Lexus’ next (really) big thing – Click above to watch commercial after the jump

It’s no longer kosher for carmakers to run simulations on computers that can fit on desks, because that’s for chumps. If you don’t have gear fit for a Hollywood blockbuster or a trip to Mars, well, you’re not really serious about this whole car thing, are you?

Lexus has joined the latter camp with its new driving simulator, built to simulate crash avoidance. Inside the metal bulb is a Lexus LS460, surrounded by a 360-degree facsimile of a real driving environment. It’s their next big thing, so they say. Us? We just want to reserve it when Gran Turismo 5 finally comes out. Follow the jump to watch the spot.

2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 – Click above to watch video after the jump

The FIA GT3 European racing series is about to get a whole lot classier. Mercedes-Benz has been testing and tuning its 2011 SLS AMG GT3 and the car is now ready to claim top spot in your high-end racing trailer. Pricing for the racing version of the “standard” SLS AMG Benz is set at €397,460 (including 19 percent Value Added Tax) or a little over $550,000 USD. The SLS AMG GT3 was recently out at the EurosSpeedway Lausitz in Eastern Germany. A camera crew was on hand to capture the action, and the result is over 21 minutes of shameless automotive pornography action. The only sound is the car on the track, interspersed with the occasional pit stop.

If you’re a wealthy privateer racer, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 can be ordered directly through Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Act now, and your racecar could arrive as early as February of 2011. What are you waiting for? There are two mega press releases and footage of the SLS AMG GT3 being put through its paces, after the jump.

Fabien Coulthard Bathurst 1000 Crash

Fabien Coulthard crashes out of the Bathurst 1000 – Click above to watch video after the jump

The Australian Supercar Bathurst 1000 has grown a reputation for being an all-out slugfest between two camps: those loyal to the Holden banner and those who eat, sleep and breathe Ford blue. While the racers are knocking fenders on track, spectators are typically knocking back beers by the truckload and locking horns to defend their respective brands. In all, the event makes Daytona look like a kiddie carnival ride. This past weekend’s Bathurst got off on a scary foot with a spectacular single-car accident in the first lap.

Judging from this YouTube video, it looks like Fabien Coulthard, who started in the 21st position on the grid, blew the left rear tire on his Holden Commodore. The resulting loss of control sent the driver off track, and his touring car hit a sand trap sideways at considerable speed. The result was the kind of pirouetting explosion of sheetmetal that we haven’t seen for a good while. Thankfully, Coulthard was able to hop out of the remains of his racer and give the crowd a hearty thumbs-up. Hit the jump to see the action for yourself. Thanks to everyone for the tips.

Video: What is the sound of Audi?

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Etc., Marketing/Advertising, Technology, Videos

Audi R8 V10 all mic'd up

Audi Sound Studio – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Audi wants you to be able to identify its brand without looking, and a consistent sonic signature is key to that. In that spirit, the company has undertaken an extensive sound capture, catalog and research program to ensure that the soundwaves drifting into your ears from the commercial playing in the next room are instantly identifiable. It extends beyond advertising, too. Even the voices and microphones used to record voicemail prompts were exhaustively auditioned for just the right sonic character.
The Audi Sound Studio effort may seem quite obsessive, but at least they’ve produced a cool video filled with the tastiest in high-end audio gear. Sound geeks who like to brand-spot should be on the lookout for Neumann, API, Focusrite Reds and the deified U47. The rest of you can just watch as a uniformed team of recordists swarms all over Audi vehicles on a track and in an anechoic chamber to capture all the sounds an Audi could possibly make. Being an advertising effort, the most important sound all of this effort can lead to is the “ka-ching” of a vehicle purchase. Video posted after the jump.

Transformers 3 Bumblebee Camaro crash

Autobots, roll out… No, wait! – Click above to watch videos after the jump

You know how they say some movies are cursed? It seems that may just be the case for the folks working on Transformers 3. The movie has had its share of crashes, with a few of them being of the “unplanned” variety. The latest incident takes place in Washington D.C. and involves a certain yellow Camaro that Transformers fans know better as Bumblebee.

As a scene was being filmed, a real police vehicle was responding to a call and cut quickly across the set. The two cars collided and the police officer driving the SUV was taken to a nearby hospital, but it appears there are no serious injuries – except to the Camaro, which was covered up and taken away.

Earlier this year, production came to a screeching halt when Gabrielo Cedillo had to be rushed to the hospital. Cedillo, an extra, was driving a car when a cable from a camera vehicle broke loose, smashed through her windshield and hit her in the head. She underwent emergency surgery but her stint in the ICU is up, and her condition is improving.

A trio of videos of this latest accident can be seen after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Mark!

Video: AMS Alpha 10 claims new quarter-mile record for Nissan GT-R

AMS Alpha 10 Nissan GT-R claims a quarter-mile record – Click above to watch the video after the jump

AMS Performance has broken its own quarter-mile record in a Nissan GT-R, this time gussied up with its Alpha 10 package. The most important thing you need to know about the suite of changes is that it takes the car up to 1,100 horsepower. The details include an Alpha 10 turbo system on top of a blueprinted engine, with all that horsepower routed through an Alpha 10 transmission. Naturally, just about everything else from the turbo inlet pipes to the fuel injectors to the downpipes have been upgraded or reworked.

The result was a 9.33-second run at 153 miles per hour. That takes 0.56 seconds off AMS’ time from March of this year in its GT-R SR850 at the TX2K10 Supra & GTR Nationals. Video footage of the run (completely with overly dramatic music and buildup) is after the jump, and a few shots of the runner itself are in the gallery of images below. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Video: Clarkson teases his own take on The Italian Job

Jeremy Clarkson in V8 Ariel Atom
Click above to watch the video after the jump

Jeremy Clarkson has created a new two-disc video titled The Italian Job, where the Top Gear host goes it alone with some of the best supercars money can buy. The video will feature Jezza hooning around Imola and Fiorano in typical shouty, animated fashion – and with good reason. He’s got a range of dream cars at his disposal, including a Ferrari 458 Italia, a Pagani Zonda R, an off-roading Lamborghini Gallardo and a V-8 Ariel Atom (nevermind that it isn’t Italian). Actually, the preview alone contains more vehicles than we care to list. There’s even a helicopter to capture the action.

The goal of Clarkson’s adventure is to prep the TG host for his first-ever Classic Touring Car Race in England against 20 experienced drivers. And while the two-disc DVD (or Blu-ray) doesn’t go on sale until November 15, we’ve got a 4:36 preview with just about everything we could ask for. Hit the jump to see it for yourself, and try not to get too excited. November 15 is, after all, over a month away. Hot tip, Nick!

Lamborghini Jota at the ‘Ring – Click above to watch video after the jump

Lamborghini took its Murcielago successor (codename: Jota) to the ‘Ring instead of rolling it out at the Paris Motor Show. Looking for all the world like Sant’Agata took a Ferrari 512TR and threw a leftover Vector bodykit on it, about the only form undisturbed is the massive exhaust exit and some semblance of a greenhouse. Regardless, it sounds outstanding. Make the jump for proof.

Turn 9

Teaser reel for new web series Turn 9 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Matt Farah, longtime friend of Autoblog and host/producer of The Smoking Tire, pinged us this weekend to let us know about a new project he’s involved with: a scripted web drama called Turn 9. Basically, it’s a car-flavored variation of the Entourage formula, following the career of fictional race driver Kyle Turren and his buddies. In addition to the requisite parties, hot rides, and bikini-clad eye candy, Turn 9 is set against a backdrop of real racing series and will feature appearances by real drivers and celebrities as the story unfolds.

Farah plays lead character Turren’s crew chief (aptly named “Matt”) and is basically responsible for handling all the car-related stuff on the program. Sounds like fun, and since network TV utterly fails at car shows, we’ll be sure to check out Turn 9 when it premieres online. Hit the jump for a brief teaser reel, and if you don’t already, be sure to follow Matt’s ongoing exploits at TheSmokingTire.com as well.

2012 Ford Grand C-Max; Disappearing middle seat

2012 Ford Grand C-Max: Disappearing middle seat – Click above to watch video after the jump

We recently spent some time with the 2012 Ford Grand C-Max and came away with mixed feelings about it. It’s an excellent compact minivan, but that’s a low-volume segment and we’re unsure of how well the Grand C-Max will sell here. One particular feature we do know people will be impressed by is the disappearing middle seat found in the second row.

Ford engineers designed the Grand C-Max so that the second-row middle seat folds out of sight into a compartment under the adjacent seat cushion. Doing so opens up a clear passageway to the third row seating. Also, both rear seating rows fold flat to accommodate sizable cargo loads. To see it all in action, check out the video after the jump.
