Ode to Salt – Click above to watch video after the jump

Josh Clayson visited Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats and walked away smitten. Not only that, he walked away with some stunning high-definition footage of machines encrusted in and racing over the sodium chloride expanse. Set to a little music and some subtle editing, it’s as poetic as the Pablo Neruda poem that accompanies it. You’ll find it after the jump.

Vintage diesel Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon drifting – Click above to watch the video after the jump

This might be one of the coolest things we’ve ever seen… this year. There are hundreds of videos floating around the ‘net of people drifting their hotted-up Nissan Zs, Ford Mustangs or Big Wheels around race tracks, public roads and abandoned airports, but this driver earns some extra bonus points for pulling it off in a vintage Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Diesel. Wagon.

As if you needed more reason to click through the jump and watch the video in its nearly seven-minute entirety, know that this driver not only has good taste in drift cars, but he has some serious skills to boot. Now, if we could only see this video remade starring the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon… Hat tip to Anders!

Video: Who’s got a 300-horsepower Ford Festiva Shogun? Jay Leno, who else?

Jay Leno’s 300-horsepower Ford Festiva – Click above to watch video after the jump

Ford is hosting a round-the-world trip in its new Fiesta, and somehow that led Motor Trend to visit Jay Leno’s Garage and have a look at his ’80s-era Ford Festiva Shogun. There’s no way a bog-standard 63-horsepower runabout could last longer than a fruit fly in Jay’s garage, so this one does its best impression of a Renault 5 Turbo down to the engine in the rear and the blistered arches and vents.

For those who don’t know what a Shogun is exactly, it’s the perfect marriage of a Taurus SHO’s original 3.0-liter Yamaha V6 and a Ford Festiva. You take the motor and drivetrain from the Taurus SHO and place it front-to-back in the Festiva, then season to taste with wheels and body kit. Leno’s Shogun is also boosted by nitrous oxide for a total of about 300 horsepower, which is pretty good for a Korean-built subcompact from 1989.

Leno cites two compelling reasons for the Shogun: “Because there are certain parts of the world where people are going to chase you,” and “I live in a hilly area.” Of course, Jay, of course. Follow the jump for the Shogun’s story.

Video: Trans-Am race cars battle it out at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion

1969 Ford Boss 302 Team Shelby Trans-Am Mustang – Click above to watch the video after the jump

One of our favorite events from the Monterey car week earlier this month was watching the field of 44 Trans-Am race cars tear it up at the Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The sights and sounds of classic Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers battling it out on the track just like they did in the late ’60s and early ’70s was something we’ll never forget.

The eventual winner of that race was a 1969 Boss 302 Mustang (which is now up for sale) owned and driven by Laguna Seca veteran Bruce Canepa, who has put up a video of his victory. The video shows that the win wasn’t easy, as he traded places with a 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A and a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 multiple times. You can watch the entire race in the embedded video after the jump, and be sure to turn up your speakers.

Behind Cadillac’s “The Competition” commercial for the CTS-V – Click above to watch video after the jump

Once upon a time – May 9, 2008 to be precise – the Cadillac CTS-V ran the ‘Ring in 7:59.32, and just five days later we had video proof of the event. Now that over two years have passed, the feat will leave the geek-o-riffic world of ‘Ring time watchers and be shared with the rest of America in a commercial called The Competition.

What that commercial will say or how it will be used to promote this particular bit of rather old and arcane news is to be determined, but we do know what’s behind the scenes. If you want to find out, you’ll hop on after the jump and check out the three-minute vid with director Jeff Zwart. Yes, that Jeff Zwart…

Video: KTM teases new 125cc heathen

KTM 125cc teaser – Click above to watch video after the jump

The poor little 125cc bikes of the universe rarely get the love of their larger-displacement siblings. Typically banished to the rider education programs of the world, the one-and-a-quarters are quickly forgotten in favor of bikes with more serious muscle. But 125’s have their advantages. For one thing, they’re typically a fraction of the cost of larger bikes, and since that tiny engine weighs next to nothing, they’re also incredibly flingable contraptions. So when KTM showed off a pair of four-stroke 125cc concepts at last year’s EICMA show in Milan, our curiosity was sufficiently piqued.

Now KTM has dropped a teaser video showing development of the production model. The Austrian manufacturer hasn’t said word one about whether the bike will be available on American shores once it drops, though we’ve got our fingers crossed. The wrench-spinning montage of bike-building awesomeness after the jump has only made us nervously eye our checking account in anticipation. We could think of plenty worse ways to get to and from the office than a fuel-sipping moto with plenty of spunk to boot. Hit the jump to have a look for yourself.

Jay Leno takes a look at the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca – Click above to watch video after the jump

Sure, Jay Leno has some pretty varied taste when it comes to cars, but the apple of his eye is likely his ’66 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350. He’s owned the car for the better part of a quarter of a century, and it routinely comes up when he speaks about the essence of a good-driving car. It’s fitting, then, that Leno was on hand for the debut of the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca Edition. With 440 horsepower from a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8, track-oriented aerodynamics and a lively 3.73 rear axle ratio, this sucker is designed for some serious flogging.

Leno managed to corner Tom Barnes, the vehicle engineering manager for Mustang, trackside for a quick rundown of what the new Boss and the Laguna Seca edition are all about during the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage.

Now, the really interesting part of this whole video is when Leno lets it slip that the Boss will feature a unique tech-laden key. Barnes wasn’t willing to elaborate on the details, saying that more information would be released at a later date. Hit the jump to see the full video for yourself.

Video: Nissan unveils four new Innovation For All spots

2011 Nissan Quest in new ad campaign – Click above to watch video after the jump

We do love our car commercials. Oftentimes, marketing departments and ad agencies simply have a way of distilling everything we love about cars, trucks, SUVs and yes, even CUVs into easily-digestible snippets of video. Nissan has just rolled out a new collection of four ads under the Innovation for All banner, each focusing on the company’s commitment to new ideas, designs and products.

If you look closely, you may even spy the next-generation Nissan Quest lurking among the quick cuts in the first ad. Judging from what we’ve seen, it looks like the company’s minivan will be awfully similar to the Japanese-market Elgrand that Nissan debuted not so long ago.

In addition to the tech-centric commercial, Nissan is touting the fact that its vehicles have had brake override systems since 2004, ribbing rival Toyota and underscoring the company’s commitment to safety at the same time. As you may recall, legislators have called for brake-override protection to be mandatory on all new cars in the wake of the Toyota unintended acceleration fiasco. Hit the jump to take a look at the spots for yourself.

Ohio highway crash

100-mph highway crash – Click above to watch the video after the jump

We can’t help but hold our breath whenever we see video of cars being wrecked at speed. Take this incident, for example, in which Brennan Eden, age 19, slams his Pontiac Firebird into the concrete pillar of an overpass while doing over 100 miles per hour. Oh, and this was after he slid into the median and sent the car airborne and sideways. You’d never think it from watching the video, but Eden managed to survive the crash after being ejected from the car and no other motorists were injured – what a relief.

The accident took place on Interstate 675 in Beavercreek, Ohio and was amazingly captured via a dash-mounted video camera inside a local police cruiser that Eden just happened to pass at the right time. This kid should go buy a lottery ticket after thanking his lucky stars for this one. See the full crash footage for yourself after the jump. Thanks for the inbox full of tips on this one, people!

2011 Ford Fiesta gets IIHS Top Safety Pick – Click above to watch video after the jump

We have mountains of respect for the men and women who work at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. After being invited to the institute’s Charlottesville, Virginia facility for a front-row seat to the 2011 Ford Fiesta’s frontal-offset test, we can honestly say that if we had their job, we’d have a hard time getting into just any old car ever again. While the Blue Oval’s new sub-compact passed its battery of evaluations with flying colors (being the first and only minicar to earn a Top Safety Pick nod since the institute added a rollover test), we were also treated to a tour of some of the more poorly engineered models from the recent past.

Manufacturers have made an impressive amount progress on the safety front in the last decade, thanks largely to a close partnership with the IIHS. The institute has worked to revise crash tests to more accurately reflect the composition of vehicles on the road. One of its primary functions is to identify crashes where people die in otherwise well-rated vehicles and to adjust crash tests accordingly. While the public identifies the institute with bouncing perfectly good cars off of chunks of aluminum and concrete, the truth is that crash testing is only a small part of the IIHS mission. Of course, it’s also the most fun part. Follow the jump to take a look at a video of the Fiesta’s frontal-offset test.
