GQ in Tim Allen's Garage

Jay Leno might be the celebrity that’s known for an impressive car collection, but there’s no shortage of big names stars that enjoy picking up new rides. Tim Allen, star of Home Improvement, Toy Story, and Galaxy Quest is one of those celebs. Being a Detroiter, Allen’s collection of muscle cars shouldn’t be a huge surprise. However, it’s the generally eclectic feel of his collection that makes it interesting.

GQ took a video camera inside Allen’s Los Angeles garage, where he keeps a spate of muscle cars, along with some truly rare finds and a few one-off deals. The video includes an interesting anecdote about his Ford RS200, along with closer looks at a Shelby Cobra 289, a 1950 Cadillac, and the same 1933 Ford that was rebuilt on-air during Home Improvement‘s run.

We’ve got the full video below, so be sure to swing down and check it out.

Autoblog talks to Saab NA President and COO Tim Colbeck after his first day

Tim Colbeck, Saab

“I’m a horrible manager,” admits Muller, “but I’m very good at raising money.”

While in Washington D.C. for the 2012 Saab 9-4X launch, we had dinner next to Victor Muller, then spoke to the newly announced captain of Saab’s North American ship, Tim Colbeck, who actually fills the dual roles of president and COO – at the end of his first day on the job. Muller started the evening by talking about the most recent troubles, saying of the production stoppage, “It was all my fault.”

“Saab was really a General Motors subsidiary – GM financing, GM terms and conditions, GM suppliers, and things can start to come apart when you’re independent. Sometimes you have to tell suppliers it’s not going to be the way it was.”

Muller says a single supplier told Saab that “if we didn’t pay, he wasn’t going to open his truck that day,” and Muller “called his bluff.” The supplier was a man of his word, wouldn’t deliver the parts, and the lack of those particular components caused a production stoppage of two hours, which Muller says is “normal elsewhere, but not in Sweden.”

To hear Muller tell it, it might not have been such a problem if the Swedish media, which he accuses of being Saab bashers, hadn’t turned it into a sensational story. “Within two hours of the stoppage,” he said, “we didn’t have one supplier with problems, we had 92 suppliers with problems” as Saab experienced a “run on the bank.” Continue reading…

Actor and comedian Tim Allen, the former Home Improvement star and the man behind Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear, has seen steady voiceover work of late as the pitchman for Chevrolet (and Campbell’s Soup, and Michigan tourism). Now, all the recent activity has gotten Allen plenty of attention of late, but he’s an old hand when it comes to this stuff.

If you turn the clock back to 1988 you can watch Allen, sporting glasses and a rail-thin physique, try to sell us on the Merkur Scorpio (then dubbed Road and Track’s best sedan under $27,500). German engineering at your Lincoln/Mercury dealer… what could possibly go wrong? Hit the jump to watch the 60-second spot. Just remember that operators are no longer standing by.
