Video: Rush gets the Lego trailer treatment

What is it with reenacting real life and movies in Lego? It is now practically its own form of cinema, with so many spoofs of so many events that there are Top Ten lists highlighting excellent pieces of work like this Lego trailer for Cars 2, the 2012 London Olympics, a hilarious Star Wars trilogy recap and a comedy bit of Darth Vader in the Death Star canteen.

Next, the overlords of the brightly colored little jarheaded fellows have turned their attention to the movie Rush, making a stop-motion version of the latest trailer for Ron Howard’s Formula One thriller. It’s everything you’ve seen before, only smaller, and made of plastic, and you can watch it below.

Video: McLaren’s origin story gets the Tooned treatment

Filed under: Motorsports, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, McLaren

Second episode of Tooned features McLaren origin story.

British television network Sky has aired the second episode of Tooned, and this time, the digitally animated cartoon follows the story of McLaren founder Bruce McLaren and his early life in New Zealand. McLaren drivers, who were the focus of the first episode, take a back seat on this one.

The fable shows a young McLaren attempting to build his car to go 100 miles per hour through trial, error and fierce determination, knowing that he’d hit a few bumps along the road before he could become successful. His first race was in a modified Austin Seven that his father built, however, which is animated into the cartoon in the form of an old, red car.

Check out the video of McLaren’s child-friendly Formula One promo below. Parents, consider this a good time to introduce your children to the world of motorsports.

Autemo gives the ’75 International 150 pickup the rendering treatment

Filed under: Classics, Truck, Etc., Design/Style

1975 International 150 Pickup Automotive Rendering

1975 International 150 pickup rendering by Autemo – Click above for high-res image gallery

The resurrection of my International Harvester 150 pickup is moving along at a pace that could be described as somewhere between glacial and imperceptible. That’s especially curious considering that the hulk has a rather ravenous appetite for time and money that’s only eclipsed by its affinity for defecating disappointment all over the garage floor. Needless to say, any time I look at the big IH right now, I’m filled with sensations typically associated with ipecac.

And homicide.

So when the good folks at Autemo offered to take a crack at rendering the butternut millstone into something close to my ultimate vision for the project, I was a little skeptical. It wasn’t that I doubted the site’s skills. Autemo is a gateway between enthusiasts and a global network of artists with a similar passion for vehicles. If you’ve got a laundry list of modifications in mind, the crew at Autemo can render them into photo-realistic images in a hurry so that you know exactly what they look like before you spend buckets of cash on parts. So far, the site has served up designs to over 250 clients.

But I’m a man of meager goals, especially when it comes down to this truck. The simple fact is that I’d pawn an organ or three just to be able to pilot the beast across town without having to worry about careening into oncoming traffic, erupting into a fireball or, most dreaded of all, have to be towed home by an inferior model pickup.

There is no greater shame.

That’s not to say that I don’t have a vision for what I’d do with the machine if I had more money than sense. Jack Davies, the founder of Autemo, urged me test his rendering abilities with whatever wants I could dream up no matter how specific. I set aside a solid afternoon for daydreaming and got to work.

Range Rover Evoque gets the Benedict Radcliffe wireframe art treatment [w/video]

Land Rover Evoque goes wireframe – Click above to watch video after the jump

Land Rover is officially in love with wireframe artwork. In September of 2010, four artists were commissioned to produce wireframe interpretations of the Range Rover Evoque. For the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Land Rover reached out to artist Benedict Radcliffe for a redux of sorts.

Radcliffe’s wireframe take on the Range Rover Evoque is (supposedly) meant to showcase the personalization options available to Land Rover customers. The entire piece can be broken down into several smaller pieces that showcase various options available on the Evoque.

Click past the jump to watch a behind-the-scenes video that shows how Radcliffe produces his wireframe artwork. So… how long until this piece shows up at the Tate Modern?

Video: VW Darth Vader Super Bowl ad gets the Toyota spoof treatment

Darth Vader Commercial Spoof Toyota

Click above to watch the video after the jump

Volkswagen’s Darth Vader Super Bowl ad has all the trimmings of an all-time classic. It involves kids and the most famous Star Wars character of all time. Who doesn’t love kids and Star Wars? And, perhaps most importantly, the big game spot was hugely funny. Beyond that, from the moment we first laid eyes on the ad we were certain that this clever spot would spawn a raft of Vader spoofs. We haven’t been disappointed.

Beyond the jump is the latest Vader spoof. This time, the mini Jedi trades in his 2011 Passat for a previous-generation Toyota Corolla. But while the original spot was fun and playful, this spoof takes a turn for the Dark Side. Junior Vader chokes his mom, throws his dad and even uses his Jedi mind to lift the toilet seat. But in the end, the edgier Vader meets a force more powerful than the Dark Side. Hit the jump to watch the Violent Broccoli creation – the ending is a bit predictable, but it’s still worth checking out. Thanks to all for the tips!

AdSpotting: Dodge Charger gets the “Never Neutral” treatment

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Dodge

2011 Dodge Charger

2011 Dodge Charger Never Neutral ads – Click above to watch after the jump

Company: Chrysler

Brand: Dodge

Medium: TV Ad

Ad Agency: Wieden & Kennedy, Portland, Oregon.

Product: 2011 Dodge Charger

Campaign: “Never Neutral”

What We Like: The re-do on the 2011 Dodge Charger turned a car that was one half of a two-suits-for-the-price-of-one deal into a slick, polished and nicely sprung sedan that now earns our respect. The “Never Neutral” marketing campaign debuted last week at the Chicago Auto Show and comes across in these ads as a decent tag-line for the Charger. We like the attitude that the Charger is a car for people who still enjoy real driving, don’t moan about pumping their own gas and aren’t necessarily swayed by the reputations of other brands that are now bigger than their current sheet-metal supports. In these two ads, Chrysler takes aim squarely at Google’s self-driving car and Mitsubishi’s online test drive “experience”, (though picking on Mitsubishi at this point is like taunting Urkel), as well as referencing the Matrix movies, which never hurts.

What We Don’t Like: Making a statement about the Dodge brand being for real drivers and sticking a thumb in the eye of a couple of competitors is all well and good, but could we get some edgier writing here? All they could come up with to ridicule Mitsubishi’s online test-drive is, “That’s absurd.” As we used to say in the newspaper biz, “Get me rewrite!”

Strategy: Dodge is positioning itself as the brand of vehicles for those who appreciate that Detroit is still the capital of car-making in the U.S., and that driving a responsive automobile is a fine American value. We absolutely loved the ad from 2010 showing George Washington leading his troops into battle against the British redcoats in Dodge Challengers, and we like the similar attitude on display here. But this approach to selling Dodge’s new image around Americana, American values and for people who relish having a real set of wheels is a bit of a high wire act dependent on the creative teams batting well above .500.

Grade: B-

What do you think? Watch the ads for yourself after the jump.

Chicago 2011: Dodge gives Grand Caravan, Journey the R/T treatment for 2011

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show, Minivan/Van, Crossover, Dodge

2011 Dodge Grand Caravan R/T

As part of Chrysler’s giant product onslaught for the 2011 model year, The Pentastar has released new R/T trim levels of both the Dodge Grand Caravan and Journey crossover. Both models make their debut at the Chicago Auto Show this week, and while there aren’t any big power boosts, the spruced up exterior and interior designs speak of sportiness.

Both the Grand Caravan and Journey R/T use Chrysler’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, pumping out 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission. The minivan is only available with front-wheel drive, though an all-wheel-drive variant of the Journey R/T is available.

Outside, the Grand Caravan R/T gets new appearance tweaks like a “dipped” body-colored grille, body-colored side moldings and a new set of 17-inch alloy wheels. Likewise, the Journey R/T features the same sort of exterior treatment, but rides on larger 19-inch aluminum wheels with a satin carbon finish. Inside, both vehicles benefit from upgrades like black seats with red contrast stitching throughout, as well as the latest in Chrysler connectivity and infotainment.

The 2011 Grand Caravan R/T and Journey R/T will arrive at dealerships this Spring, priced from $30,595 and $28,995, respectively. Opting for the all-wheel-drive Journey R/T will set you back $30,695, and you can read the full suite of details in the automaker’s press release, after the jump.

Video: Top Gear Mexico remarks get the animated dramatization treatment

Next Media Animation of Top Gear Mexico controversy

Mexico takes on Top Gear in animated form – Click above to watch video after the jump

It started with politically incorrect commentary from Jerermy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May; the hosting trio of the BBC’s Top Gear. When discussing the Mexican-built Mastretta MXT, the three quickly turned to jokes relating the car to stereotypical viewpoints on Mexican citizens.

Shortly thereafter, the Mexican Ambassador didn’t find the spot humorous and complained to the BBC, which in turn has issued an apology (kind of). Now this entire affair has reached the modern pinnacle of worldwide attention… it’s been (That’s right, you guessed it!) turned into a cartoon by Next Media Animation. Finally!

Click past the jump to view Taiwan’s take on the the show’s falling out with Mexico. And remember, Top Gear can suck it!

2012 Hyundai Veloster

2012 Hyundai Veloster B-roll footage – Click above to watch video after the jump

B-roll footage isn’t necessarily the most exciting visual or aural experience, but it allows us to see new production models strutting their stuff out on the road. Hyundai is wasting no time in getting the B-roll footage out of the recently debuted 2012 Veloster, and here we see a pair of brightly-colored three-door coupes mixing it up on a desert test track.

As it typical with B-roll footage, there’s no music and the only sound comes from what the microphones picked up. Our suggestion? Go to YoutubeDoubler.com and spice it up yourself, though you know you’re just going to add music from the movie Inception. Click past the jump to see the 2012 Hyundai Veloster in action.
