Video: Honda takes us through 50 years of automobiles in 60 seconds

Honda’s wonderfully simple, fun ads are not in short supply right now. We showed you Hands, the followup to 2003’s The Cog, last week. If you haven’t had a chance to look at those two great videos, we strongly encourage you to head over that way and give them a watch.

The latest minute-long commercial is a bit more dear, though. And while it may be in Japanese, it’s still a cool look back at Honda and its car-building history.

This is also a great video if you’re a fan of odd, vintage Japanese vehicles. Honda’s T360 and a few old Civics are featured heavily, although we can’t help but notice that a few very big names are missing. Where’s the NSX or the S2000? How about the original Insight, a car so revolutionary it still has a cult following today? Honda has made some great cars, we just wish it’d show off more of them. Check out the video below.

Video: Impala crashes into Land Cruiser… to hide from a cheetah

Filed under: SUV, Etc., Videos, Toyota

What would you do if a wild animal jumped into your vehicle through an open window during an African safari? What if said animal was an impala being chased by cheetahs? Though the scenario seems unbelievable, that’s just what happened to a group of tourists in Kruger National Park in South Africa, and it was all caught on video.

With the tour groups stopped, a motorist with a video camera handy happens to catch the unlikely sight of a herd of impalas (not that kind of Impala) jumping over the tarmac while being followed, quickly of course, by two cheetahs. The feline predators thought they had cornered one impala and were closing in for the kill when it jumped through the open window of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado – South Africa’s version of the Lexus GX. Fortunately for the occupants of said vehicle, the cheetahs did not follow.

A short while later, one of the occupants in the Toyota fearlessly opens a door to let the poor animal out. It must have been its lucky day, because the cheetahs didn’t take pursuit. Check out the circle life get interrupted by this traffic jam in the video below.

Video: Razor Crazy Cart may be the coolest kid-size drift car money can buy

It might as well be a fact that if you want to get ahead in the world of motorsports, you need to start young. And since most toddlers can’t see over the wheel or reach the pedals in an actual car, karts are the most logical option. Unfortunately, big league karts are not cheap.

Enter the Crazy Cart, from Razor. Somehow, we doubt there’s ever been a better way of teaching a small child about car control. With four corner-mounted castors and a single electrically powered wheel below the steering column, the Crazy Cart can make any pre-schooler a drifting master. That central wheel can turn 360 degrees, which blesses the Crazy Cart with sublime agility and ease of control. A tiny handbrake is also available, for even more lurid sliding.

Of course, there are concerns. One Autoblog staffer called it “a pediatrician’s nightmare,” and while it does look stable, we’d be inclined to agree. And then there’s the $400 asking price. While it’s expensive, it’s probably a lot cheaper than dropping money on a kart, only to find out that your kid isn’t all that into it. And besides, as the video shows, it can handle an adult.

In that case, we’ll take seven. Check out the video below for the full rundown of the Crazy Cart’s abilities.

Video: VW Golf GTI wrung out by Chris Harris

Chris Harris with Mk VII Volkswagen GTI - video screencap

Enthusiasts like nothing more than to crucify modern interpretations of their favorite performance models for failing to live up to some imagined ethos. Even the Volkswagen GTI has suffered its fair share of slings and arrows for growing in size and curb weight. Chris Harris recently spent some time with the all-new MK VII GTI to find out if growing up means giving up on what makes the machine so special.

Judging by his comments, Harris certainly doesn’t think so. Yes, the new GTI is considerably more comfortable than its predecessors, but that’s hardly a bad thing. The multitude of driving modes actually seem to add depth to the car rather than simply try to force one tool to do many jobs, and Harris even finds the machine’s electronic power steering tolerable. As a result, Harris goes so far as to call the Volkswagen GTI “one of the best cars to actually own.” How’s that for high praise? You can watch the video for yourself by scrolling below.

Video: The Homer to contest 24 Hours of LeMons

The Homer 24 Hours of Lemons racer - video screencap

It’s finally happened. A 24 Hours of LeMons team has built the definitive interpretation of The Homer from The Simpsons for competition in an upcoming race. As you may recollect, The Homer is the fictional car designed by Homer Simpson for his brother’s car company. Designed with a separate compartment for screaming children and other Homer-centric goodies, the animated machine bankrupted its parent company and put Homer’s brother out of a job. Now we get to watch it race other crap cans as it tackles Southern California’s Buttonwillow Raceway on June 29. Scott Chamberlain, Kris Linquist, Reid Conti, Ben Reilly and Mike Yepes will helm the machine, and Jeff Herman serves as the team’s creative director.

The racer is the latest incarnation of a well-abused BMW 3 Series. The team campaigned the same E30 under the “Prickstine” banner as a Chrysler Imperial tribute and “Porcubimmer,” the latter being a riff on the ever-popular joke about the difference between porcupines and BMW models. Never gets old. You can check out a video of the finished Homer below, and be sure to like the team on Facebook to see updates from the race. Now, about that Canyonero…

Video: How Fast and Furious 6 should have ended

Fast and Furious 6 - How It Should Have Ended cartoon parody - screencap

If you’re unfamiliar with HISHE, a.k.a How It Should Have Ended, then bid the rest of your day a fond farewell. HISHE is a popular YouTube channel that produces animated videos depicting how certain movies, well, should have ended. They like to take the logical outcomes that most movies ignore in their plots and follow them to a more humorous end. Their latest subject: Fast and Furious 6.

Available to watch below, the HISHE take on FF6 is the first time this talented team of animators has taken on driving scenes, and while the animation’s level of quality and complexity is purposely on par with something like South Park, we think they lampooned the movie’s biggest plot holes perfectly. World’s longest runway? Check. A bunch of cars versus a tank? Check. Indestructible Dom? Check. They even joke about the backwards timeline, where FF6 technically takes place before the franchise’s third film, Tokyo Drift.

And just to make sure you’re an HISHE fan for life, be sure to check out any of their videos on superhero movies, particularly Batman, and the Super Cafe. Speaking of which, the next movie getting the HISHE treatment is this summer’s blockbuster Man of Steel.

Video: Jaguar releases C-X75 concept build story

Jaguar C-X75 Concept Story - video screencap

If you want to know what was going through the minds of decisionmakers at Jaguar when the company decided to build the batty C-X75 Concept, look no further than the quick video after the jump. Jaguar set about building a car with the performance of a Bugatti Veyron, the electric range of a Chevrolet Volt and the emissions of a Toyota Prius, and they turned to a legendary engineering firm to help make it happen. Williams, the same crew behind Williams F1, helped Jaguar stitch the concept car together, and the result is unlike anything we’ve seen before.

The twin-charged 1.6-liter four-cylinder mounted amidship is paired with an electric motor at each wheel for a combined output of over 850 horsepower. And, since the whole chassis is hewn from carbon fiber, a production version would’ve been light enough to give machines like the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari a run for their money. Shame they apparently couldn’t make the business case work. Watch the concept build story in the video below for yourself.

Video: Ron Howard’s Rush gets new featurette

Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Celebrities, Racing, TV/Movies

Ron Howard's Rush

As you’re likely aware by now, the classic 1976 Formula 1 season is being immortalized courtesy of the movie Rush, showcasing the rivalry between the British James Hunt, driving for McLaren, and the Austrian Niki Lauda, driving for Ferrari. In the film, the fun-loving Hunt is played by Chris Hemsworth and the super-serious Lauda by Daniel Brühl.

Both of the actors can be seen front and center in the video below, a featurette on the upcoming film, with commentary from director Ron Howard. You’ll see some of the racing action from the movie, a few shots of Brühl playing Lauda before and after his terrible accident and a sense of why Howard was so drawn to document this particular racing season.

Scroll down below to watch the video.

Video: XCAR loves the Morgan Aero Coupe and so do we

XCAR Morgan Aero Coupe parked on street - front three-quarter view - video screencap

If you listen to the accountants of the world, the Morgan Aero Coupe simply shouldn’t exist. With a production run of around 100 units, this car is the very definition of boutique. It reeks of nonsensical transportation. It isn’t the fastest. It doesn’t handle the best. It isn’t even the most luxurious. As such, there simply isn’t a business case for the car on paper. Count us among the thankful that human desire has nothing to do logic. XCAR recently took the time to get personal with the Aero Coupe by exercising the machine through downtown London at night. The result is some beautiful videography of what Morgan calls “automotive theater.”

It’s a damn fine way to spend six and a half minutes of your day. You can watch the clip below for yourself to see what we mean. Just don’t blame us if you start looking at your daily ride with a more jaundiced eye.

Video: Ford Fiesta ST in startling track battle against Toyota GT86

Ford Fiesta ST versus Toyota GT86 by Evo - video screencap

On the surface, there’s very little that the Ford Fiesta ST and Toyota GT86 (or the Scion FR-S that is sold in the US, or the largely similar Subaru BRZ) share in common. One is a hatchback with power coming from a turbocharged engine routed to the front wheels. The other is a coupe with power coming from a naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine routed to the rear wheels.

Thing is, both of them are reasonably priced performance cars aimed at a similar segment of the automotive marketplace, so a comparison isn’t out of the question. It is with all of this in mind that we direct you to the video below, in which the blokes from Evo pit the two manic little machines against one another on a race track. The result? Well, it can be summed up this way: Fast versus fun.

See how the track battle goes down in the video below.
