We don’t exactly know why this video was filmed, other than the fact that it’s somehow supposed to make us more interested in the Volvo S60, but we don’t really care – just because it’s cool is reason enough for us.

In any case, well-known Kiwi racer Jonny Reid, who is currently competing in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, belted himself into the driver’s seat of a brand new 2011 Volvo S60 sedan at the starting line at Hampton Downs Motorsports Park in New Zealand.

No big deal, right? Not until you consider the fact that Reid was blindfolded and going all out based solely on his knowledge of the track and the instructions from his co-driver, Earl Bamber. We can’t really say how it compares to any other times, but he ended up lapping the track in one minute and 28 seconds.

Now, it should be noted that Reid knows Hampton Downs very well. In fact, he’s a track instructor during driver training and corporate events. Still, the video is pretty darn cool, and in the end, that’s all we really care about, right? See for yourself after the break.

Video: Sabine Schmitz makes another blonde shriek in BMW M3 Frozen Gray

Sabine Schmitz and Juliet McGuire

Sabine Schmitz and Juliet McGuire in the BMW M3 Frozen Gray – Click above to watch video after the jump

There are a few tried-and-true recipes for car video success out there, but one of our favorites has to be mixing an inexperienced passenger with a skilled driver and a world-class car. The results are nearly always as predictable as they are hilarious. South Africa’s CAR Magazine recently found that out firsthand when they strapped their Juliette McGuire into the passenger seat of a Frozen Gray BMW M3 with Nürburgring queen Sabine Schmitz behind the tiller. After a brief bout with the traction control, Schmitz is able to really start wailing on the Bavarian.

The result is well worth a few moments of your day. Schmitz is the hoon for hire in CAR Magazine’s 2011 Performance Shootout, and she’s put 12 of the world’s hottest sports cars through their paces on an airstrip and around the Zwartkops raceway. That issue of CAR hits newsstands on December 20, but if you don’t have access to a South African newstand, you can catch the video of McGuire holding on for dear life in the video after the jump.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS out on the track – Click above to watch the video after the jump

It doesn’t take much to set up a video like this. After all, why wouldn’t you want to see even more footage of the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS being flogged around a track? It’s footage we can’t seem to get enough of.

There’s nothing like watching a 620-horsepower 911 doing what it does best out on a closed course, and we highly recommend that you take a five-and-a-half-minute break from whatever you’re doing to watch the video after the jump.

Jay Leno drives the Hennessey Venom GT – Click above to watch video after the jump

In his quest to get his mitts on every piece of covetable sheetmetal on the planet, Jay Leno has just had a Hennessey Venom GT in his modest little garage. With 1,200 horsepower packed into a lightweight chassis supplied by the gurus at Lotus, the machine is what our supercar dreams would be made of – if only we took LSD before bed. John Hennessey, the man behind this beast, says that the original goal for the Venom GT was to create a vehicle that made no apologies for its performance and power-to-weight ratio. As a result, don’t expect too many creature comforts to crop up in the cabin.

At around 2,700 pounds, the Venom GT provides one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any vehicle made today – production or otherwise. The biggest surprise is that even with all that power, the engine is sucking down about 18 psi of boost and runs off of pump gas. Sounds tasty to us. Hit the jump to see the late night funny man’s take onthe Venom GT.

Video: Lamborghini Gallardo vs. the other Callaway

Click above to watch the video after the jump

On a good drive Stuart Appleby can launch a golf ball at about 174 miles per hour. A Lamborghini Gallardo can approach speeds of 200 miles per hour. Golf and Italian exotics typically don’t have much in common, but like the Gallardo, the new Callaway Diablo Octane driver uses forged composite carbon to reduce weight and increase speed. So the two companies got together to pit the golfer against the pavement-pounding LP560-4 to see if Appleby can drive a golf ball 250 meters faster than the Gallardo can travel the same distance from a rolling start.

The supercar is moving fast as it crosses the start, and Appleby appears to hit the ball at almost exactly the same time. At first glance the Lambo goes full-throttle right through the finish line without any sign of the ball, but a slo-mo examination shows a truly amazing result. We have no idea how many takes it took to get this incredible finish, but it’s amazing enough to take a closer look. Or three. Check it out after the jump.

Gran Turismo 5 vs… Mario Kart 64? Click above to watch video after the jump.

GT5’s Nürburgring vs the real-life Nürburgring? Pfft. Please. The best side-by-side comparo yet involving Polyphony Digital’s Playstation 3 opus comes from the gang at G4TV, who pit the new Gran Turismo 5 karting feature against the beloved classic, Mario Kart 64. Snap judgment: One of these looks (a lot) more fun than the other. Sorry, Yamauchi-san: Miamoto’s legendary plumber wins this duel without even having to toss a single banana. Now, time to dust off that N64 in the garage…

Hit the jump to watch the video.

Matt Farah The Smoking Tire Stasis Audi R8

The Smoking Tire’s Matt Farah spends some time with the 710 hp Stasis R8 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Matt Farah gets his mitts on tons of great rides, and we’re thankful that he puts them on camera for us all to enjoy. This time around, Matt was handed the keys to Stasis’ Audi R8 Spyder. The crew at Stasis set to work on the 5.2-liter roadster, adding a supercharger, suspension upgrades, larger wheels and an exhaust that breathes a little easier. The result is a 710-horsepower ragtop rocketship. The car seems to be so much fun to drive that Farah is often reduced to uncontrollable giggles. But seriously, who can blame him? We’d likely have the same reaction.

Hop the jump to watch Matt Farah have some canyon-carving fun courtesy of the Stasis Audi R8.

Jason Plato vs David Coulthard in the Red Bull F1 simulator – Click above to watch video after the jump

The Race-Star ConverTTable is cool and all, but compared to Red Bull’s F1 racing simulator it’s just a toy. Jumping behind the Red Bull sim’s wheel are David Coulthard, whose Formula 1 resume boasts 247 starts and 13 wins, and Fifth Gear’s Jason Plato, himself a two-time British Touring Car champion. You’d expect DC to mop the floor with Plato, considering that BTTC cars are a long way from the open-wheel racers of F1. So, what happens? Hop the jump to check out the clip.

2011 Nissan Leaf assembly – Click above to watch video after the jump

Earlier this week, we rolled out a time-lapse video of the assembly of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. In that video, General Motors took us inside its Detroit-Hamtramck plant to watch its plug-in hybrid undergo a transformation from a bodyshell to a ready-to-roll vehicle. In the all-too-brief clip, GM attempted to capture the complex steps of assembling the Chevy Volt but, as many of our commenters pointed out, failed to provide a detailed look at the intricate technologies that differentiate the Volt from more conventional vehicles.

In an attempt to be as fair as possible, it’s only fitting that we also showcase the assembly of the 2011 Nissan Leaf. This video, shot inside Nissan’s plant in Oppama, Japan, captures the production of the Leaf in painstaking detail. Hit the jump to watch the Nissan Leaf as it comes together right before your eyes.
