While we had our first genuine look at the 2014 Camaro SS back at the New York Auto Show this spring, we hadn’t yet gotten a glimpse of the droptop version of the pony car, until now.

Nabbed near Chevy’s home turf in beautiful Milford, MI, the ’14 Camaro SS Convertible looks ready for prime time as-is. We’ll be honest: From the shoulder-line up, this new Camaro looks almost identical to the outgoing car, with no apparent changes to the folding soft top or rakish A-pillars. Below the waist, the convertible shares the revised front hood, nose and revamped rear treatment with the SS coupe.

This particular SS Convertible is wearing a new set of 20-inch five spoke wheels, as well as a beefy quad exhaust setup out back. Sharp-eyed readers will also notice that the Chevy test driver isn’t terribly pleased with getting his picture taken. Gentle souls should avert their eyes for images four and five of our gallery…

We’re no stranger to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. The automaker’s two-seat flagship, powered by a 6.2-liter V8 rated at 563 horsepower, has been covered ad nauseam on our pages since its introduction nearly two years ago. We are big fans of the 3,573-pound aluminum-bodied sports car, so we’ve never avoided a chance to grab its key fob, swing open the unique “gull wing” doors and take it for a spin.

Presented with another opportunity to spend time with the eye-catching coupe, and realizing another driving review was simply out of the question, we chose to take the $203,500 Benz to a local middle school and see what the kids thought of it. Unlike us journalists, often oversaturated with horsepower and sexy sheet metal, the unjaded minds of kids could offer all of us a new perspective.

The Nielsen Company has counted the numbers from last weekend’s Super Bowl and determined that General Motors’ “Wild Ride” Chevrolet Camaro commercial (its official name is “Miss Evelyn”) has become the most-watched ad of all time with an estimated 119,628,000 viewers. You can rewatch the ad after the jump, but as you may recall, it’s about two guys creating their own Camaro commercial on the fly. The new viewership record beat the old one set by a Doritos commercial during last year’s big game that was seen by 116,231,920 viewers.

The crazy thing is that the old record was beaten by every ad that made this year’s top ten most viewed list, which in addition to the Camaro commercial also included ads for the Chevy Cruze, Chrysler 200 and Bridgestone tires. Credit not only the quality of this year’s Super Bowl commericals, but also an excellent game of pigskin that got better with each passing quarter. The Camaro commercial, for instance, got a boost from appearing during the fourth quarter when the game was anything but decided.

Nielsen is also reporting that Volkswagen’s “The Force” ad starring Max Page as Darth Vader was this year’s ‘best-liked’ commercial during the Super Bowl. The top ten list for most liked Super Bowl commercials was also littered with car-related ad, but curiously, the top ten ‘most-recalled’ ads didn’t feature a single automotive spot.

German tuning house Hamann isn’t known for producing boring vehicles, and its latest projected, dubbed the Victory II, is a prime example. Based off the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, the Victory II features a completely new look thanks to all new body panels, functional roof inlet, rear wing and 20-inch Hamann wheels. Inside, the car gets new carbon fiber sport seats and custom upholstery.

With the LP560-4 already producing 552 bhp and 398 lb-ft torque, Hamann decided to do only minor modifications to the 5.2L V10. New engine programming results in 20 more horsepower and an additional 26 lb-ft, resulting in a new top speed of 204 mph.

We’ve been guilty of over-ogling a Porsche or two in our time, but we’ve never become obsessed to the point of chasing a 911 up and down the road. But alas, there are some out there who are so star-struck by the sight of a well-crafted German sports coupe that they will resort to following its every move. In fact, we do have video of a pair of crazy turkeys that are virtually glued to just such a Porsche.

And when we say “turkey,” we’re not talking 1970s slang for someone who is “unreliable, makes empty promises, or who is full of bluster.” We’re talking about a pair of delicious, plump and angry wild birds looking to protect their turf at all costs. Hit the jump to watch the oddly funny video. Keep in mind that there are a couple of points where the distracted driver holding the camera forgets to stop recording (especially :50 in to the 1:18 mark), making for a bit of a nauseating viewing experience.

2010 Woodward: The Weird, Wild and Not-So-Wonderful

Nestled between the classic and muscle cars at the Woodward Dream Cruise are vehicles that turn heads for very different reasons. At some point in the history of the Dream Cruise, the fleet of quirky cruisers became as big a spectacle as a ’32 Ford Coupe or a ’57 Chevy. To be honest, we wouldn’t have it any other way because these often ludicrous machines bring a smile to our faces during a hard day’s work of covering the cruise.

This year, we spotted such fine rides as a Volkswagen Beetle that hinges to open like a Hungry Hungry Hippo (above), an Econoline van with a stripper pole and a late-model Monte Carlo with Lambo doors. That’s just three among the dozens of misfits we found trolling the streets of Woodward yesterday. Browse the gallery below for some high-res perspective on how to raise eyebrows while cruising the Woodward strip.

Recycling Gone Wild: Turn your VW Jetta TDI into a Smyth Performance G3F [w/video]

Reduce-Reuse-Recycle is the tri-directive that could help us become more sustainable as a society. Soon, a kit for the G3F from Smyth Performance – a new venture by Factory Five Racing co-founder Mark Smith – will follow those guidelines, enabling you to convert a previously-enjoyed Volkswagen Jetta into something you can really look forward to driving. The finished product will be lighter, faster and burn less biodiesel than the original vehicle, offering up to 60 miles per gallon and boasting a very naughty top speed of 140 miles per hour. All for about $10,000 and less than 100 hours of labor.

It’s a simple recipe. You start by procuring a TDI diesel Jetta four door sedan. Cut away about 800 lbs of metal, reusing a large chunk of the chassis, including the entire safety structure. The engine gets chipped, modded and moved from in front of the driver to behind. Add the body, seats, wheels and all the other included bits from the kit and voila! You now own a recycled VW that increases your joy of driving while reducing the amount of petroleum product you’ll need to pump.

Okay, maybe we’re making it sound a little easier than it actually is, but Smith is confident there is enough interest to make a go of it with a line of depositors already being formed. Despite deliveries (optimistically) planned for September, the original prototype is still under construction. The operation doesn’t have an official website either – that’s coming this fall – but you can follow the progress of both car and company on both Facebook and the unofficial Factory Five forum.
