A real shame since we could really go for a 1 Series CSL.

That doesn’t mean BMW won’t use the technology in the concept in its production vehicles, though. The German manufacturer has made it clear that carbon-fiber reinforced plastic is going to be a big part of its vehicles moving forward, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the material joined by other lightweight components as shedding pounds becomes increasingly important to meeting fuel economy and performance goals.

Lexus confirms LF-Gh concept for New York Auto Show

Next-generation Lexus GS spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

A couple weeks back, we told you that Toyota had big plans for the New York Auto Show. We heard that one of the vehicles scheduled to make an appearance was the totally redesigned Lexus GS, but what we’re going to get instead is the LF-Gh hybrid concept. Lexus tells us that the concept “will present a glimpse into the future of Lexus design.”

We’re all for a concept car that reveals future styling direction, but we were really hoping to see a production a replacement for the aging sport sedan. Thankfully, our sources tell us that the LF-Gh and the next-generation GS should be one and the same, though we’re certain the concept car will feature styling cues (read: massive wheels, ridiculous interior, etc.) that won’t make it anywhere near production.

Lexus will officially unveil the LF-Gh on the evening of April 19, and you can expect a full report right here on Autoblog within minutes of the unveiling.
