2011 Ford Mustang vs 2010 BMW M3 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Ask and ye shall receive. Well, not always. We could probably ask to borrow a 2010 BMW M3, a 2011 Ford Mustang GT and private access to both a drag strip and a road course until our faces turned blue, but that doesn’t mean we’d get any of the four anytime soon. Fortunately, that’s not the case with the goons at Motor Trend. They’ve set about answering the question on everyone’s mind once the specs for these two mighty coupes turned out to be so similar – who’s top dog?

In classic MT fashion, the two cars were put through all of the necessary paces to drum up semi-official figures. Both the bad Bavarian and the muscle-bound Blue Oval were tested on 0-60, quarter mile, skid pad, figure eight and lap times, and the results are, well, they’re surprising. We won’t ruin the surprise by telling you who comes out ahead of the curve, but we will say that we know where we’d put our money if it were our name on the line. Hit the jump for the flicks. Thanks for the tips, everyone!

Walter Röhrl driving the Porsche 911 GT2 RS – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Fact: We would run many a gauntlet in order to get some on-track seat time behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Hell, we’d be overjoyed just to get a secondhand, passenger seat experience of what this monstrous 911 is capable of. And if we had our choice of drivers, Walter Röhrl, Porsche’s senior test driver and decorated racer, would be our first pick.

Until that day comes, however, we’ll just sit back and watch this video of Porsche’s tame racing driver piloting the 630-horsepower GT2 RS around Luk Driving Center. Buckle up and watch this in-car video for yourself, after the jump.

The Audi A1 certainly looks the part of a premium micro mini. Luxury touches like LED headlamps and available faux aluminum trim helps make the case that Audi’s newest and smallest ride deserves to wear the four-ringed badge.

But beyond attractive sheet metal and a typically wonderful Audi interior, we can’t help but wonder how the A1 handles itself. Is it too small to feel luxurious on the open road? Does it have the chops to take on the venerable Mini Cooper?

Jonny Smith from Fifth Gear attempts to answer those questions and more by taking the A1 for a spin on UK streets. Hit the jump to take in the 3:09 video. We don’t want to spoil anything, but lets just say that we’re very interested in getting our hands on the smallest Audi money can buy.

Video: Translogic tests Chevy Volt, reveals Mountain Mode and 0-60 time

2011 Chevrolet Volt

Translogic Episode 5.4 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Our brothers from another mother over at Translogic just released their latest episode yesterday, episode 5.4 for whoever’s counting. Host Bradley Hasemeyer spent a day with General Motors at the automaker’s Milford Proving Ground driving the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and came away with some heretofore unknown tidbits of information about the series hybrid.

For one, in addition to Eco, Normal and Sport modes, the Volt will have what’s called Mountain Mode that allows it to climb any grade in the country. A GM engineer says they checked to be sure its Mountain Mode was adequate for any grade in the States and we have proof of at least one major mountain the Volt can climb. When Mountain Mode is selected, ideally about ten miles out from any big hills you want to climb, the Volt will kick on its on-board generator and create extra energy for the batteries. This allows the Volt’s drive system to draw more power than normal from the battery packs while climbing a grade. If the battery packs are drained and the generator’s already on, Mountain Mode will then increase the engine’s RPM to make up the difference.

Bradley also performed an impromptu 0-60 miles per hour test in the Volt, completing the run to highway speeds in 8.53 seconds while the car was in Sport mode. Not earth shatteringly quick, but plenty spry to feel normal in everyday driving conditions. Over the course of the day, Bradley drove the Volt a total of 59.7 miles, 16.1 of which occurred with the gas-powered range-extending on. During that time, 0.59 gallons of gas were consumed, which means the Volt achieved about 100 mpg for the day and 27.3 mpg while the engine was operating.

The rest of the video is full of Volt information of which we’re already aware, including how it interacts with mobile devices, charging options and the like, though we can’t say we’ve seen anybody throw around the Volt yet like Bradley did. Follow the jump to view episode 5.4 for yourself and visit the Translogic blog here.

Ken Block preps for the ADAC Rally – Click above to watch video after the jump

They don’t call it the World Rally Championship for nothing. The globe’s best and brightest descend on the pinnacle of the rally sport to duke it out all over the planet, and while Ken Block hasn’t fared as well as predicted this season, he’s at least made it to the point where he can step into the ring. Right before Block took to the ADAC Rally in a new Focus bruiser, he sat down to answer a few questions from the likes of the crew at 0-60 Magazine. At the time, Block had never ran a tarmac WRC rally and was busy practicing the wheels off of the new car.

That practice served him well. For the first time, it looked like Block was going to land points with a ninth place finish over all until the car’s alternator died on day three, effectively banishing him to the back of the pack once more. There’s just no beating bad luck. Hit the jump to watch the interview for yourself.

Epic blunder at QuakeCon

Raffle ticket regret at QuakeCon 2010 – Click above to watch video after the jump

QuakeCon is an annual pilgrimage for gamers held near Dallas, Texas. Dubbed the Woodstock of gaming, QuakeCon’s motto is “4 Days of Peace, Love and Rockets.” At least one of this year’s attendees won’t be feeling so peaceful, though. QuakeCon sponsor Ventrilo held a raffle for the chance to win a 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 (two were up for grabs at the con). 100 tickets were awarded to attendees who won various tournaments and contests during the four-day fest.

One of said ticket holders was approached by another attendee a few minutes before the car drawing. For $200, he handed over his raffle ticket. It probably seemed like a great deal at the time. After all, it’s easy money, and it’s not as if he stood a chance of actually winning, right? Minutes later, the seller watched as the ticket he pawned off turned into a brand new Shelby GT500. But hey, at least he got a couple hundred bucks out of the deal – along with a story to tell and a heap of regrets. Bonus: everything is on video, including the fateful transaction. Follow the jump to see how it all unfolded. Thanks for the tip, Sean!

2011 Chevrolet Cruze mixes it up – Click above to watch video after the jump

Development engineers rarely get to have the same kind of fun as, say the guys out flogging the crap out of prototype mules on the test track, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a good time. A few of the lab coats behind making sure the audible quality of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is up to par have gotten together to work up a sound collage featuring all of the moving bits on the new compact.

If you’re looking for an up close and personal look at just how tomb-like the sedan’s doors actually are or you have a thing for watching an engineer stomp and clap his hands at the same time, you’ll want to check out the video after the jump. If you like what you hear, the Cruze starts at a meager $16,995. Thanks for the tip, Mike!

Video: F1 2010 is too realistic in the wet

Click above to watch the video after the jump

Codemasters’ F1 2010 doesn’t appear to be getting the same kind of press as Gran Turismo 5 or even DiRT 3, but a recently released in-game video could change that. The upcoming Formula 1 game is scheduled to hit stores in September, complete with damn-near photo-realistic gaming action that has us drooling. And we’re not talking about those fanciful panning, aerial beauty shots that you see in some of the theatrical-looking promos for games. This is actual in-car, live racing footage. In the rain. Hit the jump to experience F1 2010 from the virtual cockpit of a Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 car.

Video: Pagani backgrounds its ‘Ring run in the Zonda R

The Pagani Zonda R is one freaky-fast exotic. In fact, we found out exactly how amazing the 750 horsepower supercar was when it turned in a Ferrari 599xx-crushing lap time of 6:47.5 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. But the final ‘Ring run is only part of the tale, so Pagani created a 3:45 documentary to fill in the details of the unofficial king of The Green Hell.

The video gets into the reasons Pagani takes its vehicles to the ‘Ring for testing, what makes driving the freakish-looking R fast so (relatively) easy and more. Hit the jump to experience the video for yourself. Most of the audio is 100 percent Italian with English translation available via text at the bottom of the screen, but we’re thinking it’s still worth your time.

Karting in Gran Turismo 5 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Despite our best efforts, we’re getting pretty excited about the arrival of Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 5. After suffering through years of the company (and the interwebs at large) crying wolf with launch dates, it appears as if we may finally have the game in our hands by the end of this year. There’s also some word that the release will coincide with the second coming of various deities. By now, chances are you’ve heard all about the new race modes available with the next chapter in the simulator franchise, including the addition of NASCAR, but here’s one that took us by surprise.

A video has just recently cropped up on YouTube showing what appears to be a kart race in GT5. We haven’t heard one way or the other whether we’ll be able to slide a shifter through the corners of our favorite Gran Turismo tracks or if this was just some sort of one-off ditty built for a demonstration. That doesn’t stop us from hoping for the former, though. Hit the jump to see the video for yourself.
