Funny car checkup yields some unexpected excitement – Click above to watch video after the jump

If you aren’t terrified on some primordial level of the funny car drag racing class, odds are it’s only a matter of time before natural selection comes a-callin’. Most funnies run a variation on the 500 cubic-inch, supercharged big-block formula while slurping down nitromethane/methanol fuel by the drum. No one’s exactly sure how much power these suckers dish out, but estimates in the 8,000 pony range are typically considered conservative. Yeah. Wrap your noggin around that one for half a second. The whole concoction is designed to hold together just long enough scoot down the eighth or quarter mile, so it should come as no surprise that accidents happen.

We don’t want to blow the surprise for you (you’ll have to watch the video for that), but according to the video’s YouTube comments, the son of the driver was beginning to check his dad’s car over one last time when the vehicle’s supercharger broke a stud. Hit the jump to see what happened next.

Spy Video: Nissan GT-R SpecM gets wrung out at the ‘Ring

Nissan GT-R SpecM – Click above to watch video after the jump

Just when we thought the softer-riding Nissan GT-R SpecM had disappeared for good, the car shows up at the Nurburgring for a little abuse. The crew from Auto Motor und Sport managed to lay their hands on a lengthy video of a few barely-cloaked examples of the car scooting around Green Hell, and everyone’s best guess is that the vehicles are a peek at what we can expect out of the Nissan 2011 supercar lineup. As you likely recall, the SpecM is designed to be a more comfortable interpretation of the company’s no-holds barred bruiser. The suspension is tuned more for the street than busting around your favorite road course, and the interior is supposedly swaddled in more high-grade materials.

Judging from what we see in the video, we’re guessing that the new SpecM will wear aero additions borrowed from the mighty Spec-V, along with wheels swiped from the same car. Hit the jump to see the flick for yourself.

Elon Musk on The Colbert Report – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Elon Musk apparently has a sense of humor. Proof of which can be found in the video after the break, where you’ll see the co-founder of Paypal, Tesla Motors and Space X sit-down with Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report.

As always, Colbert takes a lighthearted slant with the interview, making a few comic-relief jabs along the way. For instance, after detailing Musk’s seemingly heroic take on the automotive and space exploration industries, Colbert point-blank asks Musk whether he’s a super hero or a super villain. We’ll let you figure that one out…

Our favorite quote, though, is this: “You have these electric cars that uses no fossil fuels, but then you’ve also got this rocket, this Space X that puts the rocket into space, using about as much fuel as 2,000,000 Hummers. So… are you just trying to break even as spectacularly as possible?”

There are plenty more gems in the video, and we don’t want to spoil the whole thing for you. So just check out the video after the break.

Porsche’s 911 GT3 pays a visit to Jay Leno’s Garage – click above to watch the video

Porsche recently dropped off a new 911 GT3 at Jay Leno’s garage where racer Justin Bell picked it up for a bit of a road trip. Before the trip, Leno and Bell discuss their preference for normally aspirated manual transmission Porsches over the more powerful turbos and dual-clutch PDKs.

On his way to Laguna Seca for the spring American Le Mans Series event, Bell finds a perfect little road for his own private hill climb and gushes over the responsiveness of the non-turbo engine and enormous Brembo binders. At Laguna, Bell hooks up with factory pilot Patrick Long to discuss the differences between the Flying Lizard Motorsports 911 he races and the roadgoing GT3 which spawned it. Even within the limits of the rules set out by the ACO, Flying Lizard and Porsche have managed to find a lot of creative ways to extract more speed out of their competition machine. Check out the full video after the jump.

Audi A7 Sportback – Click above to watch video after the jump

It will still be awhile before you can get an up close and personal look at the new Audi A7 Sportback. Since Audi recently flooded the interwebs with an array of images, you’ve likely already made up your mind as to whether you loathe or love the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo competitor, but there’s nothing like being able to walk around a vehicle for yourself without the cumbersome medium of a photographer’s lens between you and the sheet metal. Fortunately, Audi has been so kind as to share a lengthy studio walk-around video of the new quad-ring creation.

The flick lingers over just about every inch of the A7 Sportback, including the interior and exterior. We get a quick peep at the car’s mechanized rear spoiler, as well as the cavernous amounts of room under the lengthy hatch. It may not be quite the same as getting your finger prints all over the paint, but it’s dang close. Hit the jump to take a look.

Vovlo tests the world’s naughtiness – Click above to watch video after the jump

Some habits die hard. Swedish manufacturer Volvo has always been one for extensive research. The company’s reputation for safety is based largely on its understanding of the mechanics of a collision thanks to impossibly thorough field studies. So it should come as no surprise that when we all thought Volvo was putting down the clipboard in favor of a cocktail glass by throwing a slew of parties in some of the world’s most iconic cities, the carmaker was actually studying human behavior. Go figure. Why? The move was part of the quest to unearth the Naughty Capitol of Europe as part of the S60 marketing campaign.

Each of the company’s parties included a few clandestine experiments designed to test participants’ naughtiness, including seeing how many people would try to talk their way into a fake VIP room, hit on an actress who was pretending to be married or sprint through a well-manicured flower bed. Volvo held the same experiments in Berlin, London, Milan, Paris and Madrid. Not surprisingly, the City of Light took the crown by a wide, wide margin. Hit the jump for a look at a video of Swedish sins.

Pagani Zonda R runs the ‘Ring – Click above to watch video after the jump

The visuals to go with the “record.” Pagani blasted its Zonda R over the Nürburgring for the purposes of testing production components. Removing all the mystery from the endeavor, the in-car video shows the view out the window as the driver of the R resets yet another bar at 6:47. We put “record” in quotes simply because this flier isn’t road legal, so we’re in all kinds of gray area. But it beat the Ferrari 599XX, and that’s feat unto itself. Follow the jump for the sights and sounds.

Unidentified Ferrari mule – Click above to watch video after the jump

In an appearance more akin to UFO footage, one quick cameraphone-wielding shooter has caught a couple of seconds of a Ferrari mule doing a drive-by. There are cues from the 458 Italia up front, rear three-quarter glass that’s more 599, then a tiny rear overhang and what appears to be a vent slapped on the back of the greenhouse. We know there are a slew of Ferraris coming, so the question is, which one is this? Follow the jump to see the video and weigh in yourself.

Helio Castroneves tangles with security – Click above to watch video after the jump

IndyCar got a little more exciting this weekend. Turns out there was a bit of a mix-up during a restart at Edmonton with just a handful of laps to go that caused Helio Castroneves to incur a penalty from the powers that be. Officials were of the mind that the Brazilian driver intentionally blocked Penske teammate Will Power and ordered Castroneves to pull through the pits as punishment. By this time, Castroneves has secured first place and was within spitting distance of nabbing the checkered flag. But the driver didn’t feel like cooling his heels on pit road, opting instead to finish out the race.

Officials stripped Castroneves of his checkers and handed the win to Scott Dixon instead, which had the effect of setting the penalized racer off like a powder keg. After a lengthy tirade, Castroneves marched himself over to the winner’s circle with the intent of tying Dixon and anyone else who got in his way into a bow. Security intervened, but not before the Brazilian took to shaking a guard by his shirt collar. How’s that for racing? Hit the jump for the video. The action starts at about four minutes in.
