Volkswagen talking newspaper ad

Volkswagen’s talking newspaper ad – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Imagine sitting down to this with your morning coffee. Volkswagen has teamed up with The Times Of India to insert an audio chip into its full-page ad on the back of the newspaper. Nifty, yes, but we wouldn’t be surprised to learn that a handful of readers were startled enough to blow tea out their nose. It’s an unexpected piece of advertising, but it certainly draws in a reader’s attention.

According to the folks at Wired, the audio chip appears to use a photodiode (a device that controls an electric current based on the presence of a light source) attached to a small battery for power. The audio loop is activated once the newspaper is opened and keeps playing until the paper is shut (or until cereal milk is spilled on it – whichever comes first). Seeing is believing, though, so hit the jump to watch a video of the talking ad in action.

DTV Shredder

DTV Shredder – Click above to watch video after the jump

There’s always been a few problems with skateboards. They aren’t motorized, don’t have tank treads, don’t effectively operate off road and they don’t hover. A defense contractor by the name of BPG-Works has gone ahead and eliminated a fair amount of those issues with a new creation that it’s calling the DTV Shredder. The contraption looks like a mighty fine way to put one’s self in the hospital, though BPG-Works is hoping that it could revolutionize the way troops move in the near future. We won’t hold our breath for that one.

Even so, with a 15-horsepower gasoline engine on board and a top speed of 30 mph, the DTV Shredder seems like an absolute blast. There’s no word on how much one of these contraptions go for, but we can imagine that they aren’t exactly a cheap thrill. Hit the jump to take a look at a demonstration video of this Johnny Five for the military set.

Video: Austin GP lap rendered and run

A sample lap has been rendered of the track in Austin, Texas that’s set to host the U.S. Grand Prix come 2012. Another Hermann Tilke-designed layout, the 3.4-mile circuit has 20 corners and plenty of elevation change; in fact, in some areas it looks more like a Disney ride than a venue for driving upwards of 200 mph. Since we’re going to lose some European races to make room for the USGP, we hope it’s good. Check it out for yourself after the jump.

2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS commercial – Click above to watch video after the jump

Mercedes-Benz has just released a new ad for its new 2012 CLS. The big German luxury yacht is one of the more stylish sedans in its segment thanks to its fresh redesign, and apparently, rascally young whippersnappers will do just about anything to bring the car to a stop so they can get a better look. Or something.

Though the overall “coupe-like” shape of the CLS remains for next year, Mercedes-Benz has infused the vehicle with a number of design elements aimed at giving the four-door a little bit more soul. Along with the corporate upright grille and dizzying headlight array up front, the sides of the vehicle now feature some seriously flared fenders and an elegant crease just below the shoulder line.

We dig. Mercedes-Benz plans to show off the 2012 CLS in the flesh at this year’s Paris Motor Show starting next month. Hit the jump to take a look at the new commercial.

Video: Banned Smart ad sells using fear of back seats?

Fear of a Back Seat - Smart Ad

Smart ForTwo preys on your back-seat fears – Click above for video after the jump

Are you afraid of getting into your car late at night, only to look in the rearview mirror and see a face staring back at you that isn’t yours? Don’t lie – we all have those random, irrational fears which are all but unfounded. Capitalizing on just such a fear, Daimler’s Smart produced a commercial which preyed on those fears and closed with a clever tagline espousing the fact that Smart ForTwos don’t have a back seat.

The ad was a huge hit in Germany, where it was originally slated to run during the trailers in movie theaters. It garnered such approval that it eventually made its way into television spots throughout Europe and has now ended up on Youtube as a “banned” ad. As we understand it, though, the ad wasn’t banned, it just never aired in the States. The ‘banned” moniker should help it earn some views, but the commercial is good enough on its own to warrant viewing.

See for yourself after you turn on the lights, check behind you and make the jump.

Video: Scott Speed’s Redbull NASCAR taxi earns its fare in Chicago

Scott Speed takes his NASCAR taxi to Chicago – Click above to watch video after the jump

With the venerable Ford Crown Victoria on its way out, cabbies all across the country are being forced to come up with all kinds of solutions to their passenger-hauling needs. The Toyota Camry has a bit of favor with this crowd thanks to its roomy back seat, efficient drivetrain and inexpensive MSRP. Of course, all of that goes out of the window when you start talking about the NASCAR interpretation of the sedan. Red Bull recently decided to put one of its tri-oval terrors to work on the streets of Chicago as a cab, complete with none other than Scott Speed behind the wheel.

With a few additions like real headlights, brake lights, turning indicators and a license-plate bezel, the Number 82 Camry was handily transformed into a street legal machine. Speed spent the better part of a morning shuffling people around the streets of the Windy City in a blaze of tire smoke and V8 glory. It looks like plenty of fun, and we’re guessing there will never be another cab ride quite like it. Still, we think we’d rather end up in the Cash Cab. Hit the jump to check out the video.

According to The Daily Telegraph, over 100 spectators watching a race were injured in Brazil when a section of bleachers collapsed. Around 500 spectators were observing at a drag race in the Brazilian city of Quatro Pontes when the structure gave way. Six people were immediately taken to the hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the incident, and two of those are still in critical condition.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, though structural faults are believed to have been the cause. Click past the jump for a video of the collapse, but be warned, the images may be upsetting for some viewers.

Motor Trend pits Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 against the Porsche 911 Turbo

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 versus Porsche 911 Turbo – Click above to watch video after the jump

One is an American-bred land rocket and the other a Teutonic track terror. They are the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo, and Motor Trend has pitted them head-to-head.

Former Autoblog scribe and known flip-flop aficionado Jonny Lieberman provides the voice work and the words for the buff book’s latest supercar comparo, with Herr Lieberman calling the 911 Turbo “the fastest manual transmission car we’ve ever tested.” Acceleration is one thing, but what about sex appeal? According to Jonny, “… both cars were alternately parked in front of my house for two weeks, but I discovered pink lipstick marks only on the Corvette’s windshield. That’s right, someone kissed the ZR1.”

We have video of both cars running side-by-side for 1,320 feet and the winner is not much of a surprise. The overall winner of the comparison? Well, that’s another story, and the results may surprise you. Hop the jump to see the clip of these two going head-to-head [*Warning: Autoplay].

2011 Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200

2011 Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Aprilia just released video of its brand new Dorsoduro 1200 dancing through a set of mountain twisties. Better still, the whole shebang is set to the ever-badass tunes of ZZ Top. It’s our kind of kitsch. If you’re still reading and not watching the video after the jump, we’re not sure if we can still be friends. The big v-twin looks like an absolute blast with its quasi-motard stance. Even with that massive mill saddled down low, the riders in the video don’t seem to have any problem flinging the bike through a series of somewhat technical turns.

The downside, of course, is that as of right now, Aprilia has no plans to bring the big Dorsoduro 1200 to the land of the free. That means that if you like what you see, you better pick up the phone and start hounding your local dealer. There’s always a chance that with enough interest, Aprilia just might change its mind. Hit the jump to see the flick for yourself.

The woman who tracks down real customers for car commercials [w/ video]

Danya Solomon

Danya Solomon helps manufacturers find customer testimonials – Click above to watch video after the jump

The testimonial is one of advertising’s oldest weapons. It’s a simple formula: If someone spent his or her hard-earned money on a product and lived to tell about it, chances are it will be good enough for you. But where do advertising companies come up with the jokers that we see splashed all over our television screens? It turns out that they look to one individual with a knack for finding people who are especially loyal to a specific brand or product. Her name is Danya Solomon.

Solomon is responsible for rounding up the everyday Joes and Janes we’ve seen on ads from Ford and Toyota lately. She spends her days scouring the internet, standing in parking lots and busting down pool-hall doors to find consumers who are passionate about the products they buy. The next time you see an average atomic family stand up and profess their love for a sedan, chances are Solomon had something to do with bringing them to the small screen. Hit the jump to see a few of the commercials she helped cast.
