Jaguar F-Type Coupe R-S: Spy Shots

It’s no secret that Jaguar is working on a fixed-roof version of the F-Type roadster, but now it looks like it’s also developing a high-performance model for said coupe. Captured sharpening its claws at the Nürburgring, this F-Type Coupe prototype could very well be an R-S or even a more track-ready R-S GT variant.

Our biggest clue suggesting the latter are its massive brake rotors with bright-yellow calipers – similar pieces are also found on the recently introduced XKR-S GT. This would make sense, since a report in May said that Jaguar is looking to create a full line of R-S GT models in a similar fashion as the Mercedes-Benz AMG Black Series. Missing from this prototype, though, are the telltale aero add-ons we saw on the XKR-S GT – go-faster bits like the latter’s front fascia winglets and rear wing, though this model is obviously still being developed. Regardless of what this new grippier, quicker kitty is called, we say “Yes, please.”

Report: Jaguar F-Type coupe to cost more than convertible?

Filed under: Spy Photos, Convertible, Coupe, Jaguar

Jaguar F-Type Coupe Spied at the Nurburgring

Jaguar may price the much-rumored F-Type Coupe above the F-Type Convertible, if a report from Australia’s Drive is to be believed. What makes Jag think that such a pricing strategy would work? Porsche. Take a look at the German manufacturer’s consumer site, and you’ll notice that the Boxster is less expensive than the Cayman, despite being essentially the same car.

It’s a fair point, and a price premium does a good job of emphasizing the sporting chops of the coupe over the open-air experience that normally entitles convertibles to higher MSRPs. It’s unclear just how closely Jaguar will follow Porsche’s example, though.

Both the Cayman and Cayman S boast an extra ten horsepower over a Boxster or Boxster S, and while this bump in grunt is negligible in every situation but an argument over which is “best,” it isn’t something to be ignored in the F-Type, particularly as cranking more power out of its supercharged engines should be a rather simple matter.

Drive also points out something quite exciting: with an F-Type Coupe on the way, the groundwork has now been laid for a dedicated R and RS model. We can’t wait.

Video: Watch Chris Harris pilot a vintage Jaguar C-Type at the Mille Miglia

Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Convertible, Europe, Videos, Jaguar, Celebrities, Specialty, Racing

Jaguar is a regular runner in the Mille Miglia – in 2010 it entered 27 cars in the historic rally to celebrate its 75th anniversary. This year, in celebration of the F-Type, it registered just four cars with the factory team, but it loaded them up with some bigwig UK celebs like Daniel Day Lewis and Jasmin Le Bon. Chris Harris, our own autoverse celeb, was given a seat in a Jaguar C-Type with professional racing driver Alex Buncombe.

While Harris takes us on a tour of the route, he takes us on an even better tour of what the Mille Miglia is and what it takes to run it. It’s a mess of memories, minutes, mementos and sleepless nights. The C-Type was first owned by Juan Manuel Fangio. Stages are timed and require one to drive at a set speed – once, when Buncombe and Harris arrive 90 minutes early they’re forced to sit in the car for an hour. Then they sleep for four hours before getting back into a C-Type with an unsilenced exhaust. “There’s no better way to get tinnitus.”

You can watch the highlights of Harris’ run from Brescia to Rome and back in the video below.

Rumormill: Jaguar working on 700-hp, 200-mph hybrid F-Type?

2013 Jaguar F-Type - front three-quarter view

After first driving the 2014 Jaguar F-Type in Spain this spring, we came away mighty impressed. Of course, if you had to pin us down for a top three wish list of what improvements we’d like to see, we’d probably hit you with something like: 1) Less weight. 2) Less weight and 3) Less weight. Oh, and if we’re feeling presumptuous, maybe some additional transmission choices.

Despite leveraging aluminum for the body and chassis, this Jaguar is still a bit of a fat cat compared to its rival models from Porsche. We never felt like it was lacking for power in any of its three supercharged trims, least of them the 495-horsepower V8 S, which is a genuine madman. We knew the variants would come, though – a quick look at the rest of Jag’s lineup provides all the evidence you need of that. And so we’re not surprised to see word of a hyper-powered F-Type on the horizon, an R-S version. What is surprising, however, is a new report that put its motivation at over 700 horsepower and its top speed at 200+ mph. Us? We’re just hoping the latter figure comes at least partially as a result of a hardcore diet.

This F-Type R-S news comes according to the rumormongers at AutoExpress, who expect the high-power Brit to come in coupe form, at least initially. We still haven’t seen the debut of the fixed-head F, but plenty of spy shots suggest its arrival is imminent. Wildly, AE posits that Jag won’t look for more displacement to gain power, it will instead radically downsize by using a 1.6-liter turbo- and supercharged four-cylinder and an array of electric motors. If that sounds familiar, that’s because AE suggests the high-tech powertrain will be scavenged from the defunct C-X75 supercar program (interestingly, earlier reports suggested this combination would only deliver about 500 horsepower).

AutoExpress says we’re in for a bit of a wait before the F-Type R-S checks in, likely 2016 or later. Intriguing as it all sounds, we won’t exactly be holding our breath…

Video: Jaguar F-Type squares off against Porsche 911, Aston V8 Vantage with Chris Harris

Filed under: Convertible, Videos, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Porsche

Chris Harris is back on the job, taking on really really difficult car questions like: Which enormously sexy and good-to-drive, high-performance convertible is the top of the heap? As one of the hottest cars in the luxury space right now, the Jaguar F-Type S is, of course, in on the action. Competition comes in the form of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster and the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. Sun-loving CEOs who despise test-driving need look no further.

Scroll on below for a fully featured (with a running time of more than 20 minutes) comparison video. Harris does his best to entertain – in a typically nitpicky and made-up-British-words fashion – and the moving pictures are lovely to look at. Kick back, pour a pint and get your weekend started off right.

Spy Shots: Jaguar F-Type Coupe proves sexy can’t be disguised

Jaguar F-Type Coupe spy shots

Jaguar’s new F-Type is a pretty potent little pouncer. And while we do love a good roadster, many of us at Autoblog are perhaps more excited about the upcoming hardtop version of Jag’s stylish new entry-level sports car. Why? Because even here in heavily camouflaged prototype form, the thing looks really, really good – the sleek roofline blending rather nicely into the F-Type’s shapely rump, allowing for better distinction of its pronounced hips over the rear wheel wells.

Mechanically speaking, the F-Type Coupe should be identical to its droptop sibling. That means the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 engine lineup should carry over unchanged, though we’ve heard rumors about a four-cylinder application as well. There’s also talk of hotter R, R-S or R-S GT models coming down the pipeline, and based on what we’ve experienced in things like the XKR-S, we certainly can’t deny the allure of such a model.

It’s unclear exactly when Jaguar will show the production F-Type Coupe (at the Frankfurt Motor Show, perhaps?), but the car is expected to go on sale sometime in 2014. Check it out in our latest spy gallery, above.

Video: Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee season 2 opens with Sarah Silverman and Jag E-Type

Filed under: Classics, Convertible, Performance, Videos, Jaguar, Celebrities, Humor

Season Two of Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee kicked this week in style. How much more style is there to be had than in a 1969 Jaguar XKE, after all? This time around, Seinfeld and Sarah Silverman spend some time driving around in the “slinky, sexy” Jag, talking comedy and then grabbing breakfast.

In addition to the kickoff of the show’s second season, this episode also represents the start of a 24-episode sponsorship with Acura. The original deal promised short ads at the beginning and end of each episode, but this time around, Seinfeld “stumbles upon” a 2014 Acura RLX, which is obviously – and admittedly – the work of product integration. Scroll down to watch Seinfeld and Silverman exchange banter with the Jag’s beauty as a happy backdrop.

Jaguar Lightweight E-Type introduced to Southern California traffic

jaguar lightweight e-type accident

A staple vehicle at Irvine, California’s Cars and Coffee, this Jaguar Lightweight E-Type was heading north on Interstate 5 when it was involved in an accident. Cited in the article as a “1968 Jaguar,” this car is either a Lightweight E-Type replica or the article has the year wrong. Regardless, it’s a beautiful machine, and you can see it in its pre-smashed state on The Car Lounge.

Witnesses report that the Jag lost a rear wheel, which led to a chain reaction accident involving a Honda Civic, Toyota Yaris and a semi-truck. Drivers and passengers in the Civic and Yaris were taken to UCI Medical Center, while the driver of the Jaguar and the big rig were unhurt. Well… the driver of this Jaguar wasn’t physically hurt.

Panzani Design goes all Deathstar with Jaguar S-Type Vintage GT

Panzani Design Jaguar S-Type Vintage GT

For better or worse, nothing is quite as divisive as modern Jaguar design. The current XF is controversial enough in its own right, but the S-Type that came before was even more so. With its pinched grille and comically retro lines, the S-Type was the very antithesis of the model that followed. So how about making the old girl even more of a love-it or hate-it affair? Not an easy task, but Panzani Design has clearly risen to the challenge.

Reaching back a few years to when the S-Type was still around, the Italian tuner has given the retro Jag saloon such up-to-date features as 20-inch wheels mounted on a track widened by 10 centimeters and enormously flared arches to accommodate them. There’s also a new front bumper with integrated LEDs, a carbon fiber hood with vents, mesh lamp covers, side skirts, spoiler, diffuser, little round mirrors and what looks to be a very intricately crafted interior.

The result is all decked out in matte gray and called the Vintage GT. It may not be your cup of tea, but it’s worth a second glance, so check it out in the gallery below for all the angles.

Reimagined Jaguar E-Type to enter very limited production

2011 Growler E concept

2012 Growler E concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Swedish design firm Visualtech has confirmed it will build a very limited run of production cars based on its Growler E, a reimagining of the Jaguar E-Type. According to the company, plans are to have the first Growler ready for delivery in the summer of 2012.

Speaking of plans, the current goal is to produce three or four of the cars to be finished simultaneously. If there’s overwhelming demand, Visualtech may decided to build a very short series run of the cars, with help from Steyr or Finnish firm Valmet.

The car is to be powered by a Jaguar XKR-sourced 5.0-liter supercharged V8. With a few choice tweaks, the Growler should close in on the 600-horsepower mark. Visualtech hopes that will lead to a 0-60 run under 4 seconds.

The Growler will have a composite body glued to a carbon fiber structure, with front and rear tube frames holding the running gear. Should you have the wherewithal to order a Growler, expect to pay nearly $700,000 if they make a series run, and closer to $1.4 million if they only make a few.
