Motorist gets pulled over by the same cop twice in two years. 12,000 miles apart.

Getting pulled over by the police for speeding is among the more unpleasant feelings a driver can experience. But while a ticket can most certainly ruin someone’s day, for some reason, most ticketed motorists feel compelled to tell everyone they know the backstory that led to the dastardly fine. The stories are rarely overly interesting, but every once in a while a real Pulitzer-eligible tale unfolds.

A New Zealand driver has just such a yarn to spin after he was pulled over twice in two years by the same cop. In two different countries. 12,000 miles apart. The Daily Mail reports that the unnamed driver was pulled over by officer Andy Flitton in the UK two years ago and again recently in New Zealand. The unlucky driver, who island-hopped to New Zealand after 12 years in the UK, recognized the ticket-giver as the same man who caught him breaking the law on the A5 near London. The officer had recently relocated south after 26 years on the force in England.

Even though the driver was out a good chunk of change for the two infractions, at least the driver can lay claim to the most interesting ticket officer Flitton has ever written.

Report: Chevy Camaro poised to outsell Ford Mustang for first time in 25 years

Filed under: Car Buying, Coupe, Performance, Chevrolet, Ford

Chevy Camaro - Ford Mustang split view

It’s been a quarter-century since the last time it happened, but Chevrolet’s reborn Camaro appears set to steal away the yearly pony car sales crown from the Ford Mustang.

According to AutoWeek, the Bowtie Brigade has cleared 75,685 Camaro sales through the end of November, while the Blue Oval has shifted 68,264 units. Extrapolating the monthly sales totals to the end of December, AW estimates that Chevrolet will finish 2010 with around 82,500 sales, besting the Ford’s estimate of 74,500. Trailing the muscle car pack in sales is Dodge’s Challenger lineup, trending at around 36,000 units.

There has certainly been pent-up demand for the Camaro among consumers after its prolonged absence, but what’s even more impressive about its yearly sales total is that if the lead holds, the Chevy will have outsold the Ford and the Dodge with far fewer special editions and no convertible bodystyle like the Mustang. (A droptop Camaro is slated to go on sale next year, and a high-performance Z28 variant is also expected).

Big Three Have Five Years of Prosperity Until Party Ends

Signs To Watch For As The Cycle Repeats

Ford trucks parking lot

Detroit’s automakers are starting to beat their chests in exultation, and who can blame them? The last 16 months have been nothing short of a miracle. Who would have believed they could recover so quickly?

Dial back the clock to last summer, June of 2009. Chrysler had just clawed its way out of bankruptcy, GM was still bankrupt. And Ford just barely avoided filing, saved only by borrowing heavily before the credit market collapsed.

The good times are just getting going. The next five years could be phenomenal.

If someone had come up to you then and said that in less than a year Ford would be earning over $7 billion and that it would surpass Toyota and Honda in quality, you would have said it was not going to happen.

If they had told you that General Motors would be earning over $6 billion in profits, you would have called them crazy.

If they had told you Chrysler would report an operating profit and come within a whisker of catching Honda in market share, you would have said they’re mad.

And if they had told you that Toyota would be battered by criticism for all its defects and quality problems, you would have said that’s impossible.

But here we are a year and a half later and the American auto industry has been completely transformed. The Big Three are more competitive than they’ve been in nearly four decades. Even more amazing, the good times are just getting going. The next five years could be phenomenal.

BMW says that after 25 years, one in four of the company’s vehicles is sold with xDrive all-wheel drive. The German carmaker currently sells a total of 45 models that put power to all four tires, and it says that figure may rise in the near future. In order to celebrate just how far the company’s all-wheel drive system has come over the past quarter decade, BMW has rolled out a quick stroll down memory lane. The first BMW to wear an X on its trunk debuted in 1985 and offered buyers a vehicle that was as capable when the road turned slippery as it was when the tarmac grew twisty.

Since then, BMW says that it has worked to give all of its all-wheel-drive vehicles the same rear-wheel bias as the rest of its products to maintain the now classic BMW driving feel. Hit the jump to see the full press release for yourself, and be sure to check out the gallery full of vintage BMW goodies.

Man hits 1M miles in Ford F-250… in four years

Million-mile Ford F-250Every now and again, we come across news that a vehicle has eclipsed the one million mile mark. The vehicles are typically very old, and they’re often pickup trucks. That’s only partly true for Phil Marsella, who uses his relatively new four year-old Ford F-250 to deliver greyhound dogs to racetracks and families across America. Marsella reportedly drives his gas F-250, “Betsy,” between 7,000 and 10,000 miles per week, or more miles than many drivers log in an entire year. And it appears as though Ford never expected the F-250 would surpass one million road miles, as the digital odometer stopped working once the milestone was reached. Marsella says that he’s tracking the miles, though, with another 12,000 miles or so since one million.

All those miles must make for a pretty big maintenance bill, as trucks typically need an oil change in fewer than 10,000 miles, and tires and brakes usually don’t last for more than 60,000 to 70,000 miles, though obviously with that much highway mileage, the binders should hold on a bit longer than that. That’s two or three oil changes a year and a brake or tire job every few years for most of us, but Maresella hits those milestones in no time flat. The career driver claims his four-year maintenance bill is a cool $67,000. If Marsella continues at this pace, and his beloved truck remains road-worthy, in the next six years he could challenge the all-time record of 2.8 million miles in a single vehicle; a record that required 40 years of driving.

Report: Morgan trike production resumes… after 60 years!

Filed under: Classics, Convertible, Performance, Motorcycle, Specialty

It may not be entirely rational, but we love ourselves the Morgan three-wheeler. After all, the old Morgan was the first vehicle Sir Stirling Moss ever drove on the street, easily making it the coolest thing on three wheels.

It seems we’re not the only ones traveling on the Crazy Train. A Harley-Davidson-powered replica called the Liberty Ace (shown above) has apparently been selling well enough that Morgan will restart production of the old trikes that were last produced back in 1952.

According to the Telegraph, even the old JA Prestwich air-cooled V-twin engine design will be resuscitated to sit between the two front wheels just as they did way back when. If Morgan is interested in any other options, may we suggest a call to Moto Guzzi might be in order?

Audi Quattro Concept live debut – Click above for high-res image gallery

Here they are folks, the first live images we’ve managed to snap of the Audi Quattro Concept that’s currently being debuted at the Paris Motor Show. We expect to get much more closely acquainted with the machine over the next couple of days, but until then, take a gander at the machine that Audi crafted to celebrate 30 years of Quattro performance.

Keep in mind that this sucker is packing 408 horsepower from its turbocharged five-cylinder engine and routing all those ponies through a six-speed manual gearbox to all four wheels, making for a power-to-weight ratio on par with that of the Audi R8 5.2 FSI. See the rest of the details here. A fitting tribute, if we do say so ourselves.

Report: GM’s Akerson says taxpayer payback will take years

Dan Akerson, General Motors CEO

New General Motors CEO Dan Akerson’s first bit of big news isn’t exactly good news: paying back the taxpayer for loans during GM’s dark days is going to take years. How many years remains uncertain, with Akerson saying the company’s performance will be the test, since repaying the government in a lump sum would be “unrealistic.” It helps that this news isn’t exactly unexpected, and if we can take anything from Akerson’s 15 days on the job, well, at least he’s honest.

Ford E-Series celebrates 50 years with a special edition

Ford Econoline

Ford celebrates 50 years of Econoline – Click above for high-res image gallery

Ford is celebrating the fact that its Econoline vans have been on the job for a full 50 years. The Blue Oval’s plucky little work horses hit the scene in 1961 with a total of three different body styles. Originally drafted for commercial duty only, Ford quickly realized that families love vans as much as plumbers, and began churning out consumer-oriented, family-friendly versions, as well. Since then, the Econoline (known in recent years simply as the E-Series) has gone on to become the best-selling full-size van in the United States for 31 years straight. Not too shabby.

By way of marking the occasion, Ford has decided to roll out a special-edition E-Series. Packed to the gills with the XLT package, the van will come dipped in a unique metallic blue paint and will wear seats embroidered with a new “Econoline 50 Years” logo. So far, there’s no word on how much that kind of kit will set you back, though we can’t imagine it being too much more than the $33,455 Ford asks for the E-150 XLT Premium. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Chevrolet Suburban celebrates 75 years, Autoblog drives every generation

Chevorlet Suburban 75th Anniversary

Chevrolet Suburban 75th Anniversary Event – Click above for high-res image gallery

Quick, what’s the longest-running nameplate in the car business?

If you said Honda Civic, you deserve to be smacked upside the head with a four-inch exhaust tip – it’s merely 37 model years old. The vehicle we’re talking about is positively prehistoric by comparison. The Porsche 911? Wrong again, as it only predates the Civic by a decade. You’re getting closer if you said the Ford F-Series, but still, FoMoCo didn’t launch its best-selling pickup until 1948.

You’ve got to go all the way back to 1935 for the launch of the auto industry’s Methuselah, the Chevrolet Suburban. That makes 2010 the 75th anniversary of the full-size SUV archetype. To celebrate, Chevy opened its vault on one of the Dog Days of August to let journalists drive a handful of vintage models.

It was something of a belated party, as GM stopped building 2010 model year Suburbans in June, including the special Diamond Edition model. But we’re not going to complain about being given the opportunity to get seat time in eight of the ten historic “Caryall” generations. Model years 1936, 1946, 1951, 1966, 1972, 1990, 1999 and 2002 were on hand, most thanks to GM’s Heritage Center.

We decided that the only proper way to approach the task was to drive back in history. This served well to highlight not just how much the Suburban has changed in recent model years, but how much the auto industry has evolved since the pre-war era. But it also showed how consistent the Suburban has been over all these years, offering eight-passenger capability in a roomy wagon body mounted on a heavy truck frame since its inception. History has shown this formula’s a winner; Chevy estimates it has built between 2.25-2.4 million Suburbans in total.

Follow the jump for a taste of our experience driving the Suburban back in time to its beginning.
