Video: Russian windshield wiper fix strings us up

Russians drive Lada in rainy weather with pull-string windshield wipers.

Speaking to the effectiveness of ingenuity and improvisation, the string-pull windshield wipers in this Russian Lada work surprisingly well in the snow and the rainy weather. We wouldn’t recommend practicing this MacGyver-like move unless it’s absolutely necessary, but then again, there can’t be too many Ladas in the US.

So what’s all the jesting about? We’re told the car’s occupants are joking about hand-wiper jobs, and the driver is cautioning the passenger not to rip the rope. That leads us to the tip of the day: remember to keep the wiping motion nice and slow to preserve the string. Watch the video below to see the strung-up wipers in action.

Video: LaFerrari gets shakedown from Fernando Alonso

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Videos, Ferrari

Video of Fernando Alonso driving Ferrari LaFerrari

Fernando Alonso is quite cool behind the wheel, as evidenced by an earlier video where he gave a full interview while actively hooning a Ferrari F12 around the Nürburgring. So when you see the Spaniard somber-faced and sweating while hustling a Ferrari LaFerrari around the Scuderia’s Fiorano test track, you know the new hypercar is pretty demanding.

Alonso doesn’t give commentary on this one (except to the engineers at the end), but he does wrestle the 949-horsepower hybrid around the track. It does look like a handful. Take a look below for the full video.

Video: Powerball winner’s first purchase will be used Acura NSX off Craigslist

Video of Powerball winner Paul White

We don’t play the lottery very often, but when we do, even a five-dollar win is cause for celebration. So we can’t possibly imagine how Paul White from Minnesota is feeling after scoring a third of this week’s $448 million Powerball jackpot. It has to be an overwhelming experience, but we think he’s going to end up handling it well if his first press conference is any indication.

Like some of us, White has a pretty reasonable idea of what his first purchase is, and boy, is it a good one: an early Acura NSX. Yes, this man has class. Rather than run out and buy a clichéd Rolls-Royce or Lamborghini, his first instinct is to go pick up a $30,000 Acura that he has been eyeing on Craigslist for months. It’s enough to make us wonder if he’ll use his winnings to get on the list for one of Acura’s new NSXs when they finally come around in 2015.

Watch White describe what it is about the NSX that makes heart skip a beat in the press conference video from USA Today below (note: video autoplays).

Video: CarTube answers what happens when you add YouTube to cars

Braly Political makes a video about what would happen if YouTube made apps for cars. Enter CarTube.

We’ve already found out what can happen to people when they drive while operating their cell phones, and it can be tragic. There are plenty of studies on distracted driving that show use of mobile devices while behind the wheel is both dangerous and increasingly commonplace, and the obvious solution, voice-controlled technology, might also be more dangerous than we thought.

But technology doesn’t slow down for anybody. With digital media devices becoming an inescapable part of our lives, YouTube applications have become so popular that the video service can be operated on almost anything with a screen. But there’s one frontier YouTube hasn’t conquered: the automobile. Could you imagine what would happen if we could watch videos on car windshields, or had a keyboards mounted to steering wheels? We’re glad Barely Political dared to imagine (but we hope YouTube doesn’t), and then made a hilariously creepy video about it for YouTube’s Geek Week called Introducing CarTube. All we ask is that this one stays in the idea box.

We won’t spoil the fun, so be sure to watch the video below – this one shouldn’t be missed!

Video: Toyota builds world’s first ‘outdoor website’ for RAV4 promo

toyota rav-4 outdoor website with bike rider

This whole thing started with the premise that Toyota’s target RAV4 buyers are people who spend their time cycling, hiking, and generally not in front of computer screens. These people are therefore not able to benefit from the full website experience that Toyota has built for the RAV4. We should clarify that the video below is for Toyota South Africa, and maybe RAV4 buyers there really are the disgustingly outdoorsy ideal that us bacon-eaters are not living up to.

Toyota’s agency partner, Hello Computer, set up a 1.8-kilometer track at a cycle park that replicated sections of the automaker’s website with real physical displays and interactive feedback. Riders were asked to leave their mouses and hit the trail on a mountain bike to experience the RAV4 Outdoor Website and learn about the vehicle.

That seems like a lot of effort for something that’s available on the smartphones of these hyper-active people who aren’t in front of computers, but hooray for creatively conquering a problem that didn’t exist. Hey, let’s not be complete wet blankets – maybe some of the cyclists that ran the Toyota gauntlet got a RAV4 for their to- and fro-ing after the experience. Check out the video of the outdoor website below.

Video: How to hack a Buick Regal with CarKnow

Buick Regal hacking video - image of gauge cluster with warning lights

If you own an Apple iPhone or Android device, perhaps you’ve been tempted to jailbreak or root it. This process gives you access to the the software’s code, and can be used to make minor or drastic changes to its operating system. CarKnow, a company in Boston, is working applying a similar concept to the automobile.

Translogic recently took a look inside CarKnow to see just how it can tweak the computers inside a car and what sort of things can be done. As our transportation tech sister site explains, CarKnow basically created a digital duplicate of their Buick Regal in the cloud, while harvesting data generated to create custom apps and infiltrate the deepest function of their test car.

And before you freak out about people maliciously taking over your car, CarKnow’s founder, Josh Siegel, stresses that it isn’t quite so easy as driving up alongside someone. Take a look at the full video below to see just what it’s like to jailbreak a car.

Video: 1964 Jaguar XKE slinks into Jay Leno’s Garage

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Videos, Jaguar, Celebrities

The idea of altering a classic Jaguar E-Type might seem preposterous to some, but Jasen Len of XKs Unlimited managed to create a modified 1964 E-Type that stays true to the Jag’s timeless design. Just a few months after Jay Leno featured his own original E-Type on Jay Leno’s Garage, Len stopped by to show off his custom Jaguar creation.

Starting out with a rust-ravaged body, Len made the car just the way he wanted it to be. He started off with some minor changes to the car’s exterior like the Le Mans-inspired racing lights and handmade front bumpers, handmade sills with integrated exhaust and flared rear fenders. Inside, he dropped the floor to make more interior space and reworked the E-Type’s styling for more of a modern look. We have to say, if you’re going to mess with a Series 1 E-Type, this is the way to do it.

Sadly, even though Len and Leno spend plenty of time talking about the car’s 300-horsepower 3.8-liter inline six-cylinder, we never get to hear the car fire up. Check out the JLG video, which is posted below, and as a bonus, enjoy the gallery from Jaguar showing a 1961 E-Type.

Video: ‘Faster. Farther.’ dives into the history of Porsche racing tech

Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Porsche, Racing

Porsche video highlights technological achievements in preparation for a US museum display of the 917.

No doubt, Porsche has produced some of the best endurance racecars around, such as the turbocharged, slant-nose 935 of the 1970s and the ground-effects-enhanced 956 and 962 of the 1980s. But the company’s most famous racecar, its first overall winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, was the 917.

The 917 embodied many of Porsche’s technological achievements up to that point, such as the company’s first 12- and 16-cylinder engines (the flat-16 was never used in competition), fiberglass bodies that implemented early aerodynamic practices and the use of new, exotic materials, such as magnesium and titanium.

The racecar was commissioned by the head of Porsche Motorsports, Ferdinand Piëch, to win overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970, after he realized a loophole in the rules that allowed cars to compete with engines up to five liters in the Sport category if they were also production models. Piëch saw opportunity: the top prototype class was restricted to three liters; the production minimum to compete in Sport was 25 cars. And so, with much effort, Porsche assembled 25 “production” 4.5-liter 917s and had them parked in a neat line for the race inspectors to verify their legitimacy. It didn’t take long before people realized the new Porsches were much faster than the prototype racers, with a top speed approaching 250 miles per hour.

Porsche is putting two 917s on display in the North Carolina Museum of Art starting on Oct. 12, and the company produced a video, which you can watch below, to hype up the exhibit. Enjoy!

Video: Shelby GT500 and Roush Stage 3 go head to head at the drag strip

Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Ford, Racing

Video screencap of Roush Stage 3 vs. Ford Shelby GT500

The Ford Mustang is a brilliantly affordable source of horsepower, with a base 300-plus-horsepower version available for well under $30,000. Jumping up to about $35,000 will get you a solid 420 horsepower from a high-revving V8, while those with some extra disposable income can get a pair of 600-plus-horsepower monsters. Both the Roush Stage 3 with its Phase 3 package and Ford’s factory Shelby GT500 even crest the 650-horsepower mark, with 675 and 662 ponies, respectively.

Naturally, someone needed to find out which of these hi-po Mustangs was the quickest. And while this video is quite obviously a dealership commercial, at least there’s some solid drag racing between two of the most powerful performance machines available for under $100,000.

With two NHRA drag racers at the wheel, the Stage 3 and GT500 go head to head for three races. Scroll down below to see the results in the full video.

Video: Learn how Hot Wheels built a life-sized Double Loop

Filed under: Motorsports, Technology, Videos, Racing

Hot Wheels Double Loop Dare documentary screencap

At the 2012 X-Games, Hot Wheels attempted a death-defying, double loop. Unlike when you were a kid and actively trying to destroy your toy cars, though, this was a life-size attempt, with real drivers behind the wheel. The massive stunt, with two 66-foot-tall loops, was completed by Tanner Foust and Greg Tracy, and now there’s a short YouTube documentary on the process involved in setting up the stunt.

It shouldn’t be a surprise, but there were crashes in practice. Hot Wheels rigged up a poor Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback with a remote-control system as a practice vehicle, which eventually pancaked itself into the track midway through its run. The full-size RC car showed the lengths that the team went to get this stunt right, while making it as safe as possible for the two drivers.

You can check out the complete documentary below, along with the live lap from the 2012 X-Games in Los Angeles.
