Video: Plank + tiny wheels + V8 Supercar engine = Aussie for “skateboard”

The Aussies prepare a special skateboard for Tony Hawk – Click above to watch video after the jump

Tony Hawk will be in attendance at the Telstra 500 V8 Supercar race in Sydney next weekend, where he’ll demonstrate his undiminished skills on the Monster Vert Ramp. As part of his welcome to the Antipodes, the locals have built him a ‘skateboard’ powered by a 630-horsepower V8 Supercar engine. Unlike the race cars, with their fancy roll cages and steering wheels, Tony just gets a throttle and a panic button. We’d love to see him run the ramp with it, but we’ll settle for him going just a little faster than the guy in the video after the jump. Hat tip to Allan

For us, one of the most interesting parts of the LA Auto Show is the Design Challenge, in which automakers are invited to rack their brains, sharpen their pencils and crank out a concept that best matches a set of predetermined parameters. This year, manufacturers were challenged to come up with a concept that was stylish, engaging to drive, and easy on the environment, all wrapped in a 1,000-lb. package. Automakers from Honda to Maybach rolled out their ideas of what said vehicle should look like, and while the judges crowned both Cadillac and Smart as this year’s winners, we were intrigued by the Nissan iV.

Fortunately, Nissan has been kind enough to give us a closer look at the vehicle. The spec sheet for the iV reads like a who’s who of concept fantasy, with building materials sourced from fast-growing ivy and spider silk, plus a propulsion and steering system that makes use of clever electromagnets. While a bio-battery stores energy for your commute, the iV also makes use of a supercapacitor to recover energy that would otherwise be lost during braking. Hit the jump to take a look at a video of the concept.

Video: VW’s Fun Theory creates a speed camera lottery

VW Fun Theory

Volkswagen’s Fun Theory speed camera lottery – Click above to watch video after the jump
Volkwagen’s Fun Theory experiments have been all about proving that people will do the right thing if you make the right thing fun to do. For instance, people threw recyclables into a bin just to hear the noise it made. The latest hijinks come courtesy of Kevin Richardson, an American whose idea was selected for the next Fun Theory experiment.

This time, the challenge was to make driving the speed limit rewarding, and Richardson’s idea was a speed camera lottery. Although it doesn’t sound the least bit compelling, his idea worked. We won’t spoil the surprise here, so follow the jump to see it in action.

Rhys Millen’s Climb Attack Brazil – Click above for to watch video after the jump

Rhys Millen recently teased a video of him sliding up the slopes of Serra do Rio do Rastro, and now the tease has been expanded upon in tropical glory. It’s a three-minutes-and-change blast of sideways slithering and vulcanized clouds for which few words are needed. In fact, the only words in the entire four-minute vid are: “The course is clear.” You’ll find the accompanying smoke and fury after the jump.

Long-form Fiat 500 U.S. ad – Click above to watch video after the jump

The enthusiast hordes have been gearing up for the arrival of the Fiat 500 for some time now. At last, Fiat has prepared its ad campaign to let the more casual car fan know what’s about to hit, and the initial result feels, to us, a lot less exciting than the car itself. Think Anthony Robbins meets a Target commercial, with a little bit of a white 500 thrown in. Or just think Moby since, with no disrespect to the musician himself, his tunes have become the soundtrack to tapioca advertising.

The 1:47 spot you’ll find after the jump will supposedly be cut up to provide more TV-friendly commercial spots of various lengths. Have a look and let us know if you think the Fiat 500 is well served, or deserves more. Hat tip to Jamie

Gran Turismo 5 Ad – Click above to watch video after the jump

If you’re like us, you’ve been hiding from friends and family this holiday season by burying yourself in the loving, automotive arms of Gran Turismo 5. You also likely know that the game was well worth the seemingly endless wait. But while rubbing Jaguar E-Type fenders with the Italian metal of a Lamborghini Miura is as much fun as you’re likely to have in front of a TV, there’s just nothing quite like the real thing. With that in mind, Sony and Polyphony Digital pulled off an interesting stunt to advertise their newest creation – unleashing a hoard of exotic racers on the unsuspecting Champs Élysées in Paris, complete with genuine pit stops.

Metal like the Lamborghini Murciélago Superveloce, Audi R8 and even Nissan GT-R all spent a bit of time playing in the rain in a mock-race. There’s no word on who took the checkers, but the stunt was clearly a winner with the crowds. Hit the jump to see the video for yourself.

Video: Infiniti gets in the holiday spirit with two snowball-themed ads

Infiniti Holiday Ad

Infiniti plays in the show with two new holiday ads – Click above to watch video after the jump

Infiniti is getting into the holiday spirit, and it has two new ads that each revolve around one theme: the snowball. The two ad clips are titled “Mischievous” and “Magical,” and the slushy projectile is used in two very different ways in the ads. “Magical” takes a whimsical approach towards spreading holiday bliss, while “Mischievous” takes aim at a certain German competitor, with an all-wheel-drive Infiniti G sedan playing the role of the snowball’s co-star.

We would love to see more snowy driving action with the G, but at least the spots get us in the right frame of mind for the season. Both ad spots are available for your viewing after the jump.

Lingenfelter Camaro

Lingenfelter Camaro dips into the eights – Click above to watch video after the jump

Prepare to have your concept of the laws of physics twisted by the guys and gals at Lingenfelter. The crew have turned their attention to building one of the meanest full-interior, fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro drag cars on the planet. In order to hustle 4,075 pounds of General Motors muscle down the track, Lingenfelter has dropped in a fully built LS9 V8 with an Eaton supercharger and all the guts to match. The heads were fully ported and loaded with titanium intake valves and hollow, sodium-filled exhaust valves for the easiest breathing possible. Throw in a set of long-tube headers, a two-stage nitrous system and twin fuel pumps and you’ve got a lump good for a mind-boggling 1,243 horsepower.

Lingenfelter has unsurprisingly ditched the stock clutch in favor of an RPS triple carbon piece, and a unique 9.5-inch billet rear differential with a 4.10 gear puts power to both rear wheels.

By some miracle of driving prowess, John Ebert was able to wrestle this machine down the quarter mile in 8.99 seconds at 158 mph. Hit the jump to watch it happen.

Jeff Zwart Pikes Peak Porsche 911 GT3

Jeff Zwart shaking down his Pikes Peak Porsche 911 GT3 – Click above to watch video after the jump

There’s just something about watching a Porsche 911 play in the dirt that flips all the right switches. Seeing that iconic shape throw rooster tails of silt triggers a sort of Pavlovian response brought on by years of daydreaming over shots of the Rothman 953 slinging sand in Africa. Consider that doubly true for Jeff Zwart’s Pikes Peak-winning GT3.

Zwart has just released a video of one of his shake-down runs prior to this year’s Pikes Peak event. The course runs up some godforsaken mountain in the middle of the California wilderness, and while Zwart isn’t seen flogging the life out of the car, it’s more than clear that both he and the machine are in their element. Click past the jump to enjoy the action.

Video: What happens when 1,500-lbs of cell phones are dropped on a Camaro

Camaro vs. Cell Phones

Camaro vs. Cell Phones – Click above to watch videos after the jump

The wonders of advertising have brought us many miracles of entertainment and phenomena of pop culture over the decades. From Budweiser Frogs to ridiculously capable blenders, as a society, we’ve likely wasted away several lifetimes just watching people try to sell us the next best product. Well, pull up a chair and get ready to chalk up a few more moments. Pace Butler Office, a cell phone recycling company, wanted to get the word out about the damage that throwing away your old cell phone can wreak on the environment. For that, they needed a visual aid – the kind that only an fourth-gen Camaro and 1,500-pound pallet of busted handsets can deliver.

As you might expect, the roof of the old Bow Tie isn’t quite up to withstanding the force of all those phones dropped from above, and the damage is catastrophic. Pace Butler Office says that the Camaro was in no state to drive and that it wasn’t going back on the road in the near future. After the death-from-above stunt, an employee reportedly bought the car to use for parts later, so it’s not a complete loss.

Even so, we have to shed a tear for the videos after the jump. Click here to see for yourself.
