Report: Why U-Haul won’t rent you a trailer for your Ford Explorer

If you are a Ford Explorer owner who may need to infrequently tow small loads, here’s a Public Service Announcement that may be of interest. Apparently, U-Haul, which we’d guess is the first name that pops in people’s minds when the subject of a rental trailer comes up, will not loan trailers out if the lender plans on hooking it up to a Ford Explorer, regardless of the vehicle’s tow rating.

According to a spokesperson for U-Haul that spoke to Consumer Reports, it’s company policy to deny trailer rentals to Explorer owners. Why? Lawyers. Says Joanne Fried, director of media and corporate relations, “Every time we go to hire an attorney to defend a lawsuit, as soon as we say ‘Ford Explorer,’ they charge us more money.”

The issue can be traced all the way back to the Firestone tire debacle that tarnished the Explorer’s good name in the late 1990s. Though the original lawsuit has long since been settled and, more importantly, the current Explorer shares absolutely nothing but its moniker with the old truck-based model cited in the lawsuit, the name ‘Explorer’ is still enough to incite bouts of panic, sleepless nights and a bucket full of dollar signs to U-Haul’s legal team.

The corporate edict also applies to the Jeep Wrangler, unless the owner agrees only to tow the U-Haul trailer only when a hardtop is in place on the iconic off-roader. Seems more than a little arbitrary and ignorant to us, but we’re not the ones with law degrees, so what do we know?

Cars 2 trailer

Cars 2 trailer – Click above to watch the video after the break

We’ve got a feeling that you’ve been dying to know exactly what Lightning McQueen is packing under his hood. Pixar has been kind enough to release specifications on some of the heavy hitters of the upcoming Cars 2, including our hero protagonist. As it turns out, McQueen boasts 750 horsepower from a V8 engine, which is good enough to get him to 60 miles per hour in around 3.2 seconds on his way to a top speed of 200 mph. Those figures would be good enough to make him the quickest machine in the World Grand Prix were it not for Francesco Bernoulli.

The Italian F1 racer also rocks 750 ponies, but can do the 0-60 mph dance in 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 220 mph. From the sound of things, it’s going to take some seriously fancy footwork for McQueen to take the checkered flag.

Pixar has released a third trailer that shows off a few more scenes from the movie. It looks like Mater will have a more prominent role in Cars 2 than in the first feature, as you’ll see from the video pasted after the break. You can also check out the specs on the rest of the competitors in the World Grand Prix as well.

While we’re on the Cars 2 kick, cruise over to Lego to see a seriously awesome play set. Is it too soon to start our holiday wish list?

Optimus Prime in Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon trailer – Click above to watch video after the jump

Summer is right around the corner, and that means theaters will soon be packed with the kind of action-slathered goodness that theater-goers crave. King of explosions Michael Bay has released the latest theatrical trailer for his new boomfest, Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon. Judging by the short clip, the whole crew is in for another sequel-baiting adventure. Bumblebee returns as the world’s most fearsome Chevrolet Camaro and Optimus Prime seems to have received a crash course in badassery since the last time we saw him grace the silver screen.

For reasons that remain unclear, the Prime has yet to punt Shia Labeouf into another galaxy, so fans can look forward to enduring him throughout the span of the film. Labeouf’s new co-star Rosie Huntington-Whitley seems to do a smart enough job of looking equal parts damsel and distressed. The film hits theaters on May 1, so you don’t have long to wait before you can sink your teeth into the action. Hit the jump to check out the trailer for yourself.

Cars 2 video game trailer

Cars 2 video game trailer – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Cars 2 is coming to theaters everywhere on June 24, and if we’re honest, we’re pretty stoked. The original Cars movie was, after all, a great flick with an all-car cast. And thanks to the popularity of the first Cars movie, Disney and Pixar plan to make a Mater-load of cash with this second round, and not just on the movie itself.

Disney Pixar is (predictably) working on the video game Cars 2: Spies Wanted, which will reportedly become available in July for the Sony PlayStation 3, XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii and DS. And this time, it looks like Lightning McQueen and the gang won’t be maxing and relaxing in secluded Radiator Springs.

Judging by the post-jump trailer, there appear to be bad guys, guns and rockets. We’re typically not all that thrilled about games that are based on a movie (because they usually aren’t that great), but since we’re always fans of games that involve driving, we may be willing to give this one a shot. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

Cars 2 goes international – Click above for high-res image gallery

Disney has dropped the latest trailer for Cars 2, and along with the two-minute clip past the break, they’ve released a slew of new images that make a nice addition to our gallery of Cars 2 characters.

In the second installment of our favorite car-related, Pixar-animated feature, the crew from Radiator Springs goes global, racing in the World Grand Prix and getting caught up in an international espionage ring. Naturally, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) once again take center stage, and judging by the trailer, the Pixar people continue to one-up their own efforts.

Hit the jump to see the action and check out the new gallery of pics below.

DiRT 3 shows off its Gymkhana mode, and no, hooning is not a crime – Click above to watch video after the jump

The third installment in the DiRT video game series is beginning to tantalize us with more teasers. This time around, the Codemasters team put together a clip showing off the game’s Gymkhana mode. It’s essentially a virtual version of Ken Block ruining the tires on his Ford Fiesta in typically spectacular fashion.

The video shows the Fiesta running through a Gymkhana course called the DC Compound. It features donut sections, obstacles to slide around or under and even a jump to take the hoonage to the skies. The game is scheduled to come out sometime in 2011 and will be available for the Xbox, PS3 and PC systems.

For now, all we can do is watch and wait – so grab the e-brake and slide across the jump.

Fast and Furious Five: Fast 5 trailer – Click above to watch video after the jump

You can make fun of the series all you want… but you know you are going to watch the next installment in the Fast and Furious franchise. The fifth film, called Fast 5, is set to hit theaters (including IMAX) on April 29th, 2011. Paul Walker and Vin Diesel are back again reprising the lead roles of Dom and Brian. Also back are Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Sung Kang (which is surprising since we’re pretty sure he died in Tokyo Drift, no?).

Fast 5 takes place in Rio de Janeiro, where the crew is forced to perform “one last job” in order to earn their freedom. A new law enforcement agent stands in their way – played by none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The film will surely be filled with plenty of gratuitous vehicular action that looks great on camera while breaking every conceivable law of physics.

The trailer for the film, which is available after the jump, features only a few clear shots at some of the cars in the flick. We spy (deep breath) an E39 5 Series, a pair of matte black Charger police cars, a modified 350Z, a resto-mod Charger, a few glimpses of parked Porsches, some assorted SUVs that are promptly trashed, an old VW bus, a Ford GT, what appears to be a Mongoose Motorsports Corvette Grand Sport Roadster replica, a Nissan GT-R and a few others we may have missed.

Live your life a trailer at a time… in the next two minutes or less… you’ll be free. Thanks for the tip, Alex!

Video: Forza Motorsport 4 trailer released, coming for GT5’s lunch money in Fall 2011 [w/poll]

Forza Motorsport 4 trailer teaser

Click above to watch the video after the jump

November 2010 was a big month for driving simulator-loving PlayStation 3 owners. Gran Turismo 5 finally hit store shelves nearly six years after GT4 set the gaming world aflame. GT5 is a PS3-only affair, though, so xBox fans have little to get excited about. But then again, most xBox champions probably feel they already have a hyper-realistic driving simulator courtesy of the Forza series. And according to the official Forza Motorsport website next Fall will see the debut of Forza 4.

That’s right; just one year after GT5 finally graced our presence and only two years after Forza 3 was minted, an all-new Forza is waiting in the wings. We’re a little shy on details at at this point, but we’re guessing the game will build upon the 500 cars in the Forza 3 Ultimate Collection, with more tracks, more racing styles and, hopefully, even more stunning graphics. Hit the jump to watch the Forza Motorsport 4 teaser, and chime in on the battle of Forza versus Gran Turismo in our poll below. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Revenge of the Electric Car movie trailer – Click above to watch video after the jump

It looks like at least 10,000 people want to see the preview for the new Revenge of the Electric Car movie. That was the number of “likes” the film’s producers set for the RotEC Facebook page, and now that the number has been hit, we have our first preview of what movie-going audiences will learn about when the flick hits the screen in the spring of 2011. The production team sent AutoblogGreen the following message just before the 10,000th fan clicked “like.”

Everyone on the “Revenge” team is incredibly thankful for all our wonderful fans who have spread the word to help us reach our 10,000 fan goal so quickly – we’re almost there! It also reminds us of how important people feel the electric car is to them. The fact that so many people want to see this film and spread the word proves how important it is for everyone to learn about electric vehicles as an alternative to gasoline-powered cars and to be informed about new developments in EV production and what kind of options there are out there for consumers ready to shift into an electric gear.

Enough talk, check out the clip after the jump.
