Tractor pull explosion

Tractor pull explosion – Click above to watch video after the jump

As tenants of the information superhighway’s underpass, we feast on a daily ration of bizarre automotive videos. That diet has put us in contact with some of the most heinous clips of mechanical destruction ever seen by human eyes. But today, we bring you something that completely redefines the notion of catastrophic failure.

The guys at Bang Shift managed to unearth a clip of tractor pull featuring one incredibly powerful machine by the name of Never Satisfied. Power supposedly came from an International DT466 diesel engine modified to suck down alcohol and force-fed over 200 pounds (!) of boost from four superchargers.

Now, we wouldn’t dare call ourselves mechanical experts, but judging from the considerable carnage in the video after the jump, those levels of pressure may have been a little much. After the nose of the tractor erupts into an impressive ball of flame, the entire top half of the engine is launched into sub-orbit. It eventually returns from atmosphere and plunks down into the dirt next to the driver. If you look close, you can still the coffee-can sized pistons laid over on the frame.

Messy.

Hit the jump to see devastation for yourself. Thanks for the tip, Aaron!

Ferrari FF unveil video

Ferrari FF unveil video – Click above to watch video after the jump

Ferrari has dropped the introduction video for the company’s new FF onto the YouTubes and the short flick shows off the extensive testing that the four-seater underwent on its way toward becoming a full-fledged production model. Engineers flogged prototypes of the FF in nearly every corner of the globe, from dirt roads and frozen paths in Argentina to tracks in France and Italy. The Prancing Horse even spent some time in Sweden to iron out any kinks that might arise during severe cold weather. The result of all that abuse is the company’s first four-wheel drive, V12, four-seat sports car.

Ferrari says that its 4RM part-time all-wheel drive system is lighter than standard units, helping give the FF its 47:53 weight balance. Speaking of weight, the newest horse in the Ferrari stable weighs in at less than 4,000 pounds and packs a start/stop system help conserve fuel. Somehow we’re guessing that fuel consumption isn’t on the top of your priority list if you’re itching to park one of these things in the garage. Hit the jump to see the full video.

Wherever You Want to Go documentary – Click above to watch video after the jump

We’ve spent lifetimes obsessing over the next stage in the human transportation saga. Constantly unsatisfied with the humble car, we’ve looked ever onward toward rocket ships, jet packs and personal flying contraptions of varying design to take care of ferrying us to work in greater comfort and speed than ever before imagined. BMW seems to be willing to wade into that universe with its new four-part documentary on the future of mobility called Wherever You Want to Go. The film delves into the various forms of what we think of as futuristic transportation by speaking with everyone from Buzz Aldrin to Syd Meade, Robin Chase and Marissa Mayer.

If you’re thinking this all sounds like an automaker rallying the troops against the internal combustion engine, don’t be so sure. The short trailer for the film features a ride in a Superbird clone, so it can’t be all bad. Hit the jump to soak up the trailer. BMW will release the films on February 1, 8, 15 and 22nd, so stay tuned.

Ariel Atom V8 Top Gear

James May rocks the Ariel Atom V8 – Click above to watch the video after the jump

The latest Ariel Atom sports 500 horsepower from its supercharged 3.0-liter V8, yet it only weighs 1,200 pounds. That adds up to about 900 horsepower per ton; a ratio that shames anything from a Lotus to a Bugatti Veyron. Sounds riveting, and Top Gear‘s James May had the honor of exercising the super-fast machine in a very thorough manner.

Beyond the jump is 12 minutes of TG goodness featuring the Ariel Atom 500. Not only did May have his way with the Atom, he then put the track day superstar against a Lexus LFA and a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera in a race from zero to 100 and back to zero. The super Atom then thundered around the TG test track in a one-on-one battle against the BMW S1000 RR, and of course, was handed over to The Stig for a proper power lap. Hit the jump to gaze upon the marriage of Top Gear and the Ariel Atom 500.

Video: Mercedes wants you to think Twitter is fuel

Mercedes-Benz engineers play with twitter car control

Mercedes-Benz engineers test out their “tweet fuel” – Click above to watch video after the jump

Automakers have taken to social media with varying degress of success. On one side, we’ve got the Ford Fiesta Movement and on the other we’ve got… nearly every other automaker’s social outreach. And now, we have Mercedes-Benz.

Four teams of two have been picked to race Dallas at Cowboys Stadium, with one team each leaving from New York, Tampa, Chicago and Los Angeles. Each team is captained by a “celebrity” well-versed in the Twitter universe – an odd combination of “coaches,” but they’ve got what Mercedes wants: 7,087,730 followers, combined.

So how does Twitter factor into the race? Each team needs to collect something Mercedes is calling “tweet fuel” and it’s based on the rather vague description of “twitter activity.”

Said “fuel” will help push the team further in their respective vehicles, with NY behind the wheel of a 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic, Tampa driving a 2011 E550 Cabriolet, Chicago getting the keys to a 2011 GL350 BlueTec and LA will use a 2011 S400 Hybrid. If they “win,” each member will receive a 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe.

One more note, Mercedes has put out a teaser of a faux Tweet-guided CL, proving once again that automakers are better at contrived stunts than viral videos. Check it out for yourself after the jump.

Kid Rock Camaro

Kid Rock receives a Camaro for his birthday – Click above to watch video after the jump

Chevrolet and NASCAR racer Jimmie Johnson teamed up to make Kid Rock’s recent birthday party one the Detroit city rocker will likely never forget. During the singer’s 40th birthday celebration concert, Johnson presented Rock a brand-new Chevrolet Camaro on behalf of the Bow Tie brand. You know, because if there’s anyone who can’t afford to buy his own car, it’s Kid Rock. Sarcasm aside, Rock seemed genuinely surprised and grateful for the gift, even going so far as to ask if he was being punked.

No, sir. That’s the rest of us.

Ironically, the birthday celebration concert that Kid threw himself was being held at Ford Field. The one-off Camaro also came with special graphics slathered over the hood, doors and back glass, as well as a personalized “BADASS” license plate. We couldn’t make this stuff up if we tried. You can hit the jump to see a video of the gift-giving for yourself.

Audi RS3 Sportback

Audi RS3 Sportback – Click above to watch video after the jump

If you live in Pittsburgh, you probably don’t need a dissertation on the evils of winter. The season is an expanse of cold darkness punctuated by spurts of insufferable weather and hamfisted drivers. Fortunately, the good people at Audi have been so kind as to provide the world with a reminder of all there is to love about the cooler months. The company has turned out another lengthy bout of footage of the delicious new RS3 Sportback as it dashes through the snow.

There’s plenty of sideways action as well as excellent car control, all shot from multiple angles. Audi even busted out a helicopter to take in the view from above. There’s over seven minutes of footage to enjoy without a whisper of music or a pesky voiceover to spoil the sound of the RS3 barking through the powder. Hit the jump to watch the full clip for yourself.

Video: Rubber is the story of a homicidal tire named Robert

Rubber movie

Quentin Dupieux’s Rubber – Click above to watch video after the jump

Rubber movieWe’ll let you all in on a little secret: when we aren’t furiously rowing away out our keyboards, snapping photos of our review vehicles or splitting knuckles on the world’s worst project vehicles, we’re stuck in front of Netflix sucking up a deluge of horrible B movies. We just can’t help ourselves. Bad acting and worse editing dipped in the sugary coating of a strange premise is the perfect concoction for shutting off your brain for awhile, which is exactly why we first got excited when we heard about director Quntin Dupieux’s new film, Rubber.

The movie centers on an old tire by the name of Robert that somehow comes to life, acquires telepathic powers and sets out on a murderous rampage. If that doesn’t sound like B-movie gold, we don’t know what does. But after watching the trailer for the flick, we can’t help but think this is a legitimate film that just happens to be slumming it alongside flicks like Death Bed – The Bed that Eats.

Even setting our questionable cinematic tastes aside, we can’t help but want to see this movie when it hits theaters on April 1. Hit the jump to check the video for yourself.
