1900 Porsche Semper Vivus hybrid

Porsche Semper Vivus hybrid – Click above to watch the video after the break

Think the Toyota Prius was the first hybrid automobile ever made? Think again. Honda Insight? Keep guessing. In reality, the world’s first hybrid was designed and built by none other than Ferdinand Porsche, founding father of the present-day Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart. That’s right, the same brain that brought us such ingenious machinery as the Volkswagen Beetle and the glorious Auto Union racers built the world’s first fully functional hybrid automobile.

Now that the modern-day Porsche brain-trust is once again showing interest in hybrid technology, the German company has decided to bring back the 1900 Semper Vivus, which literally means always alive. Although the technology behind hybrids has come a long way – Porsche’s first hybrid used about 4,000 pounds of lead acid batteries and could barely climb any kind of grade – the basic principles are actually much the same.

To wit, just like that original Semper Vivus, Porsche’s latest hybrid, the 2012 Panamera S Hybrid, features an engine (in this case a supercharged V6 putting out 333 horsepower), an electric motor (which adds another 47 horses) and a battery pack. All the major bits and pieces are the same, except with massive improvements in power and efficiency.

In celebration of 111 years of hybrid automobiles, Porsche spent the past four years recreating the Semper Vivus, and it will show off the fruits of its labor at the rapidly approaching 2011 Geneva Motor Show. In an effort to whet our appetites, the automaker has released a teaser video that you can see for yourself after the break, along with the requisite press release.

Hennessey V650 Wagon vs. Porsche 911 Turbo – Click above to watch video after the jump

While the Nürburgring circuit seems to be today’s venue of choice for sports car bragging rights, the drag strip remains king when it comes to acceleration contests. With that in mind, the folks over at Hennessey Performance have released a video of their latest hopped-up Cadillac V650 Wagon taking on Porsche’s venerable 911 Turbo. As expected, the 650-horsepower “Family Station Wagon” nudges the lighter 480-horsepower “Germany’s Finest” coupe for the win.

Wait a second.

The video clearly states the Porsche has a “Tiptronic” transmission. This means it is an older, pre-2010 model (note the lack of LED brake lights) that’s missing the current lightning-fast dual-clutch PDK gearbox and standard limited-slip rear end. We don’t know for sure, but it could even be an aged 2006 model. Thanks to launch control, today’s standard 500-horsepower 997 Turbo does 0-60 in less than three seconds… easily. It is also disclosed that the V650 is riding on drag radials – a big advantage over street compounds on a well-used strip.

Nobody’s downplaying the ferociousness of the blown wagon, and we welcome this type of challenge, but let’s be sure to choose our words more carefully and keep the contestants in the same era. Follow the jump to watch the video.

ice drifting

Drifting on ice causes facial distortion in some passengers – Click above to watch video after the jump

Drifting on ice sounds a lot more exciting than Disney on Ice. At least to us, anyway.

A back-seat full of Japanese comedians may beg to differ after going for a sideways slide in the back seat of an older Mitsubishi Evo. There really isn’t much for us to add to this clip because… well, we don’t really know what’s going on. We do know that the action is fast and furious while the comedians’ expressions are of shock and sickness. Click past the jump and see the sideways-drama unfold for yourself.

Oh, and can we just say how crazy and insane – and undeniably entertaining – Japanese game shows tend to be?

Video: How not to wash your Mercedes-Benz

mercedes-benz at car wash with trunk open

Mercedes-Benz owner quickly cleans the trunk – Click above to watch video after the jump

Automated car washes are designed to turn an easy task into a simple one. Insert coins, wait for the machine to do its thing and then drive away in your clean car. Sounds easy, right? What if you’re the nervous type that just has to fidget, and you also happen to own a Mercedes-Benz?

The Benz has lots of buttons, any one of which is capable of grabbing your nervous attention and asking to be pushed. But if you’re going to accidentally hit any button while in the car wash, make sure it isn’t the trunk. (Okay, sunroof would be pretty bad, too.)

There is a remarkable absence of shakiness in this video, since we imagine that a ton of laughter spewed forth from the mouth of the camera holder. Give in to your urges and click past the jump to view the clip.

Mark Webber and the Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Mark Webber throws around his Porsche 911 GT2 RS – Click above to watch video after the jump

Mark Webber, or Webbah as we like to pretend he prefers, is an accomplished racing driver with a handful of wins and podium appearances at the very top of the mororsports plateau. It’s safe to say that he knows how to drive a car, and he understands what he wants out of his road cars. His chariot of choice? The Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

We don’t really need to explain why a racecar driver would choose a 620-horsepower track-ready street assassin. However, Porsche felt like having Webber discuss the car and it did so with the cameras rolling. Click past the jump to hear Mark Webber talk about the car and watch him toss it (and some speechless passengers) around Silverstone.

GM Inside the Vault

Jill Wagner on Inside the Vault – Click above to watch video after the jump

The first few episodes of Inside the Vault, the new General Motors marketing vehicle, have officially hit the airwaves. The clips feature some familiar faces from around the automotive sphere, including that of the lovely Jill Wagner, the former face of Mercury. Motor Trend Editor Angus MacKenzie and comedian Alonzo Bodden also stop by to lend host Chris Collinsworth a hand as GM looks into what makes a great guy road trip. Needless to say, the chariot of choice is a Cadillac CTS Coupe during one of the segments, but surprisingly enough, the video series doesn’t seem hell-bent on beating you over the head with the fact that the whole program is designed to shill GM vehicles. They’re even mostly entertaining.

The on-air personalities don’t seem stilted or overly scripted and Bodden helps throw in some needed levity. We have to feel a little pang of sympathy for Wagner, though. As the sole female on the cast, she’s left to defend womankind against the tide of machismo as the ambassador of her sex.

Hit the jump to check out the clips for yourself, and head over to Inside The Vault to see more episodes.

Video: Nelly shows off Ford Explorer audio system, commercial director adds unnecessary zazz

Nelly and the 2011 Ford Explorer

Nelly disapproves of back-up dancers and falling snow – Click above to watch video after the jump

The audio system in the 2011 Ford Explorer was created by Sony and features Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Technology being pumped through 12 speakers, including a subwoofer. The crisp-sounding system can pick up HD Radio channels and tag songs so you can buy them later with iTunes. Ford tapped multiple Grammy Award-winner Nelly to discuss the virtues of this setup.

Ford also got a hold of a director that thinks Nelly and the 2011 Ford Explorer are not enough to make a stand-out commercial. He decides to add some pizazz, and Nelly feels it’s not needed. The premise sounds iffy but the results are surprisingly hilarious. Check out the clip for yourself by clicking past the jump. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to go brush up on our Country Grammar…

red bull rb7 comes to life

How to build a Red Bull RB7 – Click above to watch video after the jump

The Red Bull RB7 Formula One racecar is a screaming, rubber-footed example of why paying attention in math and science class can lead to a fun career. It’s a carbon-fiber and aluminum rocketship propelled by a Renault V8 that’s limited to 18,000 rpm. Designing and building the RB7 is a complicated matter, and the crew at Red Bull has prepared a film that explains the process.

Instead of taking the overly technical route, the Red Bull boys have gone a bit “old-tyme.” Their film manages to be entertaining and interesting, which is usually a hard task to accomplish with something like this. Click past the jump to watch a Red Bull RB7 come to life using the technology of tomorrow… today!

Ford Taurus Wagon snow plow

2000 Ford Taurus Wagon snow plow – Click above to watch the video after the break

Some may call it lazy; we call it resourceful. Tired of shoveling snow and apparently unable (or unwilling) to purchase a truck-mounted plow or walk-behind snow blower, Jeff Schneider of Minnesota did the only logical thing he could: mount a blade to the back bumper of his Ford Taurus Wagon. Ingenuity – It’s the American way, no?

It seems that the little modification did the trick… mostly. In heavy, wet snow, the two-wheel drive (we’d say front-wheel drive, but it is backwards, after all) Taurus just can’t generate the kind of traction needed to push a few hundred pounds of the fluffy white stuff any real distance. But if the snow is the soft and powdery stuff, well, look out, snow plows.

See Schneider’s ingenious solution to the Minnesota winter in the video after the break.
