Video: Lowrider loses its bounce

Lowrider goes over – Click above to watch video after the jump

We’ll admit that we’re not exactly up-to-date on the rules or goals of a lowrider hop off. It’s been awhile since we dusted off the Monte and threw down, but the last time we checked, flipping the car wasn’t part of the plan. Unfortunately, the gentleman in the video after the jump must have missed that memo. In the quest for ever more height for his remote-controlled monstrosity, his Chevrolet goes shiny side down after a few epic bounces. Impressively enough, the car doesn’t flip the easy way. Oh no. Instead of just rolling over and playing dead, the big coupe goes vertical before falling on its head.

After watching the car pancake itself, we’re suddenly fans of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s new focus on rollover protection. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.

Cadillac CTS-V Coupe versus Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 – Click above to view the video after the jump

Nearly every major media outlet has pitted the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe against the best and brightest from the high-powered sports coupe segment, and thus far, the results have been predictable. Motor Trend brought the supercharged Caddy coupe to Germany for a full-scale battle against the BMW M3 and Audi RS5, while Car & Driver brought the three sleds together for a entertaining track tango with ear-bleeding audio.

Road & Track have taken another tack with CTS-V Coupe, opting for an all-American drag-race of the 556-horsepower Cadillac against the 550-horsepower 2011 Shelby GT500 Mustang. The GT500 and the CTS-V Coupe are made within 100 miles of one another in southeast Michigan and two vehicles are within .3 inches of one another in overall length. The CTS-V Coupe has 41 more pound-feet of torque, while the Mustang is lighter. But which vehicle posts a better 0-60 time? How about the fastest quarter mile? Hit the jump to find out.

Video: Road & Track working on 200 mph Suzuki Kizashi for Bonneville?!

Road & Track record-breaking Suzuki Kizashi – Click above to watch video after the jump

You can’t accuse the guys at Road & Track of lacking ambition. The magazine has announced plans to tackle the seemingly impossible by building a Suzuki Kizashi to do battle at Speed Week on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The crew will be shooting for not one, but two different land speed records. On the low end is the naturally-aspirated gas coupe record which, for some odd reason, sits at a lowly 103 mph. The plan is to unbolt the factory turbo and run the car as a naturally aspirated machine. That shouldn’t be so much of an issue considering that the stock Kizashi can knock off that kind of speed without so much as turning a wrench under the hood.

The really impressive feat will be seeing whether or not the Kizashi can topple the blown gas coupe category. That record sits at a more respectable 202 mph, which means the Road & Track team will need to work the little Suzuki up to at least 203 mph. To do that, the crew turned to Richard Holdener – a man with plenty of experience pulling other worldly speed out of common cars. Hit the jump for a look at the first three in a series of videos about the build.

Oldsmobile Cutlass dicing it up – Click above to watch video after the jump

From the file marked “When Men Were Men,” we have this Car & Track review of the 1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442. Sure Clarkson can work his way around a 458, but let’s see him handle this baby: 455 cubic inches with a four-barrel carb, 225 horsepower, 0-to-50 in 5.5 seconds, 198 feet to stop from 70 mph and more body roll than a Carnival cruise ship in a Category 5. And check out the reverse spin test to gauge body roll – that’s how you review a car. Follow the jump for a rollicking look at car history.

Video: Ford Fiesta takes care of the ‘Honey Do’ list, Ken Block style

Ken Block takes out the trash – Click above to watch video after the jump

At some point during the development of the American vernacular, the term “grocery getter” became a term of condescension. Thing is, lugging around a few bags of consumables and clipping apexes don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Ford is hoping the average U.S. car buyer has outgrown the prejudices of his forebearers and is willing to jump into something with a hatchback. To help dispel any lingering thoughts of boredom, the Blue Oval has called on none other than Ken Block to use his guano-crazy Fiesta WRC rally racer to take care of a few household chores. Sideways.

The quick clip after the jump is filled with the kind of car control we’ve come to expect from Block, even with his recent run of bad luck in the WRC. If you like what you see in the video, you can register for a chance to win a 2011 Fiesta worked up to look just like Block’s racer. Something tells us the grand-prize car won’t be all-wheel drive, though. Hit the jump to watch the video, as well as check out the full press release with details on the drawing.

Top Gear reviews the Ferrari 458 Italia – Click above to watch video after the jump

Jeremy Clarkson has got his hands on a Ferrari 458 Italia, and his particular take on the coupe involves a comparison to the venerable 308, a drag race with James May’s personal F430, Clarkson opening his heart to flappy paddles, a “humiliation” and of course, a lap with The Stig. All that and more is a click away, so follow the jump to get watching. Hat tip to Tyler!

Red Bull’s Mark Webber running Spa for the Red Bulletin – Click above to watch video after the jump

Although all the F1 focus was on Hungaroring this past weekend, Red Bull is gearing up for the race at Spa at the end of August. This time it’s Mark Webber taking us around the Spa Francorchamps circuit in the Red Bull simulator, and if we can offer a little advice: he might want to be a bit more careful through Eau Rouge come race time… There’ll be an augmented reality feature on the track at www.redbulletin.com soon, but for now you can follow the jump for the video.

UPDATE: Video linked fixed.

Dirt 3 trailer – Click above to watch video after the jump

Ken Block might not have made it out of the first round of last weekend’s X Games Rally, but he’ll be coming with a lot more rallying in a lot more locales soon enough. Dirt 3, next in the Codemasters series of off-road drifting action, arrives in 2011 with Ken Block front-and-center. The game’s trailer was unveiled during the X Games, and on top of the plethora of climates and locales you’ll get to test yourself at Block’s own game: gymkhana. Follow the jump for a taste of what’s on the way in the game. Hat tip to Andrey!

Video: Double Bill – C/D and MT pit Cadillac CTS-V Coupe vs. Audi RS5 vs. BMW M3

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Videos, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Luxury

Click above to watch the video after the jump

The Cadillac CTS-V Coupe has some serious performance chops. The potent angular coupe is loaded with a blown 6.2-liter V8 capable of 556-horsepower, 15-inch front and 14.7-inch rear Brembo brakes and a Magnetic Ride Control suspension setup. Impressive stats to be sure, but does Cadillac’s sleek two-seater have the goods to take on the BMW M3 coupe and Audi RS5?

Both Motor Trend and Car and Driver have obviously been pondering the same question, as the competing buff mags dusted off their camcorders and cut up a pair of comparison videos featuring the three super coupes doing a ménage à trois of the automotive kind.

Make the jump to experience both videos. In the first video, MT goes all-out with its comparison, bringing both Editor-in-Chief Angus McKenzie and the spanking new CTS-V Coupe to Germany to take on the pair of well-established Bavarian competitors. The second video shows the unique C/D approach, with no first, second or third place finishers and not a single word is uttered. C/D just let the hot coupes speak for themselves with beautiful pictures and heavenly exhaust notes.

Video: The Smoking Tire gets to play with the Firebreather

The Smoking Tire drives the Firebreather – Click above to watch video after the jump

Matt Farah and the crew from The Smoking Tire just can’t seem to get enough of the 2011 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible they had for this year’s Bullrun. With the cross-country party over and nothing but a mountain of citations looming in the distance, The Smoking Tire set out to give the big Blue Oval one last goodbye. Of course, they couldn’t spend an entire episode pouring over every last detail of a vehicle that regular viewers know all too well. Instead, the show lined up a quick stint behind the wheel of the Classic Design Concepts Firebreather.

Think of it as what the 2010 Pontiac Firebird would have looked like if the Poncho had survived the GM apocalypse and the company’s designers had been on acid. If you can get past the wildly rear sheet metal and the drooping front fascia, there’s a supercharged version of the 6.2-liter V8 in the Chevrolet Camaro on which it’s based. The whole concoction is good for 600 horsepower, and while the car was originally worked up for an Exodus Productions movie, Classic Design Concepts will be selling genuine Firebreather models to the public. Hit the jump to see Farah wrangle the car through a canyon or two.
