Lexus LF-Gh conceptAs promised, Lexus is preparing to land at the New York Auto Show with a conceptual preview for the next-generation GS sedan. That model has essentially been an evolution of the Giugiaro design that debuted on the original GS way back in 1991, but the new concept promises to show the way forward; not just for the mid-range Lexus sedan, but for the entire brand.

The Toyota luxury division has confirmed the debut of the LF-Gh – shorthand for Lexus Future Grand-Touring Hybrid (of course) – with the release of these two teaser shots and the press statement we’ve posted after the jump. Lexus says the car will spearhead the next step in its L-Finesse design language that’s been in play for a decade now.

From what we can tell from the crop-shots, the LF-Gh looks to blend some of the aggression we’ve seen on Audi concepts of late with some thoroughly Japanese-looking design flourishes, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to see the big picture. In any case, click past the break to read the short statement and be sure to check out high-res versions of the two teasers in our gallery below.

Global Rally Cross

ESPN Global Rally Cross – Click above to watch video after the jump

Taking a break from its endless stream of SportsCenter, followed by SportsCenter, followed by NFL Draft analysis, followed by SportsCenter, ESPN will be running the Global Rally Championship this Spring and Summer.

The Global Rally Championship will be a series of sprint-style races like the ones featured at last year’s Summer X-Games, only spread out over an entire season, and utilizing tracks other than the L.A. Coliseum.

The courses will combine dirt, gravel and pavement stages to keep everything as unpredictable as possible. The cars will be the same mix of Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Mitsubishi Lancer and Ford Fiesta compacts that ran at X-Games, which means they sport ludicrous power figures and should hit 60 in just over two seconds. That said, we can’t help but doubt the claims of street legality made by ESPN’s announcer in the ad after the jump. Check it out, then head over to the Global Rallycross website for more info.

2012 BMW M5 teaser – Click above to watch the video

The F10 BMW M5 is nigh upon us, and to make sure we’re excited, BMW has released a tantalizingly short and non-descript video of the M car in action. As with most BMW M teaser videos, there’s not much to see, other than some headlights at high-speed, so the vocals are probably the most important thing.

While we’ve seen plenty of spy shots of the next big M car, this is the first official video BMW has produced. By the look and sound of things, the car’s 578-hp twin-turbo V8 might just be worth the hype. Hit the jump for the video.

Volkswagen Super Bowl ad – Click above to watch video after the jump

It looks like Super Bowl fans will be enjoying a pair of Volkswagen ads between plays this year. The German automaker is returning to the greatest spectacle in the NFL for the first time in nine years with two 30-second spots designed to get people excited about both the next-generation Beetle and Passat.

We’ve had the good fortune of seeing both ads, and they’re equally entertaining. Unfortunately, the full pieces are being kept under lock and key until later this week, when we’ll be sure to share them with the world.

Until then, Volkswagen has decided to show off a teaser clip for the Beetle spot featuring a road-hugging black beetle. We dig his white racing stripes.

Don’t like bugs? No worries. The spot for the Passat centers on a Star Wars parody. Stay tuned for the full clips and be sure to hit the jump for a look at the teaser as well as the press release.

Porsche’s show car en route to Cobo Hall – Click above to watch after the jump

Automakers typically try to keep prying eyes away from the show cars that they wheel into convention centers for major auto shows. Porsche, however, made a video of the process and posted it online.

With only hours to go until the German automaker marks its return to the Detroit Auto Show after a four-year absence, speculation has been running wild as to what Porsche has in store for us. Earlier reports pointed towards a racing car based on the 918 Spyder concept from Geneva, then Stuttgart announced it was bringing a concept car.

From watching the video after the jump, it seems both could be right. The camouflaged shell seems to blend elements of the 918 with the tail of the all-conquering 956, and has the precise effect of revving up our anticipation even more. Whatever it is, we’ll be finding out very shortly, 6:30AM EST to be exact. But in the meantime, we invite you to check out the footage after the jump.

Kia teases KV7 concept once more before Detroit debut

Kia KV7 Concept

Kia KV7 concept teaser – Click above to expand

A few weeks ago, Kia released a teaser sketch of its new KV7 concept that will debut next week at the Detroit Auto Show. The initial sketch showed us that the Korean automaker is working on what appears to be a tall hatchback or small crossover, with the most interesting design feature being a set of gullwing doors for rear seat passengers.

Now, Kia has released this close-up shot of what appears to be the KV7’s front three-quarter view, showing off the rather unique headlamp units and full LED bar below the front bumper. Kia explains:

“Conceived as a challenge to the industry’s current interpretation of the van, the KV7 incorporates several innovative lighting elements currently being evaluated for future Kia production vehicles.”

Not only are we eager to see what the concept looks like in the flesh, but we’re curious as to just how big the KV7 is. As Kia states, this is an “interpretation of the van,” so we’re thinking this could be some sort of futuristic minivan concept, or perhaps something similar in size to Ford’s new 2012 C-Max. Either way, we’ll have the full details live from Cobo Hall next week, so stay tuned. Kia’s (short) official statement is available after the jump.

Ford teases Focus electric ahead of CES

2012 Ford Focus Electric

It’s been nearly a full year since Ford made it clear that the automaker is planning to roll out an all-electric version of its Focus, and now we have our first glimpse at what to expect from the car. The Blue Oval has dusted off its first teaser of the New Year with a shot of the charging port on the EV Focus. Interestingly enough, Ford has decided to skip the Detroit Auto Show as a venue for the vehicle’s unveil, opting instead for the electrified Focus to take a bow at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which runs from January 6 to 9.

Ford has previously announced that when the Focus Electric hits the market, it will initially only be available in Washington, D.C. and just 14 states. Buyers can expect to find a range of around 100 miles thanks to an array of lithium-polymer batteries supplied by LG Chem. The attentive of you will recognize that supplier as the same company that serves up the cells for the Chevrolet Volt.

We’ll have the full details about Ford’s Focus Electric in the coming days, so stay tuned.

Donkervoort teases new D8 GTO in Christmas card

Filed under: Concept Cars, Convertible, Performance, Europe, Specialty

Donkervort D8 GTO Teaser

Donkervoort showed off a bit of a holiday surprise in the form of a company Christmas card that gave the world a hint as to what the automaker has planned for the new year. Behold: the first look at the D8 GTO. Using a carbon fiber and steel composite chassis, the company’s next take on open-wheeled goodness is expected to be a good bit larger than the current iteration. While Donkervort hasn’t made any clear distinctions as to what exactly will show up under the hood, early reports suggest the beast could possibly rock the same 2.5-liter turbo five-cylinder mill from the mighty Audi TT-RS. If true, that means that the G8 GTO could pack upwards of 340 horsepower.

According to AutoWeek.nl and our Google translator, Donkervoort plans to show off a prototype early in 2011. If we were the betting type, we’d lay a fiver on the car showing up at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Zagato teases upcoming TZ4 with holiday greetings?

Filed under: Concept Cars, Classics, Alfa Romeo, Design/Style

Zagato holiday card

Close your eyes and picture the most beautiful contemporary sportscar designs. Were the Perana Z-One and Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione in the mix? Well, perhaps they ought to be. Now open your eyes and look at the image above.

What you’re looking at is a holiday card from the good folks at Zagato featuring the full Alfa Romeo TZ family. Starting from the back, there’s the original TZ1, followed by the classic TZ2, the most recent TZ3 Corsa unveiled at Villa d’Este and, what’s that wrapped in a bow, a fourth TZ model?

This is the first indication we’ve had of such a model in the works, but from what we can see in the image above, it looks promising, blending the aforementioned Z-One and 8C together into one tempting shape. Logic would dictate that the fourth model will carry the TZ4 nameplate. If it’s real, it’s likely to have been commissioned by some wealthy client, and probably borrows its underpinnings from the 8C Competizione. Whatever it is, color us intrigued, so watch this space for more details as they become available.
