Auctions: 1973 Lancia Stratos makes for a super cool barn find

1972 Lancia Stratos barn find front three-quarters

Like a scene out of Forza Horizon, finding something like an ultra-rare 1972 Lancia Stratos is a dream. The Ferrari-engined, Bertone-bodied rally car is one of the automotive highlights of the 1970s, winning the World Rally Championship three straight times (1974, 1975 and 1976). And while there were some 492 road cars produced, none were formally exported to the United States. Which makes the appearance of this red, Stradale variant quite a find.

It’s up for auction at Bonhams, which has a thorough rundown of this particular model. As we said, it’s a Stradale (Italian for “street”), designed to fulfill FIA homologation requirements. It uses a detuned variant of the Stratos rally car’s 2.4-liter Ferrari V6, with 192 horsepower routed through a five-speed manual transmission. The curb weight sits under 2,200 pounds, which Bonhams estimates will help with the car’s claimed 0-60 time of around five seconds.

This car was originally sold in Germany, before being imported to the US late in 1982 by a British national. He took delivery in Albuquerque, and proceeded to drive from there to his home in San Francisco. It was then regularly used for commuting, which must have been a quite a sight. The Stratos was put into storage in 1998 with just over 31,000 miles on the clock, and hasn’t been moved since.

Not surprisingly, the auction house gave this Lancia a thorough examination, and found a body that is in “very sound condition,” while the car’s mechanicals appear complete. It even has the California stamp that signifies it’s been federalized.

Bonhams is strongly recommending that this Lancia’s new owner give the car a complete, ground-up rebuild. And if you were hoping that might lower the price a bit, you’d be wrong – Bonhams is predicting this particular car will sell at auction for $250,000 to $300,000. It’s lot number 189, and will cross the block on August 16, at Pebble Beach. We’ve no doubt it will find a buyer.

New Stratos takes to the track, teaches history lesson

New Lancia Stratos becomes a part of history – Click above to watch the video

The new Ferrari F430 Scuderia-based Lancia Stratos has been the darling of the interwebs since it was first teased in 2009. Over the last two years, it’s made it from a simple sketch to a very real, very fast, very rare tribute to a true motorsports legend.

To give the car the introduction it deserves, its builders have combined footage of the original Stratos tearing its way through Europe’s rally passes with film of the new car doing its thing on a modern race track. The effect is a hoontastic history lesson and tribute to both cars.

Unfortunately for us, the video is entirely in German, but the footage is cool enough to bridge any language barrier. The full 13-minute video resides after the jump. Continue reading.

New Lancia Stratos reportedly attracting potential buyers at $500k a pop

When Pininfarina and Michael Stoschek unveiled the new Lancia Stratos, they hinted that limited production was a possibility if there was enough demand. According to new reports, prospective buyers are already lining up at the door.

The latest rumors indicate that since unveiling the coachbuilt custom, around 40 customers in Europe and elsewhere approached Stoschek (the German enthusiast who commissioned the New Stratos in the first place) and Pininfarina, expressing their desire to buy one for themselves. The pair reportedly figure that, although it cost about €3 million (~$4m) to develop and build the first example, they could offer a quantity of the neo-retro supercar at around €400,000 ($540k) apiece, including €100,000 ($135k) for a (presumably used) Ferrari F430 and €300,000 to convert it into the New Stratos.

If you had around a half-million dollars lying around and an empty space in your garage, is this what you’d do with it? Check out the images in the gallery below and share your thoughts in the comments.

New Stratos unveiled in retro Alitalia rally livery [w/video]

New Stratos in Alitalia livery – Click above to view in slightly higher resolution

The New Stratos has been drumming up a world of enthusiasm. And with good reason: the original was one of the most iconic rally machines ever devised, and the modern tribute looks to be living up to the legend in the grandest of style. That hasn’t stopped some from saying the design doesn’t look enough like the original, but that could very well come down to the paint scheme.

No, what we really need is to see it in the same livery displayed on the original in its heyday. Fortunately that’s just what they brought out (as a mock-up from the looks of things) at the car’s debut at Paul Ricard HTTT in the South of France. Want to see more from the unveiling? Follow the jump and feast your eyes on the video footage there to be viewed.

Beauty and a Beast: New Lancia Stratos runs 0-62 in 3.3 seconds

In a perfect world, the fastest cars would be the best looking ones. And to some extent, that’s often the case. But not always. For instance the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is one of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous automotive creations ever devised, but by most accounts, its performance fails to live up to its styling. Conversely, cars like the Nissan GT-R and Porsche 911 GT2 RS are some of the most devastatingly fast vehicles ever to grace tarmac, but not everyone’s enamored of their sheetmetal.

The New Stratos is here to suggest that you may be able to have your cake and eat it to, as full technical specifications and performance stats have been released on the one-off retro creation. The aluminum chassis from the Ferrari 430 Scuderia is a good starting point, giving the New Stratos a compact, lightweight frame, a 44/56 front/rear weight distribution ratio and a 4.3-liter V8 tuned from the 508 horsepower delivered in the Scud to 540 in the nuovo Lancia.

That’s enough to rocket the coachbuilt custom from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.3 seconds, past 200 km/h (124 mph) in 9.7 and on to a top speed of 170 mph. (That last figure may not be the most impressive, but the original Stratos was never geared for top-speed runs, but for rapid acceleration and nimble handling, and its successor appears to have followed the same route.)

Not ready to cry “uncle” just yet? The full specifications – from gearbox to dimensions – can be found after the jump, so click on to feast your eyes.

EVO drives the new Lancia Stratos

Pininfarina Lancia Stratos

It’s a shame the Pininfarina Stratos probably won’t see widespread production. The car is hewn straight from the naughtiest of our automotive dreams, and with some of its aluminum bones borrowed from the Ferrari 430 Scuderia it promises to be as fun to fling as anything with four wheels. The crew at EVO was lucky enough to weasel their way behind the wheel of the lovely one-off, becoming the first journalists to do so in the process. That sound? It’s the noise our boundless jealousy makes when agitated.

EVO was able to take the car out for a couple of hot laps around Circuit Paul Ricard, and the verdict is that, as you might expect, the car is plenty nimble and just as quick. There is some indication that the vehicle’s short wheelbase would likely make for some hair-raising antics at higher speeds, though. EVO even goes so far as to say that the vehicle has a completely different personality compared to its Prancing Horse donor. Even better, there may be a very small production run in the vehicle’s future.

Luca di Montezemolo puts the new Stratos through its paces – Click above to watch video after the jump

Don’t let anyone tell you that Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo can’t drive. The boss of one of the world’s most exclusive supercar brands recently took the time to hot-shoe the resurrected Stratos around the Fiorano race track in Italy. While watching a brand executive put a car through its paces is rare enough, it’s even more surprising to hear di Montezemolo heap praise on a vehicle without a Prancing Horse on the hood, even if there’s a 4.3-liter Ferrari V8 at the heart of the new car.

Throw in the fact that the new interpretation of one of Italy’s most iconic rally heathens looks and sounds the part, and you’ve got all the makings of juicy video clip.

Have we mentioned just how badly we want one of these? Hit the jump to watch the video for yourself.

Video: Reborn Lancia Stratos teased during testing

Lancia Stratos testing teaser – Click above to watch the video after the jump

We’ll admit it: The New Lancia Stratos project gets us all hot and bothered. This special Ferrari F430-based one-off will make its official debut sometime next month, and the pre-reveal teasers are continuing to pour in.

This time around, we see the Stratos revival team working with former Formula 1 driver Tiago Monteiro to fine-tune the chassis out on Italy’s Balocco test track. The Stratos’ body is constructed out of carbon fiber and with its slim-and-trim curb weight and 50:50 weight distribution, we have no doubts that it will be an absolute hoot out on the track.

See the latest teaser video for yourself, after the jump, and stay tuned for the full Stratos details next month.

Like The Six Million Dollar Man going through his paces for Dr. Wells, the Lancia Stratos was recently thrown around the track for its patron, Michael Stoschek and his son Maximilian. The commentary and interviews are in German, but that’s beside the point; the language spoken by the Stratos is 483-horsepower mid-engined Ferrari – a dialect anyone with a pulse can understand.

We’ve already seen the new Lancia Stratos from various angles, just never enough of them at one go. Finally, we’ve got a complete picture of the retro racer made new. Knowing there’s a 483-horsepower engine from a Ferrari F430 underneath all that carbon fiber bodywork, and a shortened chassis, the remaining mysteries concern the interior and how the Stratos performs.

So now that we’ve come to the bittersweet end of the striptease, someone cue up the video and let’s see her shimmy. In the meantime, have a fuller gander at the Lancia Stratos in the gallery of high-res photos below.
