Video: Motor Recall app makes game out of identifying vehicle lights at night

motor recall app

What will they think of next? This is an app called Motor Recall, and if you’re at all like us, it’s pretty much the equivalent of any nighttime car ride as a kid – see a pair of headlights or taillights, pick out the make, model and if you’re lucky/good, the year. Now, the clever folks at Case By Case Studios have turned that time-honored way of surviving a long drive into an app.

Loaded with over 250 different headlight and taillight patterns, players have the choice of either matching the headlights with taillights in a game called Match, or out and out guessing which vehicle is being shown, not surprisingly, called Guess. Players can score points and unlock even rarer vehicles the longer they play. Case By Case is claiming that it will continue to update with new vehicles to keep you guessing, which makes us quite excited for this new game. Could be a great time waster.

Take a look at the demo trailer below. Motor Recall is only available in the Apple App Store, but we’d expect it to arrive on other platforms in the future.

Video: Dirt track driver escapes fiery wreck, finishes fifth

Dirt Modified crash and fire video

Dirt Modified racer Mike Stofflet was running in a pre-feature heat at the Mahoning Valley Speedway in Pennsylvania, when things went quite wrong. It’s difficult to tell what happened exactly, but we’re guessing he made contact with another car, which sent him skittering up the track with his vehicle tipped on its side.

While that might be scary in and of itself, the part that had us cringing was the stream of fluid that wound its way down from the top of the screen – gasoline. It didn’t take much after flipping Stofflet’s car over for the gas to ignite, leaving the 27-year-old strapped into the flaming racer.

Miraculously, not only did he get out of the burning car uninjured, but after some pit-lane repairs, he was back out for the feature race, finishing fifth. Check out the scary footage below.

Video: How Porsche got Patrick Dempsey into the driver’s seat for Le Mans

Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Porsche, Celebrities, Humor

Patrick Dempsey changes drivers

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. Ask Patrick Dempsey and he’ll likely tell you the same secret for landing a role on a hit TV show or, for that matter, driving a Porsche in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

That’s because, like McQueen and Newman, Dempsey has earned his place in that rarified field of actors who also race. He’s competed in Baja and Grand-Am, co-owns an IndyCar team, and this year returned to Le Mans where he and his teammates Joe Foster and Patrick Long finished fourth in the GTE-Am class behind the wheel of their Porsche 911 RSR.

It’s a grueling race, and the fluid transition between drivers behind the wheel is a key element to success. Check out the satirical video below to see how Dempsey and company got ready.

Video: Toyota Tacoma helps stand up to your girlfriend, mimes, magicians and the Grim Reaper

Toyota Tacoma commercials

It takes a lot to get a product noticed in today’s fast-paced world, but one avenue that’s always seemed to grab the eyeballs of consumers has been humor. Toyota knows this rule well, and has put together a quartet of spots called “Tacoma Wins,” in which the midsize pickup’s features and specifications best a number of seemingly worthy competitors.

Whether it be sobbing girlfriends, a circus magician, a grim reaper or the scariest thing of all, a mime, the Tacoma looks well equipped to deal with it. Take a look below for all four of Toyota’s newest spots.

Video: 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC AMG is period gangsta

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury

Electric Federal 560 SEC AMG video

Lord Vader comments aside, this is a seriously mean looking Mercedes-Benz. Owned by designer Kahren Arakelyan, this 560 SEC has been breathed upon by AMG, and has had its 5.6-liter V8 bored out to a nice, even 6.0 liters (which we suppose should make it a 600 SEC AMG). The AMG treatment has turned this old SEC into a quick, menacing beast.

The video, by Electric Federal, provides a different look at the predecessor to today’s CL-Class, and what it means to Arakelyan, an Armenian that discusses growing up in his homeland, surrounded by Ladas until his dad came home in a legendary Mercedes sedan – the 450SEL 6.9. The “over-engineered” Benz was like nothing the young man had ever seen before.

Arakelyan’s passion for Mercedes was born from that experience, and came with him when he arrived in the United States. In the video, he gives a pretty thorough walk-through of his SEC, while fans of engine noise can listen to the intermittent bursts from the 6.0-liter AMG V8. Scroll down for the full video.

Video: Dax Shephard, Lamborghini Super Trofeo racer?

Dax Shepard Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America

Dax Shepard is no Paul Newman, nor even Patrick Dempsey, but he has a pretty cool gig mixed with plenty of acting and racing. While you might know him from Hollywood comedies like Employee of the Month and Hit & Run, the Michigan native now seems to be dabbling in road racing after competing in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America, and to celebrate, Lamborghini has issued a new short video introducing Shepard and kicking off its new pro-am racing series.

Like many kids of the ’70s and early ’80s, Shepard’s love of cars can be traced back to a Lamborghini Countach, and, fittingly, his first time road racing in a car happened to be in a Lamborghini – an experience he comically suggests would be like another sort of “first time” with Selma Hayek. In addition a few chuckles, the video posted below also gives us some of our first racing footage of the Super Trofeo North America’s opening weekend at Lime Rock in early July, in which Shepard grabbed a third-place finish.

Video: How this Ferrari 250 GTE became Rome’s most famous police car

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Europe, Videos, Ferrari, Police/Emergency, Luxury

We’re used to seeing fancy cars gifted to or bought by certain international police forces today, but the story of this 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE goes well beyond a gift. Because Rome’s anti-organized-crime unit, Squadra Mobile, was doing a terrific job in the early ’60s, the Italian president asked what they wanted as a token of appreciation. The answer, meant as a joke, was “A Ferrari.” The president, in all seriousness, got them two.

One was almost immediately destroyed during testing, the other remains in the care of Alberto Capelli today, whose father began attending military and government auctions just after World War II. Petrolicious visited Capelli to hear the 51-year-old tale of the most precious cop car you’re going to see for a while, and it involves outlaws, a French gangster in a Citroën, a policeman who was offered a spot on the Ferrari factory team by Enzo himself, and more. It’s a fantastic yarn, and you can watch the whole story below.

Video: 1955 Belgian GP movie tells the story of Spa

Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Europe, Videos, Ferrari, Racing

With the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix happening this weekend, Shell reminded a few guests what the Spa-Francorchamps track and Belgian countryside were like in 1955. That year the petroleum company made a 30-minute movie about the grand prix – this is back when the track was called the Francorchamps National Circuit, near the town of Spa, and a list of its important corners didn’t include a mention of Eau Rouge – where it was doing the same thing it still does today: working on fuels and lubricants via its technical partnership with Ferrari.

To create the mood, journalists were invited to a vintage cinema where they mingled with Ferrari F1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa and other extras in period fifties gear, and watched a screening of 1955 Belgian Grand Prix. You can scroll down for a screening of your own, as well as the press release, minus the petits-fours and pinups.

Video: Rage Comet R is a supercar for the road, dirt and sky

Filed under: Performance, Videos, UK, Specialty, Off-Road, Racing

The Rage Comet R can be driven on the road or off-road.

In a perfect world, every vehicle would do everything well. In reality, the Ford SVT Raptor will tear up desert landscapes like no other production truck, but it will also struggle to grip the tarmac at a racetrack. In the same vein, it would be foolish to take a Porsche 911 GT3 dune jumping. The folks at Rage beg to differ and made a vehicle that they claim is as good on a racetrack as it is off-road: the Comet R (R200RT).

XCAR recently drove the Comet R to see if it really is the dual-nature beast Rage claims it is, and it didn’t disappoint. First off, it’s fast. The Comet R has the 200-horsepower, four-cylinder motor from the Kawasaki ZZR1400 motorcycle; it accelerates from 0-60 miles per hour in about 3.5 seconds, according to XCAR. Looking more like an off-road buggy than anything else, the Comet R isn’t an exercise in design, but purely in function. That is, it functions amazingly well sideways at a racetrack, and perhaps even better in an off-road environment. Just slip on some off-road wheels and tires and make some suspension adjustments, and it’ll tackle unforgiving terrain and take jumps with the ferocity of a Trophy Truck. In the UK, at least, it is also road legal, so it can be driven to and from track days without having to be towed.

See for yourself how the Comet R handles all types of terrain in the video we included below.

Video: How to make your car’s engine look showroom fresh

Last time we saw Larry Kosilla of Ammo NYC and the YouTube show Drive Clean, he was initiating the resurrection of a 1966 Porsche 912. Going beyond the body, the automotive world’s Mr. Clean next lays his gloved hands and brushes on the engine bay, demonstrating how to scour the powerplants of a front-engined Corvette Z06, a mid-engined Ferrari 458 Italia and a mid-engined Ford GT. The three cars were chosen to show the challenges of a modern, plastic-covered motor, an exotic motor with lots of hard-to-reach spots and a “muscle” car that leaves everything exposed.

Kosilla breaks it all down quickly, taking about seven minutes to go through eight steps that will get your engine from dirty to disinfected. For another engaging lesson, have a watch of the video below.
