Chevrolet is taking to the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale stage to auction off a special drop-top. The first of 50 limited-edition cars, this 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Indy 500 Pace Car will cross the stage before heading to lead the field at the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.

The orange and white color combination matches that of the Indy-fied 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, which has since become a collectors item of its own. As far as we know, the Camaro ‘Vert will be a 2012 model, but everything here at Barrett-Jackson is listing this as a 2011.

Proceeds from the sale of this limited-edition Camaro will go the David Foster Foundation, which supports families with children in need of live-saving organ transplants. Charity cars have gone through the roof at the 2011 Barrett-Jackson auction and we would expect nothing different from this one.

The Camaro Convertible doesn’t have an official listing page, as it was something of a surprise for bidders, but you can watch Speed’s live online coverage here. Are you playing Speed’s Online Fantasy Bid Game? If not, test your auction pricing mettle by guessing what a series of featured vehicles will end up bringing at the auction block – you could end up winning a prize, like an Apple iPad. Enjoy!

*Update: The final gavel price? $225,000. Click past the jump to watch this Camaro cross the auction block.

Every fancied owing your own Top Fuel Dragster? Are you also a fan of beer brewed from the waters of Golden, Colorado? Barrett-Jackson has the car for you. It may only be a replica but this 1990 Coors Extra Gold Top Fuel Dragster has plenty of V8 oomph sitting right behind your head.

Auctioned off on multiple occasions, the goal of the dragster is to produce $1 million for the Darryl Gwynn Foundation. To date the car has raised $810,000 and hopefully the final hammer at the 2011 Barrett-Jackson stage will get it much closer to its goal.

Report: Top Think NA exec steps down

Filed under: Etc., Europe, Hatchback, Electric

Richard CannyAccording to Automotive News, Think North America Vice Chairman Richard Canny has left the company. Canny has officially resigned his post with the electric vehicle maker and will part ways with his former employer at the end of this month to pursue “a new adventure and challenge.” Beyond that cryptic explanation, there’s little indicating why the former Ford executive would leave the company after helping to salvage the automaker from near ruin. Canny helped Think start European production in Finland, re-ignited European sales, and led the EV-maker to purchase and refurbish a plant in Elkhart, Indiana among other feats.

While speaking with Automotive News, Canny said that he has a range of other opportunities open to him, but for now, he plans on taking some time to be with family in Australia. He has previously served as the worldwide director of strategic planning for Ford, president of Ford South America, president of Ford Argentina and the managing director of Ford Malaysia.

2011 Detroit Auto Show: Editors’ Choice for Top Five Vehicles

It’s never easy to reach a unanimous decision when it comes time for our group of auto-obsessive bloggers to choose any sort of list that involves automobiles. In the case of the Top Five Introductions from the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, the process was especially difficult.

Somewhat surprisingly, most everyone agreed rather quickly on positions one and two, but from there, the waters were much murkier. In the end, though, we made our arguments for and against, considered each others’ viewpoints and, after much weeping and gnashing of teeth, had ourselves a workable list.

Follow the jump to see the fruits of our labor.

Yesterday was by far one of the busiest auto show days we’ve experienced. Press conferences started at a sleep-depriving 6:30 a.m. and lasted all the way until nearly 8:00 that evening. Needless to say, there was no time to stop and enjoy the cars.

Today was a little different. With no major press conferences we’ve had the opportunity to walk around the show floor and thoroughly inspect the new debuts. We also got the chance to get better photographs of some of our favorite vehicles of the show, and this year cars like the Porsche 918 RSR, BMW 1 Series M Coupe and Hyundai Veloster were the real stars. You can see our best images from the show below, each uploaded in 1920×1275 for those with extra large computer monitors.

Top ten most and least expensive cars to insure in 2011

Filed under: Etc., Aston Martin, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota

2011 Chrysler Town and Country minivan

With the calendar year changing from 2010 to 2011, insurance adjusters have recompiled their actuarial tables and that means a new list of the cheapest and most expensive vehicles to insure for the new year. In this case, Insure.com recently conducted a survey of the nations six top insurance carriers and complied a list of 40 vehicles that take top honors in each category.

The study goes past the specific model and narrows down vehicles by trim. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the least expensive vehicles are dominated by minivans, while the most expensive list is filled with high-powered German machines. We cut down the list of 40 to show you the top 10 from each side of the fence and included the average annual premium for each vehicle after the jump.

2012 Chevy Camaro Convertible configurator pops its top

Filed under: Car Buying, Convertible, Performance, Chevrolet, GM

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible configurator
The time has come to virtually create your own modern-retro (an oxymoron? Not these days…) muscle car convertible. That’s right, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro convertible configurator is now online. The base price for a standard-grade 1LT model with a V6 comes in at $29,150. Stepping up to the top-level SS model will empty the wallet to the tune of $39,650… but if you’re like us you will end up closer to $50,000.

To get there, we threw on the RS package and blacked-out 21-inch wheels along with the dealer-installed ground effects package. However, once we looked to the cost summary and saw $49,635 we began to backtrack a wee bit on the options. We ended up at $47,920 for a tasty new Camaro Convertible painted up in classic white with orange racing stripes.

Head on over to the Chevrolet Camaro convertible configurator and see what your ideal setup will cost you. Thanks for the drop-top tip, Ryan!

It’s the end of the 2010, and here at Autoblog, that means we’ve frittered away another 365 days driving great cars and going to the world’s best automotive events. While we certainly enjoy getting to do those things, what makes it worth it is being able to share it with you, our readers. We do our best to tell the stories, but as often as not, it’s the accompanying photographs that really allow us to share what we’re up to. Besides, we love seeing beautiful, high-res images of cars as much as the next guy, and we enjoy them all that much more when we’re the ones behind the lens.

As has become something of an end-of-December tradition here at Autoblog, we’ve gone through our hard drives in search of the best photos we’ve taken in the past year. We’ve selected the our favorite 100, which you can see assembled in the massive high-res gallery below. We hope you enjoy the images as much as we did reminiscing and putting them together. And if you want to get really nostalgic, you can view our favorite photos from 2009 as well as 2008. Enjoy!
