Report: Bangle urges auto design shakeup, says industry not innovating

LA AUTO SHOW

Controversial designer Chris Bangle, the man behind the notorious E65 BMW 7-Series “Bangle Butt,” has some rather sharp criticism for the current crop of automotive designers in an upcoming full-length interview with Automotive News Europe. The preview, posted on Automotive News, details parts of the interview, with the always vocal Bangle lamenting the state of modern automotive design.

“Even concept cars today simply anticipate the next production model coming down the line. Is this innovation? No. And at the end of the day this is what’s preventing car design from moving into a new era.” Controversial as Bangle’s design philosophy may be, we can’t help but think he has a point. His so-called “flame surfacing” at BMW and other stylistic elements had a huge influence on modern automotive design, although as the years have passed, there hasn’t been much innovation on the same scale.

Interestingly, Bangle also mentions that he’s been courted by a few manufacturers that wanted to install the American as the head of their design teams. He’s flatly rejected them, telling ANE, “It’s not something you can do part time, you have to do it with all your heart and soul or you’re going to get it wrong.”

The full interview with Chris Bangle will go live at on Automotive News Europe’s website on Monday, September 2.

Report: Mulally urges Capitol Hill to adopt national fuel standard

ford ceo alan mulally

Will there be one fuel standard to rule them all? Ford CEO Alan Mulally certainly hopes so, and he’s letting Washington know. As manufacturers spend time and money pushing to reach established Corporate Average Fuel Economy goals, some states are looking to set their own rules. That could prove to be a tricky – and hugely expensive – proposition for the automakers.

We know we said “some states,” but you all know the one we’re talking about. California is (once again) considering the idea of setting its own average fuel economy rules starting in 2017, and the federal government is (once again) considering letting them. Currently, California and the federal government agree that fleet-wide fuel efficiency will be required to hit 34.1 miles per gallon starting in 2012, a figure that runs through 2016.

As part of a visit to D.C. this week, Mulally told House members and Bill Daley, White House Chief of Staff (among others), that he wants the government to step up and standardize fuel economy and emissions rules, which would prevent states from breaking out their own guidelines.

“Enjoy The Ride” PSA – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Remember the Embrace Life PSA that urged auto occupants to use their safety belts? It’s a beautiful safety ad with a very powerful message. The Road Safety Council of Western Australia must have been watching, because they’ve taken their safety message to the next level of serenity.

Beyond the jump is a three-minute ad titled “Enjoy The Ride.” The first two minutes of the video explain how important it is to slow down in every day life. If you don’t, the PSA explains, you’re on the fast track to early aging, heart disease and even erectile dysfunction. You wouldn’t know this is an auto safety spot until the last minute of the PSA, when the real message reveals itself. Slow down and enjoy the ride. Hit the jump to view the video – just be prepared to breath a little deeper… you may want to join yoga after this. Hat tip to Chris!

Report: Jaguar urges execs to move to China or risk promotions

Filed under: China, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, UK, Rumormill

Jaguar LogoFrom the sound of things, Jaguar’s hunger for a slice of the Chinese auto market may be causing growing pains. According to The Daily Telegraph, Des Thurlby, the human resources director for the car maker, has been doing his best to encourage executives to pull up roots and do a tour of duty in either China, the United States or Russia. The British news agency calls some of Thurlby’s conversations “pointed,” with the director indicating that those workers who choose to skip a stint in international waters are less likely to see promotion within the company.

China has recently grown to become the third largest market for Jaguar vehicles after the U.S. and United Kingdom, and the company seems to have a serious desire to begin manufacturing operations in the People’s Republic. That would require a substantial chunk of employees to move to China for sessions that usually last up to three years. Needless to say, those with spouses and children aren’t exactly keen to pack up the house and move across the globe.

Report: NADA president urges Fed to reconsider fuel rules

Ed Tonkin, NADAThe National Automobile Dealers Association has joined the ranks of those opposed to upping Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards to 60 mpg by 2025. The dealer group says that with fuel prices still low, consumers are more interested in horsepower and style than they are super-efficient vehicles. That means that if the federal government starts mandating ever more efficient vehicles that are significantly costlier to manufacture, dealers are likely to see sales falter as automakers have to elevate MSRPs to keep from losing their shirts. That’s the fear of NADA chairman Ed Tonkin and his constituents. Tonkin should know – he himself owns a mutli-brand dealership in Portland.

Of course, Tonkin’s argument hinges against further upping CAFE numbers hinges upon fuel prices staying at their current levels — something that even the most optimistic minds are hesitant to believe. The federal government is expected to unveil its plan for increasing fuel economy standards early next year. So far, word has it that the Obama Administration is looking to impose an average of 35 mpg by 2016 and as much as 60 mpg by 2025.

Report: Toyota urges judges to throw out unintended acceleration lawsuits

ToyotaToyota has asked a United States judge to throw out the majority of its pending lawsuits on the grounds that the cases are based on anecdotal and circumstantial information. The automaker is currently facing over 300 lawsuits that vary from personal injury to economic loss, nearly all of which are tied in one way or another to the company’s rash of unintended acceleration issues. To date this year, Toyota has recalled eight million vehicles globally for varying reasons, including accelerator pedals that could become entrapped.

Some of the lawsuits have been bundled for pre-trial rulings. These consumer cases claim that the quality woes the recalled Toyota models face have driven down the value of those products substantially. Likewise, the company’s claims of quality, safety and reliability have been called into question. Toyota has responded by saying that any claims made in its advertisements were opinion and to be taken as such.

The combined lawsuits are being handled in Santa Ana, Californa, where Toyota asked the judge to dismiss the cases against the company.
