Europe is a dangerous place to be a pedestrian. With crowded cities characterized by gridlock and narrow streets, you have to be on your game every second to avoid getting bowled over by a raging, overzealous motorist. All too often, that spells tragedy.

With one-sided car-on-human accidents on the rise, automakers are feeling increased pressure from their governments to make their cars safer, not just for the guy behind the wheel, but the guy they might hit.

Porsche is apparently working on a pop-up hood for the upcoming 911, which would raise up in the event of a collision with a pedestrian and, with any luck, reduce the severity of their injuries. The system works via a set of time delay-controlled actuators, which helps ensure that the system protects unfortunate passerby as effectively as possible.

New Lancia Stratos reportedly attracting potential buyers at $500k a pop

When Pininfarina and Michael Stoschek unveiled the new Lancia Stratos, they hinted that limited production was a possibility if there was enough demand. According to new reports, prospective buyers are already lining up at the door.

The latest rumors indicate that since unveiling the coachbuilt custom, around 40 customers in Europe and elsewhere approached Stoschek (the German enthusiast who commissioned the New Stratos in the first place) and Pininfarina, expressing their desire to buy one for themselves. The pair reportedly figure that, although it cost about €3 million (~$4m) to develop and build the first example, they could offer a quantity of the neo-retro supercar at around €400,000 ($540k) apiece, including €100,000 ($135k) for a (presumably used) Ferrari F430 and €300,000 to convert it into the New Stratos.

If you had around a half-million dollars lying around and an empty space in your garage, is this what you’d do with it? Check out the images in the gallery below and share your thoughts in the comments.

Land Rover is very happy to show off its new Evoque. In fact, the automaker just commissioned an artist to create wire-frame versions of the little luxury crossover. The pieces, of which there are four, have been placed as art installations throughout Paris. The whole concept is designed to highlight the model during its world debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

Four artists were chosen to create the pieces; André (a.k.a. “Monsieur A”), JCDC, Surface To Air and Yorgo Touplas. The unique units can be seen now through the end of September.

We’re big fans of wire-frame artwork because it presents a very unique perspective on an everyday object. It’s a smart way for Land Rover to get the Parisian locals and visitors talking about their newest model, especially since the city is currently filled with automotive journalists attending the Paris Motor Show and fashionistas in town for Paris Fashion Week.
