Auctions: eBay Find of the Day: 1960 Aston DB4GT Zagato replica with supercharged DB7 engine

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Auctions, Aston Martin, Luxury

Aston Martin Zagato replica with a eBay Buy It Now price of $2.4 million.

For all of the attention to detail that went into this beautiful, custom-built 1960 DB4GT Zagato, it almost seems a shame to call the Aston Martin a “replica.” But because it started out as a non-Zagato coupe (only twenty originals were built) and is now powered by a supercharged inline six sourced from a 1997 DB7, it must wear the term on its sleeve. What’s most astounding about this eBay find, however, isn’t the fact that it’s claimed to have been built from the ground up or that its original title might have been a duplicate, but the $2.4 million Buy It Now price.

The seller claims he has nearly 40 years of title and ownership history, including all receipts for the $1 million-plus Zagato build, and the big names involved in the project – such as renowned coachbuilder Clive Smart – along with extensive photo documentation go a long way to convince us of the build’s authenticity. Still, the seller claims that a discrepancy with the Vehicle Identification Number forced the builders to register the car with a new VIN plate, so, if you’re somehow in the market for this car, shop with discretion.

The seller’s statement about the car’s identification crisis is this: “We have learned that record keeping in those early days at Aston was not efficient and duplicate VIN plates were not unheard of. We believe this car to be the genuine article, but we know it is 100-percent Aston Martin.”

Feel free to check out the gallery we’ve included of the car, but be sure to visit the eBay page to pore over the extensive photo documentation we’re talking about – there’s something here for every type of car enthusiast, even if it’s just to gaze at the replica’s beautiful lines.

Official: Zagato unveils two Aston Martin Centennial editions

Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Aston Martin, Design/Style

Zagato Aston Martin Centennial concept - front three-quarter view

Zagato Aston Martin Centennial roadster concept - rear three-quarter viewCreating custom Aston Martin cars has become a specialty for Italian coachbuilder Zagato. It’s no surprise then that Zagato is getting in on the 100-year celebration of the British sports car maker with a pair of one-off models for two very dedicated – and presumably wealthy – automotive connoisseurs. Both rebodied Astons ditch the iconic designs of the DBS and DB9 in favor of a “more Mediterranean” appearance that adds a whole new level of sexiness to these cars, with squared-off edges and wider rear haunches.

The DBS Coupe Zagato Centennial is heading to an unnamed Japanese entrepreneur, while the DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial (based on the DB9 Volante) will wind up here in America in the possession of Aston Martin collector Peter Read. The wide, flat grille is somewhat recognizable as an Aston Martin, but it looks like the only visual parts carried over from the production cars to these Zagatos are the door handles. Scroll down for a brief press release covering both cars, which points out that the Coupe’s double-bubble roof pays homage to Zagato models from the19’50s.

Aston Martin V12 Zagato hits the racetrack for the first time

Filed under: Concept Cars, Motorsports, Coupe, Europe, Aston Martin, Racing

Aston Martin V12 Zagato

It’s the oldest journalism adage in the book. Dog bites man, not news. Man bites dog, now that’s news. So what does this have to do with cars? We’ll tell you.

Whereas most sports racers are converted for the purpose from existing, commercially available road cars, once in a while we see a car going the opposite way. Take the Lexus LFA, for example, which was first unveiled in concept form, then went racing at the Nürburgring, and only afterwards hit the market.

Now Aston Martin is following the same path with the V12 Zagato. The show car was first unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, and was fielded in the VLN race at the ‘Ring this weekend – while the Indy 500 and Monaco Grand Prix were under way elsewhere – before the final street version is released.

How the V12 Zagato actually performed hardly matters, as this initial outing was strictly for developmental purposes. But we’ll tell you anyway. It finished just five laps before it kicked the bucket. But that’s alright, because other works entries from Gaydon fared better (including a second-in-class finish for one of the factory’s V8 Vantages), and the Zagato racer will be back next month, in tandem, for a full-on assault. We’ll be watching.

Unfortunately Aston Martin has yet to release any high-res photos of the Zagato doing its thing, but we’ll keep an eye out and update you if and when it does. In the meantime you can follow the jump for the official factory release and check out the existing images in the gallery below.

Some concepts debut at an auto show and are never heard from again. Some make the rounds of minor local car shows. A small number make it into production. But it’s full speed ahead for the Aston Martin V12 Zagato.

The collaborative effort between Aston Martin and Zagato was unveiled at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the original DB4GT Zagato. A stunning creation, the show car handily won the award for concepts at the Italian lakeside concours. The next step? Racing.

Right from the start, Aston announced that the V12 Zagato would be hitting the race track in no less rigorous a test than Germany’s Nürburgring. And so it will, starting this weekend and returning in tandem next month for a second outing. But before it does, Aston’s released these images of the car.

The car that debuted in Villa d’Este ditched the diamond-finish wheels from the advance pictures for blacked-out ones, but it has kept the front splitter, full roll cage and sliding plastic driver’s-side window. The image above shows an even larger splitter, along with a giant rear wing. Otherwise, the racecar looks essentially the same as the coupe that won the Concorso D’Eleganza Design Award at Villa d’Este, but it’ll likely feature a full competition livery when it makes its race debut this weekend. Check out the updated image gallery and the award announcement after the jump.

Zagato’s “Alfa Romeo” TZ3 Stradale clears its V10 throat

Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale

Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale by Zagato – Click above to watch the video after the jump

When is an Alfa Romeo not an Alfa Romeo? When it’s a Dodge Viper ACR, of course. Okay, so the Zagato TZ3 Stradale may have nothing more tying it to Alfa than the badge on its nose and the name on which it draws, but that’s not about to stop us from loving it.

Details and initial photos of the coachbuilt custom just dropped the other day, revealing the latest in the iconic line of Zagato TZs. And while we were waiting for Zagato to release some additional photos of its newest creation, we got this video instead. Not that we’re complaining, because the ACR-based TZ3 Stradale is all kinds of awesome. But don’t take our word for it – follow the jump to watch the brief video for yourself.

Among the Fiat 500 concepts that Fiat took to Geneva, the most interesting was probably the Coupe Zagato, which got the design firm’s famous low, double-bubble roof and teardrop-shaped windows. According to Fiat brass, the 500 Coupe Zagato is go for production in Mexico and in very limited numbers in Europe.

No word yet on pricing, but it looks like the Fiat 500 Coupe Zagato will come with your choice of the standard 500’s engine options, including the brand-new 105-horsepower turbo two banger. Whether Fiat plans to bring the Zag here remains a mystery, but we aren’t getting our hopes up.

Zagato teases upcoming TZ4 with holiday greetings?

Filed under: Concept Cars, Classics, Alfa Romeo, Design/Style

Zagato holiday card

Close your eyes and picture the most beautiful contemporary sportscar designs. Were the Perana Z-One and Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione in the mix? Well, perhaps they ought to be. Now open your eyes and look at the image above.

What you’re looking at is a holiday card from the good folks at Zagato featuring the full Alfa Romeo TZ family. Starting from the back, there’s the original TZ1, followed by the classic TZ2, the most recent TZ3 Corsa unveiled at Villa d’Este and, what’s that wrapped in a bow, a fourth TZ model?

This is the first indication we’ve had of such a model in the works, but from what we can see in the image above, it looks promising, blending the aforementioned Z-One and 8C together into one tempting shape. Logic would dictate that the fourth model will carry the TZ4 nameplate. If it’s real, it’s likely to have been commissioned by some wealthy client, and probably borrows its underpinnings from the 8C Competizione. Whatever it is, color us intrigued, so watch this space for more details as they become available.
