Google Street View video

Racing across the country via Google Street View – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Driving across the United States is no simple task. As our own editors John Neff and Damon Lavrinc recently found out, it takes a few days, a lot of planning and plenty of Red Bull to successfully motor across the good ol’ U-S-of-A. However, our tech-savvy culture now allows us to virtually experience the open road through the magic of Google Street View, and two men took it upon themselves to see if you could “drive” from California to New York only using Google’s street-mapping software.

It took 90 hours and 104,619 mouse clicks, but these two gents successfully piloted their way across the United States (San Francisco to New York) all through the magic of the internet. Some 2,958 miles were covered in this webtastic task, and you can check out a full recap of the events in the video, after the jump.

Russ Swift drives MINI Cooper

Russ Swift and MINI combat boredom – Click above to watch video after the jump

The Mini Cooper is a fun little car that we’ve often praised for its go-kart-like handling. Put one in the capable hands of Russ Swift and it becomes a whole lot more than that. Swift and Mini teamed up for a video to declare that the Cooper is the arch enemy of boredom. For those who are not aware of Mr. Swift’s driving skill, he is the man who holds the record for tightest parallel park, fastest J-Turn and fastest donuts. Saying that Russ Swift can control a car is an understatement.

In this video clip, Swift shows off his parallel parking skills, puts a Mini up on two wheels and pulls off other examples of automotive shenanigans. This video is only one minute long, so you have no excuse for not clicking past the jump and give it a look.

Revenge of the Electric Car movie trailer – Click above to watch video after the jump

It looks like at least 10,000 people want to see the preview for the new Revenge of the Electric Car movie. That was the number of “likes” the film’s producers set for the RotEC Facebook page, and now that the number has been hit, we have our first preview of what movie-going audiences will learn about when the flick hits the screen in the spring of 2011. The production team sent AutoblogGreen the following message just before the 10,000th fan clicked “like.”

Everyone on the “Revenge” team is incredibly thankful for all our wonderful fans who have spread the word to help us reach our 10,000 fan goal so quickly – we’re almost there! It also reminds us of how important people feel the electric car is to them. The fact that so many people want to see this film and spread the word proves how important it is for everyone to learn about electric vehicles as an alternative to gasoline-powered cars and to be informed about new developments in EV production and what kind of options there are out there for consumers ready to shift into an electric gear.

Enough talk, check out the clip after the jump.

Wrong Way Chinese Taxi with Kelly Hu

Chinese Taxi Driver prefers alternate route – Click above to watch video after the jump

If you miss an exit on the highway, the best thing to do is simply wait for the next one and double back. You will eventually get where you are going and the only down side is a few wasted minutes. In China, at least one taxi driver prefers a more efficient way to get to his intended destination… the U-turn. Apparently, the freeways of Tianjin are the Wild West of aggressive driving.

An excited American records footage from the back seat of this potential crash-cab. It should be noted that the female voice on the video is apparently none other than actress Kelly Hu, which means this could have quickly gone from horrible accident to tragedy faster than you can say Hawaii 5-O(h) no!

Make an illegal u-turn across the jump to view the clip.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Transformers: Dark of the Moon trailer – Click above to watch video after the jump

We’ve already seen plenty of action on the set of the third installment in the Transformers. Unplanned accidents and injured cast members seemed to dominate the news, but now the film is heading into post-production and we can get a glimpse at what type of action to expect on the big screen. The first trailer has been released for Transformers: Dark of the Moon and we can honestly say the teaser does a good job at raising our excitement level for the new film… even though we know it’s going to suck as bad as the last two.

The trailer shows the 1969 Moon landing in glorious HD, but also reveals a secret motive behind the mission. We won’t spoil it for you, so just jump and try to figure out how this relates to cars… again.

Video: GT5 physics are completely realistic

Gran Turismo 5 snafu

Gran Turismo 5 pileup – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Gran Turismo 5 has been billed as a hyper-realistic driving simulator. And while it’s almost impossible for Polyphony Digital’s golden egg to live up to six years of hype and hope (we called the game “an incomplete title”), there are plenty of gamers out there who feel the driving dynamics are second-to-none. But no matter how hard the hundreds of GT5 developers tried, perfection and pixels are still miles apart.

For instance, what happens when you’re driving a Nissan GT-R really fast on a banked oval track, and as you begin to ease left, an equally fast Porsche 911 taps you on the driver-side door? In real life, there is a solid chance that you’d lose control and perhaps come to a stop with your wheels pointing skyward. In GT5, you can apparently lose control, land on a Lamborghini Gallardo and still finish the race. Want proof? Hit the jump to watch the replay of one gamer’s hilarious but not-so-realistic experience. At least the Lambo slowed down once it began piggybacking an extra 4,000 pounds.

Video: Translogic in Japan, Part 2

The last time we checked in with the Translogic crew, they took an in-depth look at Japan’s modding culture, with an emphasis on the odd, exotic and ill-advised. This week, Bradley gets schooled in the art of drifting with professional sideways slider Shino Murai. It’s a good novice primer on the sport in Japan and some of the in-car advice is both helpful and hilarious. Who knew the handbrake is like a woman? Hit the jump to find out what Murai means…

Top Gear Christmas Special

Top Gear Christmas Special – Click above for high-res image gallery

We know the Top Gear crew made a stop off in Israel while filming their Christmas Special, but we had a sneaking suspicion that Clarkson, Hammond and May wouldn’t be sticking to just one part of the Middle East during their journey. That suspicion was confirmed with the release of a brief teaser showing the motoring trio in the back of a cargo plane. Where did they land? Somewhere in Iraq. The Challenge: Get from there to Bethlehem and “don’t forget there are a few wars” along the way. Oh, and pick up some gold, frankincense and myrrh in your claptrap drop-tops. Hit the jump for trailer.

2012 BMW 1 Series M Coupe revealed – Click above to watch the video after the jump

BMW hasn’t done the best job of keeping its 2012 1 Series M Coupe a secret. The hot new two-door isn’t scheduled to make its public debut until the Detroit Auto Show next month, but we’ve already seen dozens of teaser images and videos. Heck, we’ve even driven a prototype.

Now, BMW has released video of the production-ready 1M with all of its swirly paper removed. Its bulgy, brash front end and wider stance certainly look the part of a serious baby brother to the M3, and while official numbers have yet to be confirmed, we’re indeed looking forward to flogging all 340-ish horsepower via a standard six-speed manual transmission.

Check out the video for yourself, after the jump, and stay tuned for the official details as they break.

Video: 2011 Ford Explorer plays in the California sand

2011 Ford Explorer playing in the dirt

Click above to watch the video after the jump

The outgoing Ford Explorer was a rear-drive-based body-on-frame SUV with a substantial thirst for fuel yet little in the way of off-road capability. The 2011 Explorer is built off a front-drive architecture, which would lead the uninformed observer to believe that dirt and rocks won’t get along with the newly redesigned CUV. But Ford has worked its magic with a clever all-wheel drive system that works in tandem with a Terrain Management System that promises a modicum of off-road capability. Without skid plates and higher ground clearance, we’re not talking hardcore rock crawling, of course, but perhaps there’s more ability here than one might otherwise expect out of a unibody three-row crossover.

Of course, it will take time to get this message across to the car-buying public, and the first effort in Ford’s educating process comes in the way of this sand-filled video. Ford put its newest 2011 model on display at the “San Diego Vision” media event, taking a bright red Limited model for a spin on very loose dirt. There are no rocks and no obtuse articulations; instead there are a bunch of different angles of the new Explorer doing dirt donuts with earth flying everywhere. It’s far from the most impressive off-road video we’ve seen, but it sure is pretty. Hit the jump to watch the video for yourself. Hat tip to Yaroukh!
