Video: Watch the Ferrari Superamerica 45 flip its lid

It’s a real shame that Ferrari is only building one Superamerica 45, because the car is gorgeous. Besides the lovely Blu Antille paint, the flying buttresses that mold the roof structure into the rear bodywork, and the body-colored wheels, this thing has one of the slickest roof mechanisms out there.

Hit a button, and the lid on the 599 GTB Fiorano-based roadster does a full backflip, executing a perfect landing on the car’s rear deck. It’s quick and sleek, and really helps sell the entire package. Like we said earlier, the Superamerica 45 is a one-off, built especially for collector Peter Kalikow.

Kalikow commissioned the car to be a modern version of the 1961 Ferrari Superamerica 400 that graces his collection. Color us envious. Check out the video after the jump.

Sonuvadigger backflip

Son-uva Digger backflip – Click above to watch video after the jump

Ryan Anderson is the son of monster truck legend and Grave Digger owner/driver Dennis Anderson, which makes him monster truck royalty. Despite his privileged place among the elites in the high court of methanol and fairgrounds, the young Anderson doesn’t spend much time riding his father’s coattails.

While Ryan may have used his father’s success as a launch pad, the Grave Digger heir apparent is eager to prove himself worthy of the crown. Anderson showed this at Monster Jam 2011 in Las Vegas, executing an awesome monster truck backflip. This may not be the first time a monster truck has ever flipped end over end, but it’s certainly the biggest one yet. Hit the jump to check it out.

Video: Watch split-screen action of 2011 Nissan GTR vs. Corvette ZR1

chevrolet corvette zr1 versus nissan gtr at the nurburgring

Last week we told you about the fresh, faster Nürburgring track times of the Nissan GTR, with video that proves that Godzilla 2012 managed to shave 2.48 seconds off its best lap. We were under the impression that the GTR’s new top time wasn’t enough to best the Corvette ZR1, but a side-by-side (or rather a top-to-bottom) comparison video of both runs gives us the definitive answer.

Beyond the jump is a video pitting the in-car camera view of the ZR1 (top screen) versus the 2012 GTR (bottom screen). Pay close attention from the five minute mark to about 6:20 into the clip, as the vehicle with the lead loses it for good at this point in the race. Very entertaining little competition, but you’ll have to hit the jump and watch to see the winner for yourself.

Japanese motorist's car engulfed by tsunami

Japanese tsunami footage from inside a car – Click above to watch the video after the break

Modern technology means that the world has an almost constant and unlimited amount of coverage of major news stories from all around the planet. That’s certainly true of the massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan, especially since Japan is one of the most tech-happy countries in the world.

And so it comes as little surprise that at least one Japanese man had a camera running in his car as he attempted to flee the impending rush of water near the coastline. Suffice it to say that his plans to escape failed miserably. Thankfully, though, the man lived to tell the tale, as did his footage.

Click past the break to see a truly harrowing video of a Japanese motorist’s car being engulfed by a two-meter tsunami. Again, this driver is truly lucky to have survived, and we know that hundreds if not thousands of Japanese citizens weren’t so fortunate. Our thoughts remain with the survivors.

Report: Saab to let buyers watch their cars get built online

Filed under: Car Buying, Plants/Manufacturing, Saab

Saab 9-5 Production Facility

Thinking of buying a 2011 Saab? If so, you’ll soon have the ability to watch it come together before your eyes; Saab is installing cameras in its Trollhättan factory. Customers will receive text messages with photos of their cars as they reach certain points in the assembly line. Eventually, Saab plans to add a real-time video feed of the cars being built. This sounds way more interesting than most reality television shows.

In addition to the cameras going in, Saab will soon offer customers the opportunity to take delivery of their cars right from the factory. The automaker says it is moving back towards building cars with a more personal touch, by manufacturing cars to order rather than churning out a steady stream of vehicles.

Video: Watch the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 flogged on the ‘Ring

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 – Click above to view the video after the jump

We’ve seen the Camaro Z28 from nearly every angle, but we haven’t seen it driven in anger. That’s rectified today with the release of a new spy video showing Chevrolet’s 500+ horsepower pony car being flogged at the Nürburgring in preparation for its debut within the next few months. More impressive than the supercharger whine emanating from the 6.2-liter LSA V8, is the surprising lack of squat, dive and body roll as the Z28 launches out of the starting gate, tackles a few high speed turns and comes flying out of the Carousel. See for yourself in the video after the jump.

OriginTimes bores out the Bugatti Veyron of watch winders

We’ve seen all kinds of creative and decorative uses for engine blocks, ranging from coffee tables to wine racks. This one, however, is decidedly more… mechanical.

The German craftsmen at OriginTimes have taken the engine block from none other than the Bugatti Veyron and turned it into a watch winder. The 16-cylinder block incorporates individual winders for (you guessed it) sixteen automatic timepieces, each individually adjustable and programmable according to the requirements of each watch, with each combustion-chamber-turned-watch-winder is lined in soft goatskin leather.

Of course you’d need to have a collection of sixteen automatic wrist watches to warrant the purchase – maybe a couple of Parmigiani Fleuriers among them – but if you’ve got the €75,000 (nearly $100k, before taxes) to spend on a watch winder, something tells us that won’t be an issue.

Pagani Zonda R runs the ‘Ring – Click above to watch video after the jump

The visuals to go with the “record.” Pagani blasted its Zonda R over the Nürburgring for the purposes of testing production components. Removing all the mystery from the endeavor, the in-car video shows the view out the window as the driver of the R resets yet another bar at 6:47. We put “record” in quotes simply because this flier isn’t road legal, so we’re in all kinds of gray area. But it beat the Ferrari 599XX, and that’s feat unto itself. Follow the jump for the sights and sounds.
