Closer to the Edge trailer at the Isle of Man

Regardless of where you stand on the two wheels versus four debate, chances are that you respect the Isle of Man TT. The race is a living relic of motorsport that can trace its roots all the way back to 1907, and while most other racing venues have seen their essence diluted by ever evolving technology, regulations and commercialization, the Isle of Man continues to be an event dominated by one pursuit above all else: go faster. The course is a twisting loop of public roads that snake through open country side and dense village centers, meaning that nearly any mistake translates into immediate disaster.

Guy Martin has famously podiumed at the race eight times now but has yet to take top honors. Closer to the Edge, a new documentary, has been worked up to take a look inside both Martin’s two-wheeled exploits and what makes the Isle of Man TT so special. The film is set to be released on April 22nd, but in the meantime, we highly suggest you hit the jump to check out the trailer.

BMW tests its vehicles in the heat of Death Valley – Click above to watch video after the jump

BMW runs its vehicles through some extreme environments, and it’s all in the name of research. One of its (and nearly every other automaker’s) favorite stomping grounds is, quite literally, a hot spot. Death Valley, California is one of the hottest places on the planet, and the German automaker comes here to subject its vehicles to temperatures that can exceed 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

This year, the BMW team has decided to capture their efforts on video. In the process, it seems they’ve also beat U.S.-based spy photographers to the punch by showing glimpses of what appears to be a 2012 3 Series wearing blacked-out camouflage. Click past the jump to see BMW’s newest development cars out testing in the scorching heat.

2011 Chevrolet Volt

2011 Chevrolet Volt at Mazda Raceway – Click above to watch video after the jump

There are plenty of adjectives in the English language we could use to accurately describe the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. Innovative, clever and efficient all readily leap to mind, but sporty doesn’t quite make the top of the list. That didn’t stop the crew from TheFutureIsElectric.com from taking the new wonder child from General Motors to Laguna Seca for a couple of quasi-quick laps around the world-famous track. Fortunately for all of us buzzing around the Internets, the crew captured the whole shebang via the glory of high-definition video.

With nothing but the sound of some wind buffeting and the tortured screams of the low-rolling resistance Goodyear Assurance tires, the Volt is more or less capable of keeping pace on the hallowed tarmac. It’s far from able to match speed with hardware from Porsche or Lotus, but we’re guessing that’s beyond the point all together. Hit the jump to see the action for yourself.

Ferrari FF Crash

Ferrari FF crash – Click above to watch video after the jump

This is why we can’t have nice things, CAR Magazine. Ferrari recently hosted a passel of journalists from around the globe in Italy to fully introduce the company’s new FF to the world. You know, the sexy-as-sin shooting brake with a European price tag of £230,000? Yeah, that Ferrari FF.

Jethro Bovingdon showed up to represent the CAR crowd, but ran into a bit of trouble while trying to work up a video monologue and pilot the obscenely expensive Italian supercar through some narrow country roadwork at the same time.

Shortly after announcing that he intended to demonstrate “just how committed to the throttle you can be on a very twisty narrow road that shouldn’t suit this car,” Bovingdon managed to bash the FF off of a curb. According to CAR, the damage was limited to both wheels on the passenger side. We’re guessing the repairs likely cost more than the tester’s fancy sunglasses, but not by much.

Hit the jump to check out the in-cabin video of the incident for yourself. Thanks for the tip, Throwback!

Mazda6 destroyed by giant claw
Wanton destruction of Mazda sedans – Click above to watch the video after the jump

You know those cranes that you see at many large grocery stores? You know, the ones with the shiny, pointy claws that can’t seem to pick up a teddy bear or some fuzzy dice. They’re infuriating to use, mostly because you know you just got duped into paying fifty cents for something that you just can’t win. They have the same claws in Russia, and apparently they’re infinitely larger, more functional and far more hostile towards the Mazda6.

Beyond the jump is some video that we just can’t explain. It involves a massive, absolutely awesome crane truck grabbing onto the roofs of a pair of perfectly good-looking Mazdas and simply tossing them into an equally huge bin attached to said truck.

We have no idea why these Mazdas were taken in such a hostile manner, but we’re hoping it’s not because they were parked in a loading zone. And why is it that we can only see Mazdas in this parking lot? So many questions. So much destruction. (We’re guessing these cars were somehow damaged and destroyed for insurance purposes, but we can’t say for sure.)

Hit the jump to watch this puzzling and destructive video for yourself, if only to marvel at the skill of the crane operator. And if you speak Russian, let us know what the guys making the video are saying.

Our compatriots over at Edmunds’ Inside Line said it best: The new Lamborghini Aventador looked pretty striking sitting still upon its debut at the Geneva Motor Show this year, but a Raging Bull like this one shouldn’t be sitting still. It needs to be run, and run hard.

Fortunately, our friends had the opportunity to accompany the new Lambo on a video shoot in the Californian desert to let it stretch its legs and get it good and covered in silt. Follow the jump to watch the video footage.

2012 Nissan GT-R takes on Nürburgring – Click above to watch video after the jump

Nissan loves spending time in Germany. We imagine that Nissan engineers have passports filled with German point-of-entry stamps. However, they’ve likely only spent time in one specific area: the village of Nürburg, Germany.

With the GT-R now producing an extra 45 horsepower for model year 2012, Nissan went back to the Nürburgring last October with it’s updated super coupe to see how much time it could shave off the old car’s best lap – a blistering 7m 26.7s. The result? With a new lap time of 7:24.22, how does a hair quicker than the Maserati MC12 sound?

That time doesn’t just place the 2012 Nissan GT-R ahead of the Maserati. Other cars with slower times include the Pagani Zonda F Clubsport, Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT and a host of other expensive, hard-to-pronounce exotic machines, at least according to Wikipedia. Since there is no official governing body that records Nürburgring lap times for production cars, it’s hard to say which ones really do have the lowest lap times. From what we can tell, the Dodge Viper ACR and Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 are still quicker than the 2012 GT-R.

Follow the jump to watch the run for yourself, which we just found on YouTube for the first time today, but note that the driving action begins around the 3:09 mark.

Corvette ZR1 video
Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 ad spot – Click above to watch the video after the jump

We’ve seen plenty of luxury sports cars that are later tuned for the 12 Hours of Sebring. Porsche, Ferrari and BMW all do it, and so does General Motors with its Corvette Racing team. So why do the advertising types at GM feel it necessary to talk up their car at the expense of the aforementioned makes by way of this 30-second commercial? GM has earned bragging rights because, unlike the other cars, the stock ZR1 actually had to be de-tuned by 168 horsepower in order to qualify.

Unfortunately for Chevrolet and its racing team, the race cars could have used a few of those ponies, as BMW took first and second, while The General had to settle for third place. Still, the spot serves as a reminder of just how ridiculous it is that the ZR1 comes fresh from the factory with 638 horsepower and a whole world of whoop-ass. Hit the jump to watch the commercial for yourself.

Mercedes-Benz showed off the 2011 SLS AMG GT3 at this year’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, giving the well-heeled a first look at Benz’s latest big boy toy. Ever the gracious blue-bloods, Merc made a high-def video detailing the car for us peons who couldn’t make the show.

For the GT3 SLS, Mercedes took a break from its usual conservatism and got all liberal with the carbon fiber, crafting the seat, safety cell, much of the bodywork and the splitter, diffuser and rear wing out of the black stuff.

The car also gets an air jack system and 19-inch centerlock wheels to help make it GT3 competitive. The best part of the video, though, is the sound of the SLS GT3’s raucous, 563-horsepower V8 barking through unsilenced side pipes. Click past the jump to check it out.
