Rush The Movie - trailer screencap of F1 field in the rain

Rush, the upcoming Ron Howard flick that focuses on the intense rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda during the 1976 Formula One World Championship, is looking better and better with each trailer.

The most recent spot focuses on Hunt, playing up his reputation as a notorious womanizer and playboy. You get a glimpse of the transformation that Chris Hemsworth’s character goes through as the movie proceeds, from the free spirit shown in the beginning of the trailer to the intense competitor eager to best Lauda.

Take a look at the trailer below and be sure to check out the previous clips here and here. Rush hits theaters on September 27. Don’t plan on much from Autoblog that day – we’ll all be at the theater.

Video: See how Motor Trend performs instrumented testing on a Viper

MotorTrend has a rigorous set of instrumented testing procedures, and they are given a closer look in the buff book’s latest YouTube video, as it tackles the 2013 SRT Viper.

Using a stylish, white and silver SRT Viper, host Jessi Lang takes us through the battery of tests that each new car receives. That includes the more mundane acceleration runs, with some interesting tips from Scott Mortara on what it takes to charm the 640-horsepower snake.

Vehicle dynamics are also put under a microscope with MT’s figure-eight testing. Motor Trend‘s Testing Director Kim Reynolds shows off the suite of testing instruments used on the Viper before heading out to conduct the test.

Check out the full video below.

Video: Intrepid farmer plows fire line in hay field

Colorado is in the grips of its nearly annual summer wildfires. The fast-moving fires are fed by dry conditions and high winds, and have resulted in desperate attempts on the part of some residents to save their homes and livelihoods.

This farmer in Weld County, roughly an hour north of Denver, is attempting to cut a fire line into his hay field in a bid to contain the blaze. It’s unclear if the farmer was successful, as the helicopter video contains no commentary and was taken a few days ago.

Still, this video serves as a gripping reminder of the cost of these fires and just how determined citizens are to stop them. And for those that think this isn’t a big deal, consider that what this farmer is doing is exceedingly dangerous. Without a clear mind about his surroundings, the fire could have easily overtaken and surrounded him, and with so much smoke, breathable air is at a premium. Scroll down for a closer look.

Video: New Chevy Silverado ad aims for the cowgirl market

Filed under: Truck, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Chevrolet

Chevrolet is continuing its marketing blitz during the launch of the new Chevy Silverado with another ad toting the new truck’s safe towing capacity – even when you’ve got a “a 1200-pound passenger and 355 horses to get there.”

It’s a touching spot that tries to equate the connection someone feels to an animal best friend with the connection one has with a prized vehicle. We like the emotional direction Chevy’s gone in, as it’s quite different from, say, hearing a gravelly Denis Leary talk about the Ford F-150. And clearly, GM sees the need to market its new fullsize pickup to women in addition to men.

Still, this rural Chevy commercial has nothing on the Ram 1500 Super Bowl ad. Click below for the spot.

Video: Burnout turns Holden HSV Clubsport into epic fireball

Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Holden

Michael ‘Gup’ Gilbert is the Australian owner of Powercruise. The cruising car show is for those who like to “beat on their cars rather than look at them from their lawn chair,” touts the company’s web site. Understandably, the mastermind behind the event has build some very impressive street cars, including the heavily modified Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) making a rather abbreviated appearance in the video below.

Not happy with the factory stock 6.2-liter LS3 under the hood of his daily driver HSV Clubsport, Gup replaced it with a 727-cubic-inch V8 (do the math – its displacement is more than 11.9-liters!) from Sonny’s Racing Components. The $55,900 crate engine makes a whopping 1,275 horsepower on standard 91 octane pump gas, thanks in part to a massive 3,500-cfm throttle body perched on top. Custom-mounted in the nose of his Holden, Gup chose to send all of the power rearward through a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission working through a nine-inch differential. The numbers speak for themselves – late last year, the car ran the quarter in 10.5 at 140 miles per hour.

But all good things, including this right-hand-drive Holden, will eventually come to an end. We don’t know exactly what gave out during the demonstration at Powercruise USA held at Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota this past weekend, but it sure expired in spectacular fashion. See for yourself below.

Video: Perp steals cop car from back seat, makes dangerous getaway

In an episode that wouldn’t have been out of place on Reno 911!, a man that was on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs, alcohol or both, was picked up by police for stealing a pickup truck, and managed to wriggle out of his handcuffs and steal the police cruiser he was being held inside. The entire fiasco, which took place last month near Salt Lake City, can be seen on the cruiser’s in-car cameras.

The suspect, Gordon Graham, took advantage of the officers’ inattentiveness while they were searching his truck, contorting about so his hands were in front of him, and then wiggling out of the cuffs. He then dove head-first through a flap that was opened for him after complaining about the heat, got in the driver’s seat, and made a break for freedom.

After nearly hitting one of the deputies in his escape, Graham lead police on a high-speed chase across two Utah counties. He eventually abandoned the cruiser, leading cops on a two-hour manhunt.

Not surprisingly, police caught up with him. Graham was charged, plead guilty and was sentenced to prison for second-degree receiving stolen property, second-degree theft and two counts of shoplifting in the third degree.

Check out the two videos below for a rundown of the chase. The first is a newcast from KSL TV in Salt Lake, while the other is in-car video of Graham’s escape from the handcuffs.

Video: Watch Chris Harris pilot a vintage Jaguar C-Type at the Mille Miglia

Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Convertible, Europe, Videos, Jaguar, Celebrities, Specialty, Racing

Jaguar is a regular runner in the Mille Miglia – in 2010 it entered 27 cars in the historic rally to celebrate its 75th anniversary. This year, in celebration of the F-Type, it registered just four cars with the factory team, but it loaded them up with some bigwig UK celebs like Daniel Day Lewis and Jasmin Le Bon. Chris Harris, our own autoverse celeb, was given a seat in a Jaguar C-Type with professional racing driver Alex Buncombe.

While Harris takes us on a tour of the route, he takes us on an even better tour of what the Mille Miglia is and what it takes to run it. It’s a mess of memories, minutes, mementos and sleepless nights. The C-Type was first owned by Juan Manuel Fangio. Stages are timed and require one to drive at a set speed – once, when Buncombe and Harris arrive 90 minutes early they’re forced to sit in the car for an hour. Then they sleep for four hours before getting back into a C-Type with an unsilenced exhaust. “There’s no better way to get tinnitus.”

You can watch the highlights of Harris’ run from Brescia to Rome and back in the video below.

Video: Bunny couldn’t out hop a BMW M3 on-track

Driving a car is a dangerous hobby, and not just because of other drivers or poor roads. Sometimes, it seems like even the wildlife is out to get you, as evidenced here, here, here, here and here. Now, we can add one more unfortunate car-versus-animal encounter to the tally.

Perhaps believing that this bright orange BMW M3 GTS was a very fast, very loud carrot, an unfortunate bunny leaped into its windshield in a brutal accident at a Polish racetrack. Considering the M3’s speed at the time, 89 miles per hour, the passengers are lucky to be okay. Obviously, Bugs didn’t make it.

The BMW isn’t in such great shape, though. The windshield is in a bit of a state, with safety glass sprayed all over the passenger side of the cabin. There doesn’t appear to be any sheetmetal damage, at least from what we can tell from the video. Although there isn’t any blood, the hit is really hard. The initial point of impact is at 0:57. Check out the video below.

Video: Highlights from the Goodwood Festival of Speed, including the McLaren P1 and a Ford Transit running the hill

Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Europe, Videos, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Peugeot, UK, McLaren

The sole purpose of this post is as a time-waster, and since you shouldn’t have to work to waste time, we’ve done it for you. In the numerous videos below you’ll find cars that have lately been in the news tramping all over the grounds of Lord March’s estate in Goodwood, England.

There’s the McLaren P1 heading up the hill, the Jaguar Project 7, then a casually-driven Porsche 917 followed by an even-more-casually-driven Porsche 956, topped off by a Porsche 936 that is anything but casually driven. The next round is the flame-spitting Peugeot 405 T16 Pikes Peak from Climb Dance, a camera mounted on the Peugeot RCZ R after it showing you what the whole, uninterrupted run up the hill looks like. For a real head-turner, we couldn’t embed it but there’s Andy Reid blasting up the hill in a Ford Transit Supervan with a Cosworth 3000 V6 engine.

The modern racing contingent has Allan McNish doing the hill in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro he used to win Le Mans and Lewis Hamilton making lots of tire smoke in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas MGP-W02. For comparison, that’s followed by Nick Heidfeld’s record-setting run up the hill in 1999 in the McLaren MP4/14 . The classic racing contingent is headlined by 71-year-old Giacomo Agostini on an MV Agusta.

Finally, there are the miscellaneous exhaust notes of all kinds of supercars headed to the start for the supercar run. You’ll find it all below. Enjoy.

Video: Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG officially teased in mini video

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Videos, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury

The followup to the Mercedes-Benz S550, the S63 AMG, will sport a biturbocharged V8 that will likely turn out around 550 horsepower. The new engine is probably the 5.5-liter, biturbocharged V-8 that’s been popping up in everything from the ML63 to the E63 AMG. The front fascia is more aggressive, which shouldn’t come as a surprise, while a meaty exhaust setup can be found out back.

We managed to pick all that up from a short, 17-second video posted by MB. The original video that unveiled the S63 AMG has since been pulled down, making this YouTube clip the best look we now have at the new super sedan, at least until the Germans give up the goods for real.

Be sure to check out the video below, along with our original posting on the S63 AMG.
