ETC: Red Bull Soapbox winners and racers in all their glory [w/videos]

Red Bull Soapbox Race London UK

There is simply no end to the crazy stuff the crew from Red Bull will sponsor. From the well-known Formula 1 outfit to moped rallies to what you see here, soapbox racers, there seems to be nothing worth doing (or not, we suppose) that the energy drink isn’t interested in. And we’re thankful for that.

If not for Red Bull, where else in the world would you see grown men and women storm Alexandra Palace in the UK to spend a day barreling down a hill barricaded by hay bails with strategically placed jumps in gravity-driven wheeled vehicles just to get judged on their speed, creativity and showmanship? Nowhere. That’s where.

We can’t show you all 70-something teams that took part in the soapbox festivities in the UK this year, but we have managed to scrounge together a gallery of images from the event, and you can see videos of the top three finishers, along with some high- and low-lights, below.

Report: No $1M prize winners in contest to crack Toyota sudden acceleration syndrome

Shadowy Toyota logo with Camry

Last year, Edmunds asked its readership to recreate a mechanical or electrical cause of sudden unintended acceleration of the kind that allegedly plagued Toyota in 2009 and 2010. The prize for coming up with verifiable proof of mechanical failure causing SUA was a cool $1 million dollars. Perhaps unsurprisingly, that contest just concluded without a winner.

Over the course of the year, Edmunds readers were unable to come up with proof that a mechanical or electrical fault caused the accidents that led to Toyota’s drastic recall. That backs up NASA’s finding that absolved Toyota of any wrongdoing. With mechanical failure ruled out as a viable cause of SUA, we’re left with an uncomfortable thought: Short of those dealing with binding floor mats or those sticky recalled pedals, driver error was almost certainly the culprit for the flurry of unintended acceleration claims.

Topspeed Motorsports Porsche 911 GT2

Live stream of this year’s One Lap of America – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Doug Wilks and Leh Keen swept to victory in last year’s Tire Rack One Lap of America at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT2. This year, Keen and Wilks have partnered up again, only this time they’ll be piloting a Nissan GT-R prepared by Wilks’ Topspeed Motorsports. Better than that, the pair will be live-streaming the eight-day event, thanks to an in-car webcam.

Besides live footage of every inch of the 3,000-plus-mile event, the pair will have Google Maps tracking their location, a blog and live interactive chat with viewers. All the interactive goodness is available on Topspeed as you read this.

With the power of the GT-R, already a proven One Lap winner, the Grand Am and ALMS driving skills of Keen and Wilks’ mechanical expertise, Topspeed Motorsports looks poised to make another run at the top spot. Click past the jump to see Topspeed’s live feed, or head over to their website for the full interactive experience. Thanks for the tip, Nathan!

SideQuesting.com is a website focused on discussions about video games that decided to host a competition to see who among its readership could draw up the best Tron Light Cycle. The entries were received and the results are… well, they’re pretty amazing.

Two winners were chosen, one from the United States and an International representative. John A. Frye took home the top spot among American artists with an appropriately American interpretation of a futuristic bike, while Raphael Laurent of Switzerland won the international prize. Each winner received a copy of the Art of Tron Legacy book and two Light Cycle toys.

We’ve assembled a gallery of the top eight submissions, but we think you should still go ahead and take a stroll through all of the submissions at SideQuesting.com. A variety of concepts are on display, and they range from jaw-dropping renders to beautiful hand-drawn sketches.

As we said before, it’s that time when everyone starts rolling out their year-end “Best of” lists and revisits their favorite rides of 2010. Top Gear is in on the action, naming its annual award winners. Its list, as you can see, is diverse and loaded with forbidden fruit (at least for those of us in the U.S.)

  • Hypercar of the Year: Koenigsegg Agera
  • Cabrio of the Year: Maserati GranCabrio
  • Grand Tourer of the Year: Bentley Continental GT
  • Hot Hatch of the Year: Volkswagen Golf R
  • Family Car of the Year: BMW 520d Touring
  • Engine of the Year: Fiat TwinAir
  • Coupe of the Year: Peugot RCZ
  • Luxury Car of the Year: Jaguar XJ
  • Small Car of the Year and Car of the Year: Citroen DS3

Besides the standard categories, the three hosts also picked their favorites of 2010. Jeremy Clarkson is in love with the Pagani Zonda R, James May goes with the Bugatti Veyron Supersport and Richard Hammond is quite fond of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Though we’ve given you the list, it’s still worth a trip over to the Top Gear website to read the reasons behind each choice.

2010 PickupTrucks.com Heavy-Duty Shootout: And the winners are…

2010 PickupTrucks.com Heavy-Duty Shootout

2010 PickupTrucks.com Heavy-Duty Shootout – Click above for high-res image gallery

When it comes to all things pickup truck-related, our pal Mike Levine from PickupTrucks.com has his finger on the pulse of what’s happening. Every year, Levine gathers all of the currently available contenders in a particular segment of the truck market for a shootout. With General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all having launched heavily reworked heavy-duty trucks in the last six months, that was the segment of choice for this year’s 2010 Heavy-Duty Shootout. Levine collected three examples each of the 3/4-ton gas, 3/4-ton diesel and one-ton diesel duallie pickups for a battle royale at Milan Dragway in Michigan and the General Motors Milford proving ground.

The trucks were put through their paces in acceleration and braking tests, both unloaded and hauling trailers of up to 12,000 pounds. The trucks ran on the level Milan drag strip and up seven- and 16-percent grades at Milford. Levine also evaluated ride and handling and the trucks were put through a fuel economy drive loop. The bottom line results for each category are available after the jump and you can – and should – read Levine’s definitive report over at PickupTrucks.com.
