Muscles in Brussels: Land Rover launches Defender X-Tech edition in Belgium

The Belgians may not be known as much for military prowess as, say, for beer or waffles – at least not since conquering the Congo, anyway – but Brussels is also the seat of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO was established as a united front against the Communist bloc, and still stands as one of the most formidable alliances of nations this side of the Star Wars empire. A perfect place, then, to unveil a paramilitary-type vehicle like the X-Tech Limited Edition.

Easily as tough as any Hummer or Jeep, the X-Tech is based on the Land Rover Defender – one of the most rock-solid rock-crawlers ever devised. It’s available in either silver, three-door Defender 90 form or in five-door Defender 110 long wheelbase in olive green, both offset by black roof, wheel arches, interior and new “saw-tooth” alloys. Not a major upgrade on the standard model, but just enough to give it the attitude it deserves.

Unveiled at the Brussels Motorshow, the Defender X-Tech is unfortunately unavailable in the North American market, but you can dream by checking out the gallery below.

Classic Mashup: 2011 Range Rover vs. 1993 Range Rover

2011 Range Rover vs 1993 Range Rover

The shape may be very similar, but the technology underpinning a modern Range Rover is light years ahead of what you will find propping up an older model. Inside Line was able to line up two examples of the Range Rover; a 1993 model and the 2011 version. The two were then put through their paces at legendary Eastnor Castle, which sits at the border of England and Wales.

Eastnor is the site where many a Land Rover has been put through difficult off-road situations. Today, the castle serves as the headquarters for the Land Rover Driving Experience and is the perfect place to find out how old and new compare with one another.

Sure, coil springs have been replaced by an adjustable platform that literally rides on a cushion of air and the engine has changed from an old Buick to one sourced from Jaguar, but how do the two off-roaders stack up when the going gets really tough? Head over to Inside Line to read all about it.

Project Kahn, Cosworth squeeze 500 hp out of diesel Range Rover

Cosworth Range Rover

There’s a grand tradition to enormously powerful and torquey diesel sport-utes. Most of them come from the Volkswagen group – like the Touareg V10 or the Audi Q7 V12 TDI – but this, as you might have guessed, is no VW. It’s a Range Rover, uut one that’s been thoroughly worked over.

The modifications have been carried out through the joint efforts of Project Kahn and Cosworth – two British tuners that have been working together for the past couple of years. Their latest product started life as the thoroughly capable and luxurious Range Rover Sport with the 4.4-liter V8 diesel. With 313 horsepower, the diesel Rover is hardly a slouch, but Cosworth has taken it a step further (and then some) by squeezing out a whopping 500 horsepower.

To go with the massive upgrade in output, Kahn has given the Range Rover an extensive cosmetic update both inside and out, with new bumpers from and rear, side skirts, 22-inch wheels and an interior decked out in billet aluminum and perforated & quilted leather trim. Check it out in the high-res image gallery below.

Project Kahn working on Cosworth-powered Range Rover Evoque

Filed under: Aftermarket, Performance, SUV, Land Rover, UK, Luxury, Off-Road

It’s not every day that a new Range Rover is introduced. But when one is, you can count on Azfal Kahn and his crew to go to work on it. And the new Evoque appears to be no exception.

Beyond the photo above, all Project Kahn has released so far about its tuning program for the Evoque is that (a) it’s working on one, (b) it’s coming some time in the new year and (c) it’ll be powered by Cosworth. Kahn has worked with the racing engine manufacturer on previous projects, so that’s no big revelation by itself, but it’ll be interesting to see what the two British firms have got in store for the new baby Rover beyond a set of flashy rims.

Land Rover LR4 Landmark edition discovers its darker side

Land Rover Disco 4 Landmark

While Land Rover made a splash in Los Angeles with the new five-door Evoque, back in its native UK, the company was casting a white light and a dark shadow over the go-anywhere Discovery 4/LR4.

Presented as the new Landmark edition, the special Disco can be ordered in either Santorini Black or Fuji White with coordinating interior in either ebony or ivory – the latter being offered for the first time in a Discovery. To complement the stark exterior color, Land Rover has also given the grille, roof rails and 20″ alloys a darker finish and fitted it with tinted glass.

The Discovery 4 Landmark is powered by a twin-turbo diesel V6, and comes packed with all the features you’d expect from a Land Rover, plus a little touch of the exclusive. Details in the press release after the jump and photos in the gallery below.

LA 2010: 2012 Range Rover Evoque sprouts a set of rear doors

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Five-Door

We first met the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque at this year’s Paris Motor Show, and its five-door sister makes its official debut today at the LA Auto Show. The Evoque is a huge departure from what we’ve commonly known of things that wear the Range Rover name, and it’s poised to be a real hit amongst the urban, luxury lifestyle set. Power comes from a range of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, and all-wheel drive is standard – it is a Land Rover, after all.

Both the three- and five-door Evoques go on sale in the summer of next year, and Land Rover states that pricing will start around $45,000. See the new five-door Evoque for yourself in the high-res image gallery below and/or peep the mega-sized press release from Land Rover after the jump.

WSJ: Jaguar Land Rover pursuing Chinese joint venture

Filed under: China, Jaguar, Land Rover, Earnings/Financials

Jaguar Land RoverJaguar Land Rover looks to be jumping into the Chinese market in a big way. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company has fired up talks with an automaker in The People’s Republic in hopes of giving birth to a joint venture. For now, neither Jaguar Land Rover nor owner Tata are willing to expound on who the mystery partner could be. Instead, the two are content to simply say that the move is part of a strategy to push Jaguar and Land Rover products in under-developed markets.

The Wall Street Journal
reports that Land Rover may be interested in manufacturing SUVs in China at first. Later, Jaguar products may eventually show up, as well. For now, it’s unclear exactly what Jaguar Land Rover would bring to the partnership other than stacks of hard cash and brand equity, though that may be incentive enough for a mystery Chinese automaker.

Video: Land Rover revisits claymation for new Freelander/LR2 ad campaign

Land Rover LR2 Clay Mason ad

Claymation ad for the 2011 Land Rover Freeland 2/LR2 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Land Rover is getting ready to roll out a new ad campaign in support of the 2011 Freelander 2, a vehicle we know here as the LR2. You might expect Land Rover to go the traditional route of glamorous clean shots of the car mixed with a flurry of scenes highlighting its off-road capability. That’s not the case here, as it has decided to go in another direction… a rather squishy one at that.

Land Rover is harnessing the advertising power of claymation to promote the new LR2. The “star” of the commercial, besides the little luxury utility vehicle, is a character by the name of Clay Mason. The Mason character discusses his past claymation acting history, his tough work schedule on this shoot and what it was like to drive the 2011 LR2. It’s actually a little on the creepy side…

The spot took five weeks to shoot and then another four weeks were required for editing and production. There’s an astonishing two-tons of modeling clay on display, and the team built a fully operational scale LR2 model for the shoot. It will air in the United Kingdom starting January 2011. The clip, along with a making-of video, is available for your viewing pleasure after the jump.

Range Rover Evoque art installations pop up across Paris

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque art

Range Rover Evoque Art Installations – Click above for high-res image gallery

Land Rover is very happy to show off its new Evoque. In fact, the automaker just commissioned an artist to create wire-frame versions of the little luxury crossover. The pieces, of which there are four, have been placed as art installations throughout Paris. The whole concept is designed to highlight the model during its world debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

Four artists were chosen to create the pieces; André (a.k.a. “Monsieur A”), JCDC, Surface To Air and Yorgo Touplas. The unique units can be seen now through the end of September.

We’re big fans of wire-frame artwork because it presents a very unique perspective on an everyday object. It’s a smart way for Land Rover to get the Parisian locals and visitors talking about their newest model, especially since the city is currently filled with automotive journalists attending the Paris Motor Show and fashionistas in town for Paris Fashion Week.

Paris Preview: Five-door Range Rover Evoque caught prepping for show [w/video]

Filed under: Spy Photos, Paris Motor Show, Crossover, Land Rover, Luxury

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque five-door

When Land Rover officially revealed the Range Rover Evoque they didn’t include a single shot of the five-door baby crossover utility. Thankfully, someone with early access to the upcoming Paris Motor Show floor decided that was some kind of crime, and so they took shots of the more family-minded Evoque occupying the Land Rover stand. The secret snapper also got images of the cabin, and we think it’s beautiful distillation of the Range Rover Sport’s interior language. We can’t wait to see it ourselves next week.

For now, have a look at the link below for more shots of the Evoque five-door, and be sure to hit the jump for a video of the two-door.
