Motorstorm Apocalypse

Motorstorm Apocalypse – Click above to watch video after the jump

If Gran Turismo 5 has turned a bit stale for you, never fear. The crew behind the Motorstorm franchise has just what you need to wet your racing videogame whistle in the form of the new Motorstorm Apocalypse. The game takes all of the fender-bashing glory of the classics into a city in the throes of collapse. Players will not only have to contend with the other racers, but they’ll have to square off against an environment that’s hell-bent on destruction as well. It’s like Mad Max on steroids.

Programmers have thrown in a heap of new vehicle classes on top of old favorites, and the single-player campaign brings a new level of story-telling to the party for the first time. Additionally, new online multiplayer content allows you to collect experience points to build your favorite racing machine, collect medals to show off and to unlock new vehicle perks to help you gain an edge over the rest of the field.

Sign us up.

You can check out a full trailer for the game after the jump as well as a few developer journals that take a closer look at both the multiplayer and the single player action. We think you won’t be disappointed.

Car enthusiast suspension videos

Dragster suspension in action – Click above to watch the video after the break

Last week we showed you what the suspension under a Mazda Miata looks like while carving up an autocross course. Today, we bring you a look at what your suspension is up to on a straight-and-narrow dragstrip launch.

This video will again test your car-enthusiast mettle. Do you care enough to see what your suspension is doing? If you drive on the drag strip regularly, this could be really helpful. If not, well, we hope you’re really into suspension dynamics.

You’ll notice that this shock is doing nearly all its work just after launch and then again right after passing the lights. That said, the shock is working diligently the entire time, in an attempt to keep the power pointed straight and the rear wheels where they belong.

Whereas the Miata’s suspension appeared to work quite hard in corners and then very little on straights, the dragsters mono shock set-up is in constant motion. The same, but different…

But wait, there’s more! Click past the jump for more reader-suggested suspension videos, where you can also see what goes on when tackling off-road racing from a number of angles. Enjoy! Thanks for the tip, Mike!

Real live horsepower rescues stuck semi truckl

Click above to watch the video after the jump

After thousands of years serving as the transportation of choice, the horse was unceremoniously replaced by the automobile. The fact is, cars don’t need food, water or shelter, and thanks to the automobile, a trip that used to take three days can now happen over the course of a couple hours. So the car wins, for ever and ever, right? Tell that to the driver of a massive tanker truck that slid off the road during what looks like a terrific snow storm.

Hit the jump to watch what could be an Amish man and his pack of powerful Clydesdales pull a shining example of modern machinery out of the ditch. If you click through quickly we’ll refrain from boring you with a plethora of lame “horsepower” puns or quips about 16-leg-drive beating all-wheel-drive any day of the week. Don’t make us count to three. Still here? Fine: turns out all the horse power you really need can be counted on just one hand.

Translogic drives the Z-Kart

Translogic tours the neighborhood on the all-electric Z-Kart – Click above to watch video

What’s the best way to get your motoring kicks for less while consuming zero fuel and emitting only adrenaline? Riding a Zero motorcycle sounds like a lot of fun, until you get to that part about it only having two wheels. A golf cart is only amusing when it’s gas-powered and you’ve stuck a tee in the governor. The answer lies somewhere in between, and George Fortin from San Clemente, California, has put together his own version of the solution.

Our friends at Translogic paid Fortin a visit because he’s the proud owner and creator of the Z-Kart. It’s an all-electric go-kart that rides on a quartet of motorcycle tires and is powered by a DC motor and four lead-acid batteries. The frame is built from recycled polyethylene, and Fortin built it himself from scratch. Total charge time for the Z-Kart is just three hours from a 110v outlet.

According to Fortin, the Z-Kart is capable of exceeding 50 miles per hour. However, he changed the gearing to bring it back down to a more-reasonable 40 mph. The differential in the Z-Kart was taken from a small off-road buggy, and the engine feeds juice to the wheels via a chain drive and jack shaft.

Translogic’s Bradley Hasemeyer chats with George about his creation before taking the Z-Kart out for a spin. Check out the electric action in the video after the jump.

BMW M5 teaser in the snow

BMW M5 teaser video – Click above to watch video after the jump

After the quick teaser clip BMW unveiled for the next-generation M5, we’ve been itching to get a better look at the machine. Fortunately for Bimmer-addicts everywhere, the automaker has been so kind as to serve up a lengthier video of the new menace frolicking through the snow. BMW President Kay Segler is even on hand to introduce the super sedan, as well as his company’s new initiative to get fans of his brand to submit their M5-inspired stories. We gather that the tales will be collected for a marketing stunt when the vehicle gets an official unveil.

As you may recall, word has it that BMW has parted ways with the luscious V10 of old in favor of a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that kicks out a raucous 560 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque. All of that muscle gets dumped on the rear wheels.

Rumors have dusted up that the big 10-pot isn’t the only bit of tech to get left behind with the new generation change. Buyers may not be able to get their hands on a manual transmission with the new M5 debuts, either. Hit the jump to check out the clip.

Video: Hoax or No? Drifter with a deathwish makes fool out of police

Fast and Furious 6: Mayhem in Malaysia – Click above to watch video after the jump

Unless this is footage from Zoolander 2: Blue Steel Drift Assassin, this drifter has a serious issue with the local authorities. We have to believe this is some kind of stunt rather than footage of someone actually driving fast and then furiously. Call us skeptical, but the placement of the cameraman is a bit too convenient, the road is a little too empty and the cop’s guns remain holstered.

Click past the jump to watch the clip (judging by the banner over the bridge, it looks like it was shot in Malaysia), then render your verdict in the comments. Hat tip to Semjon!

2012 BMW M5 teaser – Click above to watch the video

The F10 BMW M5 is nigh upon us, and to make sure we’re excited, BMW has released a tantalizingly short and non-descript video of the M car in action. As with most BMW M teaser videos, there’s not much to see, other than some headlights at high-speed, so the vocals are probably the most important thing.

While we’ve seen plenty of spy shots of the next big M car, this is the first official video BMW has produced. By the look and sound of things, the car’s 578-hp twin-turbo V8 might just be worth the hype. Hit the jump for the video.

Video: Walter Röhrl spins a million-dollar Porsche 904… with us inside

Walter Rohrl spins a Porsche 904

Walter Röhrl spins a Porsche 904 – Click above to watch video

We’re currently bombing around Mallorca, Spain on the launch of the Porsche Cayman R, and to make up for the massive monsoon that’s coated the roads and nearly made a glorified go-kart track undrivable, our gracious hosts from Stuttgart brought out a legend. Actually, two of them.

None other than Walter Röhrl was flown in to show us “professionals” how a proper racing driver does it, and in between laps in the hotter, lightweight Cayman, the German racing legend took us for spin in something far more exotic.

According to Porsche, if there’s a vintage, racing equivalent of the Cayman R, it’s the historic Porsche 904, and this 911-powered 1965 example is one of only 20 ever made and came right from the personal garage of one of Ferdinand Porsche’s progeny. This particularly immaculate 904 is probably worth over $1 million, but that didn’t matter to Röhrl, who flung the featherweight (and seatbelt-less) coupe around the track with the kind of sideways fervor we’d expect from a World Rally Champion. Oh, and when we said “spin” we meant it. Follow the jump for the in-car footage, and excuse our incessant cackling – we’re still trying to pry the grin off our face.

Chris Bangle and Jason Castriota discuss Saab PhoeniX – Click above to watch video after the jump

In the left corner, from Wausau, Wisconsin, we have Christopher “Flames are Surfacing” Bangle. In the right, from the mean streets of Greenwich, Connecticut, stands Jason “Let Me Out of My Birdcage” Castriota. Alright, gentleman… we know you are both highly accomplished automotive designers, but we want to keep this thing clean. Gloves up, and come out swinging!

The controversial former BMW head and new Saab stylist were caught chatting about the Swedish automaker’s new PhoeniX Concept on the Geneva Motor Show floor by CarDesignNews. Known for being an instigator, Bangle questions Castriota about what makes the swoopy coupe a Saab. The ensuing “conversation” is filled with awkward fake-smiles and restraint. Click past the jump to see the footage along with a separate video walkaround of the concept by Castriota himself.

Video: VW Darth Vader Super Bowl ad gets the Toyota spoof treatment

Darth Vader Commercial Spoof Toyota

Click above to watch the video after the jump

Volkswagen’s Darth Vader Super Bowl ad has all the trimmings of an all-time classic. It involves kids and the most famous Star Wars character of all time. Who doesn’t love kids and Star Wars? And, perhaps most importantly, the big game spot was hugely funny. Beyond that, from the moment we first laid eyes on the ad we were certain that this clever spot would spawn a raft of Vader spoofs. We haven’t been disappointed.

Beyond the jump is the latest Vader spoof. This time, the mini Jedi trades in his 2011 Passat for a previous-generation Toyota Corolla. But while the original spot was fun and playful, this spoof takes a turn for the Dark Side. Junior Vader chokes his mom, throws his dad and even uses his Jedi mind to lift the toilet seat. But in the end, the edgier Vader meets a force more powerful than the Dark Side. Hit the jump to watch the Violent Broccoli creation – the ending is a bit predictable, but it’s still worth checking out. Thanks to all for the tips!
