Richard Hammond pretty much gets to live every car guy’s fantasy: get paid an exorbitant sum to sample, drive and comment on dream cars. Hammond maintains quite a collection of his own exotics, which until recently included a 2008 Morgan Aeromax that he waxed lyrical about on Top Gear.

Despite his purported love of BMW V8-powered Aeromax, he’s decided to sell it through Surrey, England’s Mole Valley Specialist Cars. Being that it has celebrity pedigree, precious few babied miles, and is one of only six right-hand-drive manual cars, the asking price is a heady £99,950, or about $159,000.

Feds find no evidence of faulty electronics in Toyota models

The ongoing saga of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles has taken another turn today as Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood released a statement indicating that no evidence of electronic problems in runaway Toyotas has been found.

“The jury is back. The verdict is in. There is no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas. Period.” said LaHood in a prepared statement. This finding comes at the end of a 10-month investigation carried out jointly by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and NASA that was requested by Congress.

Over 280,000 separate lines of code embedded in the electronics of potentially affected Toyota vehicles were examined by NASA, none of which contained any flaws capable of causing runaway acceleration, says the report.

This isn’t to say that the government has found that Toyota is not at fault in any way. LaHood added, “Our conclusion – that Toyota’s problems were mechanical, not electrical – come after one of the most exhaustive, thorough and intensive research efforts ever undertaken.”

Those mechanical problems, namely sticky accelerator pedals and pedals that got trapped under faulty floor mats, “remain the only known causes for these kind of unsafe unintended acceleration incidents,” says NHTSA. It should prove interesting to see how the courts – both of public opinion and of law – react to these findings.

James Lipton and guests work out the correct plural of Prius – Click above to watch video after the jump

Toyota is still working hard to find the plural for the word Prius. Joining in to lend a hand is James Lipton, host of Inside the Actor’s Studio. Lipton sits down with William Shakespeare, Randall the Octopus, MC Flossary, a group of cheerleaders and a spelling bee champion.

Each guest casts their vote for the correct plural of Prius and voting is still open on Toyota’s Prius Family site. Currently, Prii is leading strongly with 40 percent of the vote. Priuses sits in second with 27 percent while Prius, Prium and Prien bring up the rear. We still think a group of the hybrids should be called a smug of Prius, but that’s just us.

The winning word will be revealed on February 20th, 2011 but you still have time to cast your vote. Click past the jump to see what James Lipton and his guests think the correct choice should be.

eBay Find of the Day: 2000 Ford SVT Cobra R still in the wrapper

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Auctions, Ford

2000 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R

In the world of Hot Wheels collecting, there are two types of people: those who open and those who don’t. We tend to fall into the third, more populous category of those who demolition derby.

Clearly, we could never have demonstrated the kind of self-restraint it takes to purchase a brand-new 2000 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R and leave it in its original factory wrapping. Fortunately, there are people out there like the seller of this particular machine. According to the eBay Motors listing, there are a mere 11 miles on the odometer, and the plastic you see on the hood and fenders is the same garb that the mean Mustang wore off the production line.

Even the front splitter and brake cooling ducts are in their original bubble wrap in the trunk, and the interior is swaddled in plenty of FoMoCo plastic. That means that this pony is as close to a factory-new Cobra R that you could possibly buy today.

Ford famously minted a mere 300 examples of the Cobra R in 2000. The cars were bare bones, street-legal racers, and while the 5.4-liter V8 under the hood was supposed to churn out 385 ponies, owners typically found the engine to return those numbers at the wheels, not the crank. When launched, Motor Trend found the car capable of 0-60 mph runs in the 4.4 second range and a skid pad effort of over 1.0 g.

So, what’s it worth? Hard to say, but the auction has a Buy it Now price of $70,000, though the seller is also entertaining offers. Check out the auction here. Thanks for the tip, Brent!

eBay Find of the Day: Original Michael Keaton Batmobile

Tim Burton’s Batman Returns Batmobile – Click above for high-res image gallery

Time is running out if you want a shot at bringing home a slice of caped-crusader history. One of the three original Batmobiles from Tim Burton’s Batman Returns is officially up for auction, and the bidding wraps up in mere hours. According to the seller, this car was the best of the three used for filming, and comes with full documentation for the discerning collector. Power is served up by a Chevrolet 350 cubic-inch V8 with Hedman headers and an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold that bumps power north of 200 ponies.

Supervillains apparently moved at a more leisurely pace in the ’90s.

This particular Batmobile also comes with hydraulics for easy loading and unloading, which you’ll use because the auction also throws in a custom trailer for transportation. As of right now, the bidding has ratcheted up to $311,000 with the reserve price not yet met. The Buy It Now price is set at $499,000, and the vehicle is located in Clearwater, Florida.

The seller says that if no one reaches the reserve price before the eBay Motors auction comes to a close, the car will be auctioned on live television instead, which probably means it will appear in Scottsdale, Arizona for this weekend’s big Barrett-Jackson auction. Raid your couch cushions, save your pennies and head over to eBay Motors to get your bids a rollin’ before it’s too late.

Shelby Cobra barn find up for auction in Fort Lauderdale

1963 Shelby Cobra CSX 2080 barn-find

1963 Shelby Cobra CSX 2080 barn-find – Click above for image gallery

Some collectors wait years for something like this to turn up: a pristine, original 1963 Shelby Cobra. Chassis number CSX 2080 has been sitting untouched since 1981, and has had only two owners in its history. And now it’s going up for auction.

The headline consignment for the Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale event held by the newly rechristened Auctions America by RM, this Cobra could very well be the find of the new year. Its body and interior are in remarkable condition for a car this age, and the original factory powertrain recently underwent a complete overhaul – kind of a necessity for a car that’s been sitting still for nearly thirty years.

Pre-sale estimates place it around $425,000 (give or take a quarter-k), joined by such early consignments as a ’32 Duesenberg, a 1969 Shelby GT500 Fastback and a 2005 Ford GT. The event takes place at the Broward County Convention Center on March 3-5, but you can scope out the details in the press release after the jump, along with the photos in the gallery below, right now.

eBay Find of the Day: 1993 Chevy Caprice Wagon ‘Alter-Nomad’ is a headtripping mashup

Filed under: Classics, Wagon, Auctions, Chevrolet, Specialty

Chevrolet Alter Nomad

Chevrolet “Alter Nomad” Caprice – Click above for high-res image gallery

There are certain truths about Chevrolet wagons that we hold to be self-evident. Fourth generation long-roof Caprice models are all kinds of awesome, especially when packing the luscious Corvette-sourced 5.7-liter LT1 under the hood. Additionally, the ’57 Nomad is one of the most beautiful wagons to ever prowl the wide open spaces of our fine country. That doesn’t mean that we’re all for blending the two vehicles together, though. That didn’t stop one Thomas Taylor of California from penning the beastie you see above. Rolling under the “Alter Nomad” banner, the vehicle is a whole heap of almost awesome.

While the fin work out back does much to banish the bubble rear of the Caprice, tricks like the rocket hood spears and painted chrome insets make our stomachs churn. The saddest part of this tale is the fact that this particular machine rolls with the weaker 5.0-liter V8. Even with a remarkably low 81,116 miles on the odometer, the mill isn’t exactly on our list of world-class lumps. If this kind of kit is your bag of marbles, head over to eBay Motors for a closer look. While the auction has just ended, the bidding only got up to $6,500 with an unmet reserve, so we’re thinking if you want to make this trans-generational mashup yours, all you have to do is call the dealer, Discover Classic Cars in Arizona, and raid your piggy bank.

Online Find of the Day: 2000 Ferrari Enzo mule

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Etc., Ferrari

Ferrari Enzo mule – Click above for high-res image gallery

It’s not every day that a Ferrari mule comes up for sale, but that day, ladies and gentlemen, has arrived. What you see here may look like an old 348, maybe with some 355 components retrofitted. But what you’re actually looking at is one of the mules that gave rise to the all-conquering Enzo supercar.

The car may wear modified 348 bodywork – disguising evaluation testers with existing sheetmetal is common practice in Maranello – but like so many things, it’s what’s inside that counts. And in this case, it’s a 670-horsepower V12 derived from the Scuderia’s Formula One racing program, but adapted for roadcar use and mated to a six-speed paddle-shift transmission.

Enamored of the Enzo’s performance, but less so of its styling? This could be your once-in-a-lifetime chance. Think of it the same way as the 288 GTO was to the F40, only one-of-a-kind, and suddenly the Langenfeld, Germany dealer’s 750,000 Euro (a cool $1M at today’s rates) asking price doesn’t seem quite so extravagant, though it’s not much cheaper than a full-on factory Enzo. Have a closer look in the high-res image gallery below and then be sure to take a look at Modena Motorsport’s website. Thanks for the tip, Juan Pablo!
